Adjust loot/prestige value
-
90% of current quest loot aside from consumables is being farmed for prestige, I'd suggest tweaking some of the quest loot to make it more useful to players while at the same time removing the prestige value from a lot of things. At the moment prestige is shockingly easy to get ahold of.
-
@ethika They added prestige values to a lot of items becasue they had no value to a lot of players otherwise, so not sure on removing prestige values. Tweaking maybe
-
@onlylobo Yeah it would be ideal if instead of adding prestige values, they'd be something they players could make use of. rather than leave on the floor or discard into the chest for some paltry points.
-
Disagree.
The loot always has a use to someone, but if a group finds a greataxe and no one can use it, and it either can't be sold or is worth 15gp, then at least it can be traded for Pres points, rather than left for the resets to clean up.
A lot of loot only has use to a point, and often only for certain classes or play styles.

Pres Points is a good trading system that isn't perfect but at least works in it's intended role.
-
@burgesse I agree with keeping it as is
-
So there's a couple of things to understand about the prestige system.
-
Giving quest items prestige is one of the main ways combating the "Give the item value so people don't just leave it on the ground" thing.
-
There are prestige only shops at a lot of places where you can only buy items with prestige points. There are even more unique and specialized faction prestige shops, which is how you buy and earn faction gear.
-
Off loading prestige into your favorite place or place you are associated with has different effects in game. For example, the Palace gets a lot of prestige points donated to it, so there is a potion vendor in the Historic district selling potions at discounted prices.

This reads to me less like a condemnation of the prestige system and more like the now years old complaint that almost all the loot on this server is just garbage destined for a bin that nobody wants to hang onto. At least prestige gives you something in return for binning it, so I can't imagine it would be a good idea to mess with it too much.
If the loot was worth hauling around and trying to sell or give out to PCs people would probably just do that instead of redeeming them for a frankly miniscule amount of prestige.
-
First point is that prestige system is largely for the DM factions, which I agree with. This should perhaps be explained better by DMs, but also rewarded. Most chaotic alignments don't really have a natural faction, except Wild Walkers, the rest are all kind of lawful.
The prestige system should be changed, to help people understand what the factions are. It should be made more prominent. The non-member prestige shops should indicate the factions you are meant to join, put them all in the Faceless Inn and offer light "associate-level" loot that can't be edited, perhaps some limited buffs as well.
For example, if I roll an evil fighter and don't know where Tilverton is. I see a bunch of low-end evil fighter loot in Tilverton shop, I will dump all my possessions there and then get some "Tilverton Associate" level armour, or maybe a shield with a raven on it, and I know that I should be joining them or talking to their PCs. The armour should also be sufficient evidence for me to make it into the Ravens if I apply.
-
@joekickass The Ravens are Chaotic. All of the factions have a write up page describing what alignments fit best with them, and you can find the faction gear posted on the forums.
Even for a PC not in a DM faction, the use of prestige can be used to get consumables like barkskin, shield, and blur pots. Otherwise use it to trade with DM faction players for something else you do need.

Like faction bases. Or favors. If a NON faction pc allows me to grab the prestige when we quest, I shower them with love. It means I can get my faction loot.

Ravens are Chaotic? I thought they were LE.
You can get bark from prestige stores if not in a faction?
-
@joekickass In bundles of 10, no less.
Farming prestige has a lot of good uses, though some of the fancier stuff is prohibitively expensive for a more casual player to obtain.
A lot of the loot in those general theme stores are pretty worthless to most PC's, so most I know tend to just end up getting the potions out of them.
It would maybe be nice to see some more targeted loot in these stores, targeting concepts that aren't very well supported on CoA. (Spellblade loot immediately comes to mind, for totally unselfish reasons.)

While I totally get this - the reason ALL the prestige shops are literally the same as each other, and don't offer loot specific to each faction - is because the factions compete using prestige for various server alterations (guards in districts changing, potion shops getting discounts, and many other things we plan to implement)
So, if one of the stores has the "best loot" then that faction will get ahead not due to people favouring that faction, but because the loot is good.
I do really like the idea though, and something could probably be done regarding it.
CAVEAT - this is just me discussing something and does not imply anything is being done regarding this by the admin/build team. No promises are implied herein, without, or otherwise. Always read the label.

I like that system, but the problem is, people will just dump prestige items in the nearest prestige bin. So Council of Twelve just rack up an insane amount of prestige because it is accessible.
-
@zool
The problem exists in the fact that it isnt working right now, even if what you state was the intention. The Council get far more prestige points than they rightly should, simply because it is located where it is. Any other faction is, I bet, 99% faction members earning points to buy their faction loot. The cool idea would be to perhaps make actual thematic loot, that non faction members could buy.
- Put in a paladin prestige store in Eveningstar, because it makes sense, that we would want to promote goodness, especially compared to the other factions.
- Make Precepts have sorc and Mossmere (the shop exists already) to offer wizard stuff
- Make Wild Walkers have Barbarian and Ranger loot. (the druids get automatic access to their own shop, so no point adding that here).
- Make Ravens have the cool, awesome, but SHADY rogue gear, and gear with evil undertones.
- Have Summerstar offer less shady, but perhaps simply good alignment loot.
That way, you nudge people towards giving points to the factions that "make sense" for them to earn prestige from.
And I will be happy to create a shit ton of loot ideas for each store, if it is more than a wasted effort.

Stores are being looked at. This takes a lot of time and effort so be patient. Also, until recently it was the Greywatch who consistently led the prestige board total. Currently it is the Precept. Tilverton and Eveningstar have their own thing. We’ve also had player sell prestige items.

Some people also donate to the Palace because they want to support the city as well! If all the shops are the same, then people can donate to the faction they want to encourage. As for the palace being the closest, isn't that just the benefit for being in charge of Arabel?
But more thematic stuff to make the shops a bit different would be neat. It would make sense for the wildwalkers to have druid stuff, the house of morning with paladin, etc.

I stand corrected Sir. And the stores taking time is fine. You know that far better than I.
