What would modivate me!

There is a large difference between changing the game world and leaving a mark on it. The former should be extremely difficult, but the latter should be much easier in my eyes.
I like this.
I like moving through the server and having a "Kilroy was here" moment.
Sensei was here.

Have one of those kilroy moments with artio, literally,in the pit :-)

@Darlene:
I have seen it happen a few times in the past, three things usually have to happen based on my observations,
1 the said player becomes a DM.
Actually, that should not happen. When we become DMs, our old characters are to disappear, not become NPCs. The few DMs who did this, either didn't know the rule and removed them later.
-
that would explain why some of them were around , then were no where to be seen later on
-
There is a whole quest which is full of player characters deeds
I'd like to address this specifically as an example of what I am talking about.
I actually think this quest is very neat and flavorful when its not killing me horribly (I actually like that it's dangerous to be honest.) But the last person to be put in it was Krageus Thune, a character that as I understand it pushed the player to the very brink while playing him, and a character that comes around only once every few years under the perfect circumstances. And for his trouble, he has a shield in a 1-5 quest. I was under the impression that the city, on a very IC level were very supportive of their heroes and what they sacrifice, and it seems silly that you have to put yourself on the level of Krageus Thune in order to leave a physical mark as small as this.
This is what I mean by lowering the bar. It shouldn't go to every joe blow who walks into the city, but really? The bare minimum to be recognized with a small token in a 1-5 quest is to put your character on the same level as Thune? That's ridiculous, you have to see that. It's really silly. I understand that it takes time away from the DMs who want to be running events and doing active cool stuff with the players, but I do think taking a moment to set noteworthy characters aside and give them a little something is something that will HUGELY affect the server population, and help new players understand the more recent histories associated with CoA.
But I'm repeating myself, so that'll probably be my last word on this whole deal.
-
I had a character in Tyche's challenge but it was removed when certain people found out i had played him. Was fun while it lasted though. But otherwise i agree with Hellz.

Make me a DM and I promise that I will spend copious amounts of time building monuments to my past characters. Aaaaaaaaaaaand anyone that grovels sufficiently would also be thrown a bone in this regard… Perhaps a cracked copper with your characters initials scrawled in it or something...
Alright, I'm kidding. But seriously - Something left behind. Leaving our mark. Kilroy was here. We all want it. On CoA it -is- possible, just incredibly unlikely. Let's make it more likely eh?
I want to see Danu's Relentless Bow, or a bag of holding woven from the beard hair of Wilhelm the gnomish Mage, or Tom Thorn's leather britches of seduction. (Gratuitous self promotion here)

Thune also left the mark of the Penal Legion, which is still used today, a decade after the fall of the primordial. Perhaps it should be called 'Thunes Legion' instead though.
Generally we want this stuff to happen. Pale Sands for example, were so close to leaving a pretty massive mark on the server actually, but just failed at the very last hurdle. Unsure how we could leave much behind after what happened, so sometimes it's an IC thing as well.
-
"It might not be that people go into CoA thinking they have to change it so much as the people who want to play a game where they can change the world, play CoA."
This is very true. The slim chance that a character one creates may actually leave a mark on the server (whether physically IG or in the mind of fellow players) is a big part of why many play on the server. That said it can sometimes feel like your chasing a rainbow…
-
I'm pretty satisfied with being mentioned in the library by a NPC writer. I'm not saying that an IG mark wouldn't be a hundred times cooler, but it's still pretty cool to be part of history.

we used to have rewards for good roleplay, but it turned into a poor popularity contest.
perhaps something similar can be implemented again, with three votes to be nominated and then the DMs choosing the winner of the reward.
now last time we had people doing outrageous things to get nominated, which they wouldn't do normally. to take this out of the equation, is one single event or situation is not a qualification. consistant good roleplay is the key.a character can only win one time, and can choose between an xp award or a named item.
its not a shield on the wall, or an npc, but it is that small you did one hell of a job playing this character.
just a thought
-
still a popularity contest, just with more judges.

We still have rewards for good roleplay. I have given out tons of XP and my avatar is full of custom loot I have given out for cool RP, and the other DMs do the same.
-
dang I must really suck then
-
your not alone….
-
I have ever earned two things my entirety of playing. a whip and a set of armor. Sadly the armor I could not wear for I had a mage that could not done it. :'(
-
Liked Hellz post. Tangible things good. Nice to leave a mark..if it happens it happens.
Tiny bit off topic, but I used to worry more about this sort of stuff… I recently found some other folks' forum posts about an old character from years ago and realized that my character was noticed even more than I thought. It actually made me feel pretty happy and also wonder why it should matter.
I guess my point is ...have fun with the people you are playing with and don't worry too much how many cool points you get.

I enjoy seeing custom loot made for PCs who survive arduous quests or create a ton of conflict and action around the server with their deeds. I would like to see more of this, honestly.
-
I am always looking and trying to earn this.

Then create conflict. <.<
