Coolest DnD monsters
-
Random topic but,
What are the coolest DnD monsters?
I personally like were-moles, but I'm a weirdo.
-
Dragons obviously!
-
I like Mimics. ;)
-
I gotta go look it up, but it's a Sand Demon. It's a bloodied corpse left out in the desert that a demon inhabits, becoming undead.
-
Legion Devils… they are just flat out wtf
-
Okay. Three take the top spot for me.
First is the Marut inevitable. I mean, c'mon. A huge humanoid who's one fist hits with thunder and other with lightning. And lets not forget their badass purpose: "Maruts represent the inevitability of death. They confront those who would try to deny the grave itself".Second is the Great Wyrm Blue Dragon. Not only is it the second most powerful chromatic dragon, but they're rolling in badass abilities. Between it's ability to mimic /any/ sound that it has heard, throw its voice magically anywhere, make itself look like /any/ other creature, and change its lair's appearance at its very whim through Hallucinatory Terrain and Mirage Arcana (Lava pool? What lava pool? I think you mean conveniently-placed cover that you should hide behind.) the Great Wyrm Blue Dragon is truely more fearsome of an encounter than it's CR would let on assuming you've got a smart DM. Needless to say, when you make one a Dracolich like the settings' own Sibilant Shade of Thunderholme, it becomes downright terrifying.
Third, and possibly HIGHEST on my list of "God, why don't I use these more? They're so AMAZINGLY COOL!" is the Nightwalker! While they aren't the strongest of their "nightshade" creature category (CR 16 behind the Nightcrawler's CR 18), they take the cake for me. Firstly for my point, look at this! For that image, keep in mind that the standard one is 20 ft tall, but can be advanced to as tall as 30 ft. The mere sight of them forces you to save vs. being paralyzed by fear. Should their unmodified 38 (Thirty eight) strength not be enough, they are even supplied with an ability called "crush item". With this ability, any item of large size or smaller that it can grab with both hands must succeed on a DC 34 (Thirty four) fortitude save or be instantly crushed. Even if it's magical. Sorry if you were proud of that magically sealed adamantine double-door that you put between yourself and it, because it's scrap metal now. If this, in combination with it's vast array of spell-like abilities isn't frightful enough, the Nightwalker is in possession of a Desecrating Aura. This gives the Nightwalker a 20-foot radius emanation of desecration from itself, except that the being is so evil that it counts as a shrine to an evil power for the purposes of the spell effect.
Nightwalkers are my all-time favorite plot-pushing NPC when I DM.

Gmork ran a Legion event one time back when I played Haar. He whipped out a Nightwalker about halfway through, and I basically needed a new pair of pants. They are -terrifying-, but I absolutely adore them. It's a shame that he had to use a maximized shadow fiend skin for a creature that deserves so much more aesthetically, but it was still a wild encounter.
Also, Yuan-Ti Abominations. I wish NWN had a skin for them.

New App Idea: Nightwalker.
Anyway, my favourite monster? Mimics, the bane of any lonely adventurer.
-
Gotta love a Mimic I agree….
Although I gotta put my vote in for the Gem Dragons and even moreso, the Mercury Dragon. If only because I miss the days when they were part of the Monster Manual >.>
-
Song Dragon (FR specific)
-
Aboleth. They literally know everything any of their ancestors knew, and the race is older than the world as we know it. In other words, they remember everything! And they dominate you and have slime that makes you breathe water and can turn your body malleable.
-
rust monster… always fun as a dm to drop one in there!
-
Orcs at the best monsters ever.
-
Gotta second the Aboleth. They are scary and badass.
Also like the Bahumets I think that's what they're called? The goblin/wolf shapeshifters that can eat your lifeforce. Scariest low-level monster to fight.
-
Need to work out how to script a Rust Monster.
They sound excelent!
-
Once you do, you can add the template and make a Rust dragon too.
My favs are demons though
-
Devils all the way.
-
Dunno why, but I really like Slaadi.
-
Wile I am a table top player of D&D there are many best monsters out there.
However, if there is one I want added into V5 it has to be random mimics in the quests.They will add a great spice to the game to deal with all those. "I see a chest" run up and look at all the goodies before anyone else. {Chomp}
If it is about my favorite monster it is the Nightmare all the way. Sadly Arabel can't handle mounts.

Cloakers are really fun tabletop monsters too
