Expectations and advice regarding Player Behaviour
-
@Cyber:
This is just a friendly reminder, but we do not desire to catch people engaging in cyber sex.
Further, while this server deals with some mature issues and violence is a part of the game. Do recall that certain graphic acts of violence, specifically rape should not be roleplayed here under any circumstances.
This is a game, I do not log in to deal with a crime that has victimized every single woman I know in real life, which many still awake from in the middle of the night screaming with nightmares. This is not something "fun" to bring into this game world. Keep it out.
@Use:
Japanese is not a language spoken in the FR. Nor is Chinese, German, and many other languages.
Stick to English, or use English using the implemented system for canon languages like Elven and Drow.
So in short, just stick to English.
@DMs:
@Division:
DMs will sometimes logon to play characters just for the sake of playing them. It's prefered that players who see that DM don't send tells asking for DM opinions, DM help to warp them into quest areas, etc. We do like to play occaisionally too people, and it's a royal pain to log out, and login 3 or 4 times in a couple hours to do DM duties for someone.
@Mr.:
And honestly, if you do that to me. I'll just boot you from the server.
I know Mithrandir once banned someone for 24 hours for harassing him. I don't blame him, when we log on to play our characters we just want to play. That's it. We're here to have fun. Not do our DM duties.
I'm aware that many of you think its fun to find out DMs old player accounts or their current player accounts and spread the word around the server.
I've made it known that this is not appreciated by many DMs. Now I'm saying point blank, I will ban people from IRC and the forums for this. There is a reason we have secret accounts, and change our account names when we become DMs.
Frankly, once you're a DM you can't play your old characters anymore. People treat you differently, you're pestered by Tells every time you log on asking for DM help or favors or just brown nosing, or people assume you're a new walking DM quest. We make secret accounts to avoid this, but then some clever asshole thinks its okay to spread the secret and ruin that account to and totally destroy our characters. You know how you feel when you die on a DM quest? Now imagine your character is totally ruined so you can't log in with him again, and its just because of some asshole that thought it was okay to break trust and spread around someone's account when its clear they were trying to keep it secret? I know at least three DMs that gave up characters when their accounts were leaked like this.
Even worse, people occasionally get an account wrong and think a regular player is a DM. Then they harass that player, and ruin his fun on the server too. I can almost forgive players who bleep over DMs, since we tend to have a thicker skin-but it is totally unacceptable to do this and then cause trouble for another player.
So if I even hear that someone is doing this in IRC or the forums-I will ban them from both mediums. If you can't respect the DMs boundaries and desires to be able to log into the server anonymously just to play and have some fun-I'm inclined to think you don't even deserve the right to log in yourself.
Since this simple concept doesn't seem to stick, we'll promptly boot anyone sending unsolicited tells to DMs logged as PCs.
Also, some people apparently find amusing to guess and reveal the supposed hidden identities of DMs as players. So amusing, in fact, that some players mistaken as DMs have started to complain about tells asking them to solve a bug, posess an NPC and distribute ph4t l00t. I, too, find this so terribly amusing that starting today I will start banning people from IRC if they engage in this amusing exercise.
@Leb:
Honestly, if you have come across the identity of a DM, please please please PLEASE do not take that as your cue to bother them when they are trying to play. We need time to just play and unwind as well. Being accosted with bug reports, and things of that nature when we are on PC's is really not appreciated, and I am taking the Moloch point of view on this. The next person to do this to me when I am logged in as a PC will simply be booted.
@OOC:
OOC is sometimes unavoidable and generally fine if clearly labelled as such.
That having been said, try to bear in mind that some people are taken out of the element by OOC. Each time you use OOC, you should consider whether you should avoid it if possible to help keep everyone's RP experience enjoyable. If you MUST go OOC, but only with 1 person, then take it to tells instead of talk/party, so that only that 1 person is impacted.
@OOC:
Lately we've had a batch of complaints about players being rude OOC to others. I don't care if someone metagamed to hell and back in order to grief you, loot you and steal your significant other. If you insult a player you will be banned. If other player insults you and you respond with more insults, you will both be banned. If you can't remain civil OOC, you don't belong in CoA.
If you have a complaint that cannot be resolved with the players in question, you bring it to the DMs and no one else. You do not bring it up in IRC, forums, send abusive tells to the player you have a disagreement with, or anything of the sort. Once again, if you are found to have been abusive, no matter how grievous your disagreement with the player, you will be banned.
It doesn't matter if another player is sending you pictures of him eating babies alive, doing your sister or reading Cosmopolitan. You don't deal with it yourself, you talk to a DM so that he or she deals with it. Insulting or harassing other players OOC for ANY reason is a bannable offense, and we will ban you before we deal with the original alleged offender.
I find appalling that some players consider reporting an issue to a DM to be immature (as if reporting a crime to the police was the same as tattletelling in recess) but have no qualms to engage in insults over tells.
And to make this crystal clear: It does not matter how or where you harass another player.
@Player:
Every player is entitled to his or her own opinion on every aspect of this server. NO player is entitled to verbally abuse another player in any way, shape, or form whether it be about their style of play, lifestyle, age, or anything else you can think of.
Compliments are fine, and are encouraged. Those who do believe they have the right to verbally harrass another player over their playing style, character build, or any other criteria will find they also have the right to be banned from the forums, irc, and server.
In regards to character builds or playing style, if you feel the need to give constructive criticism, take it to PMs and only continue at the player's discretion. If the player does not want to listen to your criticism that is their right, and you should back off immediately if they've made their displeasure known to you. If you believe their behavior or whatever factor you were offering criticism on lies directly against a rule of the server, then notify a DM and allow us to handle the matter.
Remember, verbal harrassment of ANY kind can and will result in bans. Everyone is here to have fun, no matter which way they decide to pursue it.
@Characters:
We prefer that none of your characters should have histories with each other. This includes characters you have previously played and those you are currently playing. You should not be playing your own character's friend/brother/second-cousin. It ultimately leads to silly situations where the two of them need to be in the same room together or where there is conflict of interest.
It will be considered metagaming if you use knowledge from one of your characters with another, and claim that one told the other.
It is acceptable, of course, to have a history with another player's character.
@Playing:
At this stage of v4.0 we would like to plug the benefits of playing a single character at a time. There will be many intrigue plots and surprises around the server and certain players and factions will be getting heavily involved in shaping and making those changes happen. Factions will also be opposing one another a lot more. It will greatly diminish the impact of the changes for players if they are getting information from a spread of sources over different characters and having to keep straight in their mind which character knows what exactly.
One character in one or more factions = good.
Multiple characters spread around a mishmash of factions = not so good.
Players that do choose to play multiple characters are encouraged to only get heavily involved with one, playing others only as side characters.
@Mr.:
This is a very blunt and direct message since in the course of the last three days I have had several people come close to leaving the server for the same problem, so I'm going to make something very clear.
Arabel is suppose to be a fun place, and some people's actions are making it a non-fun place. So frankly, if I find you making this game unfun for someone I will take drastic actions to make sure you can't do that anymore.
So here's the problem.
METAGAMING
Here's the specific.
1. It is not legitimate to talk to someone in Tells to find out about their character and then act on that information as if it is in character. I'd encourage people to not talk about their character with other people through Tells or in IRC and let them find everything out in game-but sometimes you like to talk about your character and you should not have to fear someone cheating in this manner.
2. DMs deal with metagaming. Not judgemental uninformed players. If you think, suspect, or have any reason to believe someone metagamed you TELL a DM you do NOT harass that player repeatedly, accuse them of cheating, or tell them they are wrong to the point where they become so upset they consider quiting the server. Its fine to say, "Hey, I think you made a mistake are you sure you should know xxx" if they say yes and you still disagree then tell a DM and we will decide if its Metagaming not you. Frankly, this applies to griefing too.
I'm honestly ready to start banning people for calling other players Griefers or Metagamers without even bothering to let a DM determine if the allegations are true or not.
@OOC:
We know that sometimes you guys like to help each other out on a friendly OOC level, and that WOULD BE fine, but depending on what it is that is being asked, it can result in catastrophe.
Remember there can still be IC repurcussions for IC actions that are OOCly influenced, so if you are asked to do a favour, weigh all possible outcomes and results if you want to risk going on with it.
I would recommend not doing extensive OOC favours, or ones that go too far out of your character.
I'm not talking simple ones like not full looting, or using subdual instead of FD. Those are fine because they keep people from not enjoying themselves, and again those are at your discretion.
I'm talking about big favours, like "Help me end my character in a cool way" or "come to my event" and your character would not seriously do the things asked by the player.
Such OOC favors are seen as 'scripting' and not 'roleplaying' and are therefore frowned upon heavily by the DM team. Use your head and your best judgement, because nothing sucks more than losing a character over out of game and out of character circumstances.
@Character:
We'd like to remind people to keep to plausible non-disruptive skin colors, and consider carefully skin colour choices even with the expanded range of the new patch.
@Naming:
Generic names are reserved for DM use only. This means that starting now any new character with a generic name will have to recreate and give it a real name.
Some examples of generic names are "Commoner", "Old Man", "Begger #43", "Monk level 12", "Hooded Halfling", etc.A blank name field is cause for deletion as well.
I'm witnessing a rash of folks who seem to enjoy making grossly obvious references to recognizable literary characters or blatantly naming them after figures drawn from popular culture, actors etc.
The worst are those who stitch idiotic phrases together with punctuation and try to pass it off as a name.Please stop this and adhere to names that are befitting of the setting.
If I have to ask someone more than three or four times to cease what is an essentially distracting and annoying practise you're simply going to find your character vault has been emptied unceremoniously of Ewen Mcgregors and Harrison Fords the next time you log in.
@OOC:
It's sort of a tradition to give out gear to IC and OOC friends when a character retires (due to death, boredom or any other reason). Donations to IC friends are ok to some extent (if your character is just leaving to another town, why is he giving everything he posesses out and leaving only with his underpants on?). Donations to OOC friends are borderline metagaming. We usually tolerate them if they are minor, and generally speaking we don't go around searching the logs to see if someone is dumping his entire inventory on some OOC friend's new character.
That said, there's an implication in the stuff we tolerate: the departing character is doing so for good. Since we turned a blind eye in the past, it seems that a large number of people think now that it's ok to dump a large part of someone's inventory on other characters only to come back after some time and then get the favor returned, also in a fairly OOC fashion. That is definitely not ok. If your character is retiring, and you want to dish out some items, delete him. If you want to keep him in your vault just in case, don't give anything away. In case of doubt of what is acceptable in terms of donations, do a quick check with a DM.
Since we want to believe most of these donations don't come out of a desire of cheating, we're not going to crack down on past cases, but we will be looking more closely in the future.
Of course, passing items from a player's retiring character to another player's character in order to get them back later for a new character of the first player is still considered cheating and will get both players banned if found out.
Read this. Twice! Specifically: We usually tolerate them if they are minor
Please do not donate gear to other characters. Unloading all your loot onto your friend's character is pretty close to metagaming, since your character shouldn't really want to give all that stuff away. It's also very imbalancing to the loot levels of the server which we try to maintain.
If you are ending your character, keep the major loot on him/her (Except plot items, of course.)
You're going to get into a lot of trouble if you're giving away all your +2 gear that you got a year ago. Check with a DM if you're unsure what you can or can't give away.
Just keep things strictly in character
@Bypassing:
If a quest has a minimum party size that means you have to bring a minimum amount of people. It does not mean you have to invite people in your party and go solo the quest.
Doing the quest solo is cheating and cheating is a bannable offense.
Using conversations to bypass time restrictions on quests is an exploit. Leaving the party and rejoining the party while in the middle of a quest conversation is not permissable, and is grounds for immediate banning from the server. Furthermore, players who allow other players to use this exploit will be considered accomplices and will also be banned immediately.
Players who see other players leaving and joining parties in such a manner should report the incident to a DM with screenshots and log files. Players involved in parties that are found to have used this exploit will also be considered accomplices.
We are aware that some scripts for certain quests make bringing people who have not passed the 24 hour marker very easy. Steps are being taken to correct them, but in the meantime, that is not an excuse to attempt to bypass the time restrictions.
Try to make sure no one has done the quest in the last 24 hours, if you have any doubts. If a certain player is unable to go due to a bug, that is still not a legitimate excuse to exploit, and should be handled by contacting a DM or posting in Bug Reports.
@Using:
I've said this before several times but I'll repeat it again. If you find a character in your vault that doesn't belong to you, DO NOT use it, and contact a DM. DO NOT use it to log in anf THEN contact a DM.
People caught ignoring this rule will be banned first, then asked questions.
@Circumnavigating:
When we ban people this is done for a reason, this means that this player is no longer welcome on our server and should not be interacting with anything in it.
Roleplaying by proxy whereby banned people are giving "instructions" to players who then carry them out is therefor also not allowed.Infact, if I find that this is happening then I will personally ban whomever is serving as a proxy, when we as DMs ban someone this is done for a reason and circumventing something as major as a ban is not something I will tolerate.
The whole meaning of a ban is to prohibit and forbid someone from playing(and also the meaning of the word, and the intent behind it) and I find it quite sad that this post was infact needed.

IRC
Some basic guidelines.
-Suggestions go in the suggestion forum, or via e-mail to DMs.
-Issues with a DM, their plot, or their NPCs go to that DM, if you do not know which DM is handling what, ask another, and you will be redirected.
-Issues with another player's actions go to a DM, or in Private correspondence with that player if you feel you can self-mediate.
-IC Issues should be kept In-character, not brought up in IRC chat.
-OOC Abuse will absolutely not be tolerated, from anyone.Temporary and Permanent bans from #coa IRC space will be issued when these are not followed, and result in problems.
@IC:
#CoA is for chatting about the server, but not for dropping IG secrets that most people won't know about. If you want to talk about something everyone knows already, such as "Orc attacked the city last week" or "All the guards have blue helmets now", that's fine, but telling the entire channel that XX secretly killed YY in the sewers and XX is actually a follower of Bale is out of order. It's unfair for the players involved, and spoils the mystery for everyone else.
@Mr.:
A lot of players are getting into a fuss because of things that are done in #CoA, and that's a problem for a while; but when that shit spills over into the private faction channels then there's a basis for irritance.
I've a simple phrase for all of you: Grow Up.
Those of you being accosted, don't be so sensitive, buck up and ignore it.
Those of you being the insensitive pricks ganging up on things that don't go your way or just causing hell and problems for the sheer joy of it; stop.
I'm at my wit's end with it; private Faction channels are meant for those that have questions about a faction to come in and ask them, and for those within a faction to just hang around and talk about the faction and so forth; it's not for people to enter, make a fuss and be immature. Seriously, grow up, we're all here to enjoy a game, not have a miniature form of a high-school in a chat-room.
As a side note, Faction Channels are not the place to get into a communitive bitch fest about certain other people. Seriously that crap needs to stop.
Just stop the bitching, and the whining and the assholing, or there will be fire and brimstone raining from the heavens and some serious wrath. Use IRC for the purpose we intended it, not to piss each other off.

Forums
It is time to cut back the chatter that is happening in even the most serious threads. Before you post, think if something about lumberjacks really does contribute to a discussion about playing effective evil.
It has become a pain to read some threads because so much garbage is thrown onto the pearls that it is impossible to find them.
Cut your banter or restrict it to the Off Topic forum. Irrelevant posts will be deleted without comment.Edit: I will also enforce decent avatars. As has been said several times, animated or overly large avatars are to be avoided.
@Spam:
We tend to be tolerant with people posting humorous comments in threads even if they take the discussion off topic. Nothing wrong with the odd comment here and there that doesn't add much to a discussion. But we've noticed an increasing tendency in some posters to post inane comments for the sake of it, apparently with the only goal of increasing their post count. This will stop now.
Otherwise, we will be forced to remove access to the forums to those that use them as an e-penis enlargement tool.
@Signatures:
It seems people are once again starting the flood this board with all sorts of cool/pretty/etc images in their signatures.
Do not post images in your signature, and to further that keep your signature fairly small.
The reason people come here is to read posts or post posts, the problem with all the big signatures is that the signal to noise ratio gets skewed quite hard to the noise ratio. We're trying to read your posts, not look at some image or 30line piece of poetrie that we have to scroll past 50 times per thread. If you want some cool image dump it in your avatar, that's what it's for.
So in short, no images in your signature and keep the signature small, you'll do everyone a favour.
PS. Yes, that includes house shields/emblems/etc, you can post those in the IC board if you want but not automatically at the end of every post.
It's the DMs job to moderate the forums, and make judgement calls on them.
Posting antagonistic OOC messages, even in response to other antagonistic messages, may result in a forum ban for the poster.
thank you for your time.
@Leaving:
This is silly. Stop doing it. If you leave letters in a public place, don't expect them to make it to their intended recipient. This is gross metagaming, and abusing the forum. If you want to do it, contact a dm IG and drop off a scribed note directing people to a forum post. Otherwise, the Harpers, the Zhentarim, Lhal, the Obarskyrs, and a tarrasque will all get copies of your letter, and they'll be able to see through whatever thin poetic sheen you put over it to get at the real meaning.
Forums are not a place where you can commit crimes without risk. Slandering nobles, making illegal postings, disturbing the peace, etc will have appropriate consequences. We understand sometimes it seems like a good idea in order to get a plot going, but do it in game when it costs you something, and there's risk in getting caught.

Scripted Quests
In general, there is a rule that some players need reminding of that scripted quests are by no means whatsoever roleplay free zones. While there is some slippage of memories necessary due to the fact that they can be repeated, your characters are essentially accountable for their actions during scripted quests exactly as they would be during DM quests or any other time.
A few things in particular are liable to draw the attention of DMs. Questing with people your character would not normally associate amicably with, repeatedly taking quests that do not fit your character or choosing options that within quests that do not fit your character, particularly when these things are resulting in obtaining the maximum rewards available. There are plenty of quests out there to choose from, and there are plenty of people out there to interact with.
If your character stood by while someone on the quest summoned demons and undead, your character stood by while someone summoned demons and undead. If your character bullied a feeble old man for extra gold on a scripted quest, your character bullied a feeble old man for extra gold. If a DM sees this actions may be taken same as they would if you had done it anywhere.
Non-hostile bosses
These are put in by DMs occasionally to give players other options than the straight hack and slash, but they should generally be treated as hostile in every respect except the NWN mechanics, especially the ones where you just slew a whole bunch of their minions in their plain view. I keep see people doing ridiculous things like standing around buffing, applying healing kits and cracking wise about how they’re going to gut the boss while they chill for a bit and heal, sitting around shooting the breeze for a quarter of an hour as if they’re in a placid forest without a care in the world, even laying traps around the feet of the bosses so that as soon as they turn hostile they trigger them. It has to stop or bad roleplaying tokens are going to start getting handed out. If you would not do it to a DM possessed NPC, do not do it to a non-hostile boss on a scripted quest.
-
Everyone who uses IRC needs to read the IRC guidelines again. Lately I've been seeing very questionable behavior in #coa and it is unacceptable. If you break those rules laid down do not be surprised if a ban is tossed your way. It may be temporary but there is every chance that it's a permanent one. Also, simply because certain behavior may have gone unchecked before does not mean it's permissible now.
-
I'm bumping the part about spreading rumors about DM's player accounts. DMs on player accounts aren't DMs. They're players, we treat them like any player as much as we can. When you spread information about a DMs account, you ruin that PC for the DM. They can't play them anymore. Several DMs have quit characters in the past because of jerks like this ruining our fun on the server when we log in as players. Worse, people spread these rumors about people who aren't DMs, and then they want to quit playing their characters–only because they're actually players they can't ban you.
However, the DM team can and will ban people spreading rumors about DM accounts. So knock it off. If you've been doing this, come clean because we'll track the rumor to the source, and if we find you first, we'll ban you.
I'm serious, I was really upset when Caek had to give up Sandman because players found out he was on a player account. Now I've got players who aren't even DMs wanting to quit because jerks are spreading rumors that they are DMs.

It's almost time to start removing rude people from this community.

I'm not at all sure why it is necessary to remind players, but scenes of a Sexually Violent nature are never acceptable on CoA and will result in a Ban. It's not just against the rules, it's way off the reservation. Anyone who has any social sense at all should know that this kind of roleplay is unacceptable.
-
@Cyber:
I'm posting a reminder of this.
Rape specifically should not be alluded to, nor is it something to joke about. It is not something to roleplay. It is not something to play with at all.
This is a graphic act of violence, one inflicted upon nearly one half of all women in the world during their lives, nearly 10% of men will be raped during their lives. These women include my sisters and daughters and mother as well as numerous friends.
While we portray plenty of violence in CoA, this is one of those things that is simply too psychologically traumatic to bring into a game we play to escape the real world.
-
If you are in an situation you are not comfortable with, explain to the player in tells and ask them to stop. If this is ignored, leave and contact a DM.
Cyber sex should NOT be joked about, keep it out of CoA, IG, on IRC and the Forums. Also, this server deals with some mature issues and violence is a part of the game. Do recall that certain graphic acts of violence, specifically rape or extreme torture should not be roleplayed here under any circumstances. Rape specifically should not be alluded to, nor is it something to joke about. It is not something to roleplay. It is not something to play with at all. It does not belong here.

This means IC information stays IC. Do not bring up information that could be metagamed ICly on the IRC channel. And especially DO NOT bring up IC information on the IRC channel to taunt other players for any reason or in any way.
-
Bumping this along with the reminder about comments involving rape especially. That's a "trigger" that many people will not be expecting, prepared for, or want to deal with at all when logging into a fantasy game. I realize there is "violence" roleplayed all the time here, but when I log in to play a game about killing dragons in dungeons, I expect violence. So no excuses or wiggle room or negotiating here, this is a firm rule we ask everyone to abide by to keep the community healthy in real life.
-
Extreme torture should not be roleplayed here under any circumstances, if you are asked to stop then do so without argument. This goes to all creatures IG

Just two friendly reminders folks.
1). If someone is not comfortable roleplaying something (particularly scenes of violence), then do not try to make them, cajole them, or force them. Walk away, leave them alone. We're a PvP server; but that doesn't mean we're going to force it on people either when they go out of their way to avoid it.
2). If you dislike the way someone roleplays, but they're not breaking any rules. You don't really know the person on the other side of the screen, just their game persona. So judge not, speak no ill. Just avoid them and be nice.
Game world is big, we like to cater to all types of players and want everyone welcome. Best advise, play, have fun, if you're not having fun say so or log off or ask a DM to intervene. If you have a problem with someone, relax, avoid them and ask them to avoid you.
DMs are here to help arbitrate disputes and problems, grab us if they're happening and we'll help so everyone can still play on CoA and enjoy themselves.

The City of Arabel welcomes everyone, but for the health and future of our community we have rules in place to ensure that we remain a welcoming place for everyone. When these rules are broken, we wish to give the offender a second chance. We are humans and we all make mistakes, both players and DMs. Over the years, the DM team have given various people quite a few chances, but in the end there comes a time when the DM team cannot trust the person to be given any more chances.
Sometimes the person returns years later, and is once again given another chance. For the DM team believe people learn from their mistakes and will mature over time. However, those whom do not learn and burn their chances at the cost of our community cannot be given another chance. When no other options remain, we ban the person whom has violated our rules. No matter whom they are, a friend, an old DM or someone new, we take this action and this is always a team decision. This is one of the most important and difficult responsibility as a DM team which ensures the safety and wellbeing of our community, including the DMs themselves.
We do not take these actions lightly, nor do we like to ban anyone. However, at times it is for the best of everyone, including the offender. Often there are questions which follow from this, but the DM team do not wish to burn anyone by hanging them out. After all, it makes it much harder to return and start anew.
If there are concerns of unfair treatment, the DM team is happy to help, but we do wish to stress that how these questions are delivered is also very important to consider. Hounding down DMs for answers, making public protests over a private manner and rude behaviour is very draining for a DM to handle. We are currently in a very rough period as we prepare for the transition to EE, which many of ours are spending hundreds of hours on to ensure it goes through.Should anyone have concerns, they are welcome to approach a member in regards of it, but please have patience and understand we handle this as a team and thus our answers may be slow. Similarly, we will not explain everything which occurs behind the scene, for we wish to give everyone a fair chance to return without any stigma or public disgrace.
Thank you all for your understanding and support.
Lots of Love,
The CoA DM Team
