Of Courage and Competence

Maybe I've just been having a really terrible string of luck lately but from what I understand, CoA is supposed to be an adventure server full of dashing people off to slay mighty dragons (or promote them) and do other acts of valor and worldly importance.
Yet all I see are people hiding behind the squishies and running away at the first sign of danger or bumbling into traps and other foolish actions.
Where the hell are the people that know what they're doing and have the gonads to put ass on the line to see a quest through? Where are the people that actually support one another rather than the gaggle of half-wit troglodytes herding a quest through sheer numbers and blind luck?
Am I missing something or were all the PC's struck with Ray of Durr while I was gone? it's seriously dissheartening to loose 4 levels in a single night and then the next day be almost killed 3 times because 60 HP frontliner is standing behind you throwing axes. . .

The people you quest with suck. Quest with better people.
-
All the people are either evil or playing LoL
-
Knowing the incident you point at, I just gotta say that there are people who know mechanics well and those do not. On the other hand some people want to play their characters differently, not always in the most optimal way their character would be against monsters.
I think that such freedom should be allowed for all players. If some character sucks to have around or endangers others, take it IC and give some dashing feedback from their actions, or just not hang around with them anymore :)

You must have been playing during one of the weird time zones with people no one has ever heard of and all the DMs were in bed.

Pardon the sarcasm but I'm gonna go on a guess here and say….. Maybe they're questing?

Although said incident in question did in fact make me infuriated to have to start over at level one, it did open up a nice little storyline of failure to deepen my characters personality. So even though 'the unnamed reckless warrior' did ruin our quest, I'm just going to RP it off and use it to make Landon less boring.

It's always surprising to me that for a game as old as this one, there are still people playing it that haven't really mastered it. I'm by no means good at it, but even I have grasped some of the basic tenets. Perhaps being around awhile has conditioned me to the way it's played here, and there is some metaknowledge that's really difficult to avoid using that helps out. Knowing things like, walk into battle, or even better, stand and let them come to you, copious use of consumables to improve your capabilities, try to have a plan of some kind and know what you are going to do when things go off the rails, and what your role is and how to pull it off.
Most things can be handled fairly well with the tactic of "bash it till it's dead", it's when that won't work when things go badly. I've really only had characters die when things have broken down, and it became a free for all. Going into things with a plan can help stave that off, if you can stick with it.

Sorry Sarah, I'm not playing NWN right now.
-
You need to stop questing with Verkosh imo.
-
What happened to your turtle thingy icon Jasede? I can't see it!
I go by the rule of thumb, if they can't form proper sentences most of the time and my party isn't sufficient enough to support their tomfoolery I don't bring them along. Except Reptile king, hes awesome.
-
It happens. It's good fun to play an outspoken character at a time like that and call out what is obviously the most mechanically powerful character in your party for a coward.
Just avoid questing with them in the future. I'm pretty sure one time when I did this, it went beyond even that and I was told I wouldn't be invited along on any future quests with the guy in question before I could say it first!

We actually have A LOT OF new people to the server, afaik.
But seriously though, I've been trying to get people to not be idiots IC and it gets me shot up, 100% opposed polarity with some characters, and paladins wanting to confront me because of the fairies in their brain told them to despite all evidence. Having a character that might be correct is somehow hard despite the obvious facts concerning survival.
I had an outing involving a fail party and lectured on how you can't rely on healing and to take consumables, etc. Also, I think just picking up any group and just going into it "Hey guys follow me let's go quest" is still a bad idea without trying to figure out what it can do tbh. I even managed to finish the quest without more deaths, huzzah!
I'm seriously debating a Militia application so I can arrest people for the crime of being frickin' idiots. (Inspired by an NPC DM possessed private).
-
Sadly I'm with Erkenbrande. If they can't form a decent sentence and are slow to respond I usually have a low tolerance for them and become more likely to give up.
I make exceptions for Olouth, because he's still fun to hang around.

Play a frontliner cleric of Tyche that wears only robes!
-
Most of the new people here are fantastic both RP and Mechanic-wise. Others are learning, but really, you can't blame it on the new guys. Not totally at least.
-
Where are the people who charge ahead in Squire chains?
Where are they? -
Traded up for some sweet anti-demon gear.

Oi, leave our timezone alone. We make our own fun thankyouverymuch.
