V5 Teasers Discussion

@Broken:
Anyway, back on topic. With the way you are now handling areas (chucking out needless forests and saving space) are we going to see a more varied selection of "DMQ Areas" being used? By which I mean, in the past several DM quests lead our party to several different areas IC-wise but were all using the exact same map with the exact same layout. I've always assumed this was due to a lack of space in the module or something. I suppose you could also tack on the question of DM Quests/Plots themselves, how are they going to be handled? Will they be revolving around Arabel and the land itself or throw us into more distant lands and one-off visits to other places in Faerun and beyond?
I think it's mostly safe for me to answer, that yes, that's why things were done that way but also, yes, we're going to try to add some variance to that. A lot of things will be much more focused in and around Arabel but we do want to have the freedom to take you beyond, to such "other places," and hopefully will not have to re-use the maps too much. If it does happen, it sort of does have to.. curse this decade old game and the failures that came after it. ;)
@Broken:
Secondly, how are you guys planning to utilize food and drink now that the old hunger/thirst scripts are gone? Will they be similar to potions in which they give you a small boost to certain stats along with adverse effects, or is there a more complex and fleshed out hunger/thirst script being developed?
This is something we're working on but giving it bonuses like you mention is definitely one of our many motives. Whether it makes it or not I cannot say, but what is wanted is something that will have characters eat and drink without the annoying scripts bugging players all the time. It should award and be fun, not be a constant alarm clock.
@Broken:
And thirdly, I've noticed this topic and I am wondering if the stance on custom classes has changed? I'll be all for it, but you'd want to finish up the Sorceror themes and Monk stances first, imo. Unless.. they're already done.
I'll let another DM answer this, I don't pay any sort of attention to this kind of stuff because I still like vanilla fighters. genius

Will the city have any of the old districts from v4/v3 or will they be all new?
-
They'll all be redesigned. <,<

-
With the new temples going in, does this mean the outlying ones (like Auril in Flynn and Malar in the Hullack) will be going away? Honestly, I'm more concerned with the one to Auril.. you know, on a personal level
-
wow.. there is a working aurilite shrine I've never seen! Damn it!
On today's spoiler: yes, yes! Shaundakul is the best god out there!
-
We intend to keep all the shrines and references to past characters who have been honored in the module. Though some may need to be moved as some areas will not be present in the v5 module to make room for new things.

Can't wait to learn about this enlightened faction thing, it sounds like its gonna be really awesome :)
-
finally a chance to play a red wizard since they were booted out oh so long ago!
-
Oh my, the pit just sounds glorious!
So much fun can be had there, just or unjust!
-
I've got only one concern. Prisons are there to actually punish people for criminal behavior. But going to this Pit thing sounds like winning a ticket to Disneyland. Won't it oocly encourage people to commit crimes just to get there and check it out?
-
Prisons are there to punish characters for criminal behavior. Not people. I'm sure the pit is a terrible awful place that will be a lot of fun to RP being miserable in as players.
EDIT: Comitting actual crimes really ought to be encouraged if your character's alignment matches it.
-
Also, it does not sound as if it is your own choice when you get OUT again.
-
It certainly seems that it does encourage committing crimes, but I don't see why that is bad. I do hope, however, that the dangers presented in said Pit can cause a real chance of dying. It seems that it won't be a "winning ticket to Disneyland" as much as a "winning ticket to the Ruins Maze" (or some other very dangerous area), definitely more -fun- than a prison cell, but also much more dangerous. Seems like it'll just be a more interactive way of having things happen.
Wyrmguard seems good too, I like its openness. Having too many human-only or human-preferred factions really does cut down on the people who would otherwise play other races.
-
Fundamentally, in an Roleplay Game, getting locked up in prison and left to rot is extremely boring.
The Pit has been designed to aleviate this problem. It's not attempting to be a "Solution" to criminal behaviour, but to enhance your enjoyment of criminal behaviour and getting caught.

This is basically accurate. The Pit will have dangers that can certainly cause the death of a character if the character is not careful. Without spoiling too much, there will be systems in place to give lower level characters some leeway so that new players to the server that pickpocket and get caught don't just get arrested and brutally slaughtered immediately.
All of the details aren't finalized yet, but it certainly won't be "Disneyland." It's just not going to be boring as all piss, which has been a huge complaint since the beginning of the different guard systems. If a character has served his sentence or has been in The Pit for a very long time, and the guards get suspicious that s/he's just up to no good (being too obvious, etc.), they can be unceremoniously tossed out as well, or maybe have his/her things confiscated (temporarily or permanently), all things will vary. It'll also be fleshed out and polished a lot more when everything is actually going on "in game." I'm sure fine-tuning will take place, but you get the general idea. Get arrested, have things to do and ways to progress or be entertained - as opposed to just sitting and watching paint dry (unless that's what your character wants to do, at which point that will also be an option).
It certainly seems that it does encourage committing crimes, but I don't see why that is bad.
We've always liked crime if it was done in a way that was fun for everyone. Why wouldn't we encourage that? :twisted:
-
The Pit sounds like an awesome concept, v5 can't come soon enough
-
Awesome, reminds me of a mexican prison
are there going to be specialty shops inside? like a merchant selling +1 versus lawful weapons.
-
The thing that I most like about it is that this will give people way more reason to take risks, especially doing things like small crimes that don't seem to happen anymore. I actually really enjoyed when there were bar fights, duels in the streets, pickpockets and stuff happening all the time. Now instead of sitting in jail for ten minutes for doing something brash, you get to go to the Pit which sounds like it'll probably be a lot of fun. Heck, I'd probably make a criminal character just to see what its like inside.
Also, I'm so glad these spoilers are back, they do a lot to build up anticipation for v5.

We have no problems dropping spoilers, they're delicious. Moloch just had a certain flair for it and his screenshots were great. We'll try to keep them coming, maybe not quite as often but we won't let the spoilers fade away!
