Add Compound Crossbows to Crafting
-
So I was looking over the crafting tables and I was frustrated to find that bows have way better stats than crossbows. Then I saw that it was actually just that compound bows that had superior stats but that no improved crossbow alternative was available.
Crossbows are cool as hell but do way less damage than bows due to loading requirements. They require a feat to ignore the loading requirements and only receive a few extra points of dmg and an inferior critical multiplayer for their trouble. They also don't get to enjoy rapid shot.
For this reason it's my opinion craftable crossbows should have better stats than the bows.
I would recommend that the standard crossbows get the same stats as compound longbows, and that compound crossbows get better stats than compound longbows.
The stats I'd suggest for a ash compound crossbow:
+2ab vs. undead. + 1 mighty, +1 search
+2piercing dmg.Or maybe 1d6 massive critical even if that's useless against undead.

I wholeheartedly agree. Wouldn't mind seeing some nice crossbows about.
Could even do a special one for pure fighters for an arbalist sort of thing!

Yep. Crossbows need something. However, before the conversation in stats goes too far, remember they are simple weapons. So their value should be front loaded where a bow requires investment to represent martial/focused training. (Higher APR)
Crossbows in history were peasant weapons that could be easily trained and were deadly but still not as good as a skilled bowman.

true @Prof-Misclick but MAGIC!!

Not worried about "Magic" or not.
Simple vs Martial -

Crossbows in history were noted for making metal armor useuless as it punched through it too. Trying to use irl history to compare to a game doesn't always pan out.

Guys. Not sure why this is getting derailed. Crossbows need to be “better”. Crossbows will not be “better” than bows. Basic NwN simple weapon vs martial. Feel free to contribute to the convo with suggestions of what the crossbows should be.

It is a basic NwN simple weapon, but it also requires a feat investment in the form of rapid reload so you don't shoot only once per round. I think that a good way to make them better is to give them better massive critical rolls/dmg boosts than the bows, since it won't make them better than bows on average, but when the stars align, when a crossbow counts in the battle, it counts.

Bows will be inherently better as they'll always outshines the crossbow in APR.
I would also argue that martial weapon proficiency and even bow proficiency is a lot easier to get than say, exotic weapon proficiency and is therefore not as much as an investment. I'm having trouble thinking of a class that can't use a bow from the get go tbh. Most spellcaster classes I suppose but they don't really have the ab progression to back it up.
If we look at it now, crossbows only do potentially 2 more dmg than bows do, if you take the rapid reload feat. But is immediately outshines once the bowman takes the rapid shot feat which doesn't work on crossbows.
I don't think I'm asking for huge stat boots over bows, just a few extra points of dmg to make their improved dmg output a little more noticeable. Massive crits is probably the best way to go.
Even so I'd just settle for the same stat spread on the grounds crossbows are cool as hell and I'll keep using them anyway.
Ill also settle for nothing at all cause I hate you guys are making me care about crafting at all. Yuck.
