Paladins

Never happen. People would know that the Silent/Still Curelight was a curelight not a lay on hands.
You don't need to do lay on hands to be a paladin
No, but after seeing "cleric" in the logon list, people would ask the supposed paladin to "prove" themselves a paladin by doing so.
You would be surprised.
I've played a Cleric who pretended to be a fighter, who only ever cast spells in front of two or three people, no one ever metagamed it, and when she did cast in front of someone I'd always get a "Wait.. you're a cleric!?" tell.
Same now with Nysarra, she doesn't hide the fact she is a cleric, yet even now i still get the odd message when someone sees her casting healing spells.
Guilty. I still can't believe she's a cleric. >_>
-
I don't know what would be funnier, people not metagaming and playing along or people blatantly metagaming right in front of me.

Definately the latter.
So long as its not me.

"Associating with evil" is a bit vague to me.
I mean, what if, for example, a banite calls for adventurers to help defend Zhentil Keep against goblins? If the paladin goes to save the lifes of the innocents living there, would he be associating with evil in a way that would make him fall from grace?
Similarly, if a paladin makes a similar call and a banite shows up, would he have to refuse his help, even if as much people as possible would be needed to fight the threat?
-
Yes.
Paladins shouldnt associate with any kind of evil, no matter the mutual cause, not even when he's the fluffy killer rabbit from nextdoor.
-
Palidans are suppost to be -the- perfect embodyment of good after all. Never associating with evil, suppose to be smart and witty enough to see through all tricks and deception, standing against evil even if it means endangering the entire world!….
Man, being the perfect good sounds hard. D:

If you want the easy life, play a LG fighter :wink:

Why not? What's better, having the Evil guy run around setting orphanages on fire, or have him work towards good -for whatever reason- under your watchful eye? Which of the two gets more Good done?

Problems with Detect evil
-People used to avoid problem solving.
-There was no counter for it
-Pallies used it more then Wab post LolcatsSolutions
-Have a spell like (Protection from good) block detect evil
-Have pallies have a limit how many times a day or how often they can use it (like rest)
-It tells you how many evil people are in the area just not who.I have no problem with a pally with evil if their trying to convert him to good, or their swinging swords at each other besides that obvious evil no no!
-
Personally I think the above post is an ok idea. But maybe limit how many times a paladin can use the ability. Because you only have so many protection from good items before you run out. Kinda rigging stuff towards a paladin.
Honestly I just dont like the hole idea of a paladins detect evil like that unless maybe specificly requested for from a DM. Such as you find a funny looking alter that no one has seen before. Blam Detect Evil.

Make DE cost 500 XP each use ..won't be spammed then.
Or better still if it fails to detect make it cost xp that will fix the probablem of peaple just using it instead of rping first that way it goes ..
talk to character if the characters answers sound abit ebol use DE if they sound fine isn't used as it will cost the paladin xp. -
Bring back DE. If evil's plots are thwarted by some newb spamming DE they probably weren't going to make it very far in the first place. Worried about factions scanning everyone with a Paladin while recruiting? Don't be, the smart evil character will just arrange to have him delayed or killed.
-
How about instead of bringing back DE, we can roleplay and figure out if the person is evil or not.
-
C'mon, people. It's not hard AT ALL to find out if a person is evil on CoA.
-
How about a Paladin earns Detect Evil over time using RP and experience, like a reward for doing well from there God.
I know playing a Paladin can be hard but you need something to aid you, as you can not use RP alone. The other point is that you cant always get a DM, to do some type of DE on someone before working with them.
Would you not think a Paladin would sense a Vampire walking up to them or hiding in some Shadow? Due to them being pure Evil. Would you expect the vampire to RP it?
Anyway I have play my Paladin for sometime now, some tell me I don't play it right and other say your good at it. All I know is I do the best with what I have and know.

If the character emotes [Smirks], Sneers or {Snickers}, there's a 80% chance he's evil. :)

I've barely read any of this thread because what I read near the beginning made it seem like another boring and tedious argument about Paladins. So here's my thoughts on the matter, sorry if they're completely unrelated to the topic, but as I said I've only read the first few posts;
@Hanging:
Paladins, regardless of if they can detect evil or not, should avoid/fight evil. Lack of detect evil isn't an excuse to be blissfully ignorant: Paladins are vigilent for evil, and when they see it they oppose it. If an ally does something evil, or even questionably immoral, a Paladin opposes the act.
ie: Commoner #3 is killed by goblins. Joe Normalguy loots Commoner #3, taking all his gold and shirt. Frank McPaladin should immediately demand that he return the stolen goods, if he doesn't then Frank should bring him to justice and refuse to associate with him in the future for he is obviously evil.
Hanging around with Joe Normalguy will cause loss of Paladinhood if I catch the scenario.
@Evil:
Just because you're evil doesn't mean you're a master of deception. If your 6 charisma -2 bluff half orc is hanging around Paladins, pretending to be good aligned and doing so in a compitant manner I shall beat you with a trout.
I don't care if your evil character acts like he's good infront of good aligned people in order to further his agenda, but only if you've got the stats to back it up. If you don't roleplay your stats I will beat you with a trout.
If your character doesn't invest ranks in bluff, or isn't a very charismatic person:
Unacceptable: "Let us go forth my stalwart allies, we must defeat that dragon to save the city! Huzzah for Good Alignments!"
Acceptable: "Let us go forth allies, we must defeat that dragon because he might have a Necromancy book I want- I mean to save the city! I'm not an evil undead animating criminal! You can't prove that!"
@Roleplaying:
Paladins are expected to adhere STRICTLY to the paladins' code. By strictly I mean that a single violation will cause complete loss of paladinship (And a subsiquent chaotic or evil alignment shift).
The paladin's code can be found HERE. These oaths can't be adjusted, they are what they are, all paladins swear them before becoming paladins.
@Seriously:
It is highly unlikely that detect evil will ever come back. Rather than pushing a button and instantly knowing if someone is evil or not people should be paying attention and attempting to root out people who are evil. The guy eating babies is not good aligned, and just because there's no yellow text in your combat log saying he's evil doesn't mean you should be questing with him.
If you honestly have no clue IC, even after doing your very best to make sure they're good, that a character is evil than you're not roleplaying your paladin poorly by being near them. If a character is a tiefling or a vampire or some sort of face-eating monster from the plane of bad dreams and they're not giving off the "I might be evil" vibe, then they're probibly not being RP'd correctly by their player and that's not your problem, and a DM will try to give you a hint if we're around.

Solutions
-Have a spell like (Protection from good) block detect evil
-Have pallies have a limit how many times a day or how often they can use it (like rest)
-It tells you how many evil people are in the area just not who.I'd like to add
-have some of the less law-abiding NPCs sell lead-lined armor and/or helmets.
Detect Evil "can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it." Put a 'thin sheet' of lead on the in-or outside of your armor, and you're immune to Detect Evil forever, no need for potions of Protect From Good. -
You don't understand me. Detect Evil is a mechanical ability that is (or was, and is on most servers) perfectly IC. All the "abuse" that has happened seems to have been perfectly IC. The onus to dealing with this ability lies squarely on evil.
If they can't even do that, how can they ever hope to accomplish their plans? The path to awesome is oftentimes paved with difficulty.
Personally, I thought it was much better roleplay when people went "I must warn you, I sense TAAAAINT in your friend" than now, when you see all kinds of paladins quest with obviously evil characters sometimes.
In addition, this seems to create more DM work- now you have to watch Paladins all the time to make sure they're doing their investigative work, and send them warnings if they get chummy with evil that's pretending to be good or neutral.
Naturally this is just idle musing since the change has been made, so all that is left now is to adjust to the new state of things and embrace it.
