RE: General Discussion Regarding Loot Levels and Storyteller Freedom
To clarify on the faction argument. It seems whack to make loot the incentive for joining a faction. I've never really understood why it's so important that DM factions get the best loot. PC factions are just as valid even if they don't last as long.
At this juncture it's not even necessary to wear the specific faction gear anymore so long as the faction colors are adhered to, so what's the problem?
It's also kind of a weird self-own to say that faction tier loot should be the tops because otherwise nobody would join the faction. You really think the faction is so uninteresting that the only reason anyone would join it is for loot that isn't impotent? If so why did you make the faction? Seems better to make a faction that is cool and interesting so people inherently want to join it.
There was another server I played on that had a faction of impotent lawkeepers who were underfunded and all their gear was mundane and ugly looking, and people joined the faction in droves because they thought the concept was interesting and fun.
Idk why it'd be any different here, and I kinda doubt it is.
All nasty sarcasm and tongue in cheek aside I really think you should consider it. As a once storyteller I can attest that making loot became so clinical and full of buerocracy that I would get crazy high levels of anxiety every time I saw people do something cool and I wanted to give them flavorful, interesting loot that wouldn't also be impotent af and thrown out the moment they got into a faction, because I knew exactly what I would have to go through to get it to them.
Tinkering Item Suggestion
So this one's kinda wild and would require scripting or some kind of toolset wizardry but I'm sure zool can do it.
The Molten-Ingot Caster.
"An insulated crossbow-shaped furnace primarily powered with what might be considered a crude and unstable combination of enchantment and gnomish engineering. It is insulated with platinum as a sort of insulation, yet emanates a low and constant heat until the furnace is opened. The concept is simple. An ingot goes in. A steam of molten metal shoots out on the pull of a trigger."
Components: 5 Iron Ingots. 4 Platinum Ingots. 5 copper wire. 3 enchanted fire agate. 1 essence of power.
Special Use: consume ingot.
Special Use 2: fire molten spout at target.
The effects and dmg should be dependent on the ingot consumed. I'd leave the dmg up to a smarter person than myself but I've a few thoughts on the effects.
Copper Ingot: Applies 50% vuln. to Electricity
Tin Ingot: Vanilla. No bonus effect.
Bronze Ingot: Applies 50% vuln. to Fire
Iron: Applies an extra 1d8 magic dmg on top of the standard base dmg. (Vs. Fey and Outsiders.)
Silver: Prevents lycans from shifting between forms for x amount of rounds. +2d8 Divine Dmg vs undead and lycans.
Gold: Adds 3d10 gold to target's inventory.
Adamantine: Applies DR to target for x amount of rounds.
Cobalt: Applies Slow effect to target. Also 65% fire immunity.
Titanium: +1d4 fire/cold/acid/Electricity dmg on top of base dmg.
Mithril: Applies SR to target for x amount of rounds.
I think it's a big ol chore of an idea. But it's mine and I'm posting it.
Specific Self-Serving Crafting Suggestions
Please add Compound Crossbows. Recipe should match the bows as in: crossbow type + 2 cams. Stats are up to the dm team though I would recommend the same stats. And def. At least the same attack bonuses for the purchase of dr.
Silver arrows and silver bolts should Iinclude like 1d4 divine dmg vs shapechangers as well. Or something like that. As it stands they only provide 1 divine dmg and 2 bludgeoning dmg vs. undead.
Silver coated weapons have wrong stats.
As stated above. For some reason silver weapons don't get +2 ab vs undead and lycans as they once did and instead do +1 vs a lot of things.
I guess that's fine but it kinda makes silver coated weapons pointless against pc lycans who get like 15 dr vs +1 weapons at level 8 or something.
Next time I'll make a cleric lycan hunter I guess?
