Neutral Alignment

I respectfully disagree. Intent is not factored in at the time of the action, but it does factor in when your intent is realized
So if Robin Hood gives the poor out of his good heart is just as good as another robber who gives to the poor because he fears being found with the coins?

@Dedagin:
for me, with the exception of druids,
a true neutral character will always do whatever is in there own best interests.That's what I call evil.

Neutral characters are most people in the world.
Most people do what is best for themselves.
Are most people evil?

It's evil if they don't care about how many must suffer for their best interests. Good guys can do something for themselves without getting evil points, give the poor guys a break.

When the theft is commited it's an evil act, giving him X amount of evil points. When he gives to the poor, he gets Y amount of good points.
It's probably a more good act to give to the needy, than to take from the rich, so he turns out to be good overall.

Quite literally, you can even see the numbers on your character sheet. It is based on a 0-100/0-100 on the [Chaos|Law] / [Evil|Good] axis spread roughly 1/3rd spread per alignment with the middle section (31-69) either way being Neutral, 0/0 being CE, 100/100 being LG.

@Dedagin:
LN– as long as it is not illegal ( or they wont get caught) will do whats best for themselves.
CN-- Legal or not, no difference for their character, as long as they come out on top.While Lawful people have an innately deeper respect for the rules, order, and 'the proper way' things should be done, they need not be primarily concerned about the legality of their actions.

@Swifty:
Basically..I feel like way too many people play neutral to the extremes and aren't quite grasping what neutral means. For example, many people think Neutral people are just as likely to do good, as they are evil.
However, I think that's wrong.
You lost me right there. A classic case of "you're doing it wrong" rant.
I honestly believe there can be characters with a special understanding of what balance is and bent on maintaining it, helping the cause of perceived evil when forces of good overcomes and vice versa or matching every vile action they have to make with a an equivalent act of kindness.
And even people who are neutral because their moral code is putting an overwhelming emphasis on only only one principle (LN justicars come to mind) are indeed as likely to commit acts perceived as good or evil by others, as long as they are relelntless in pursuing their main principle (supremacy of law if LN or sewing mischief in case they are CN). -
This is philosophical neutrality and it is frankly the most difficult to pull off. Just play it as you would Geralt in the Witcher 3. Capable of helping, but won't unless compensated, not a bad person, but will look away if it doesn't concern him.

This seems a good (sorry) way to describe N characters to me.
