      Although I like the new higher -average- level of around 7, I swear there are far too many lvl 10 people out there these days.

      Anyone else seeing this?

        If the average is 7, there must be some level 10's and above to balance the many level 1-4's that are around.

          I agree. There are a surprising number of level 9's too. I always felt these sort of levels should be so hard to get it was almost a reward for bringing uber amounts of awesome to the community so you'd get looted up/boosted with exp by the dm's to achieve this sort of position of mechanical power.

            Your quite right, yes. I just think there seems to be too many right now. I remember when I first came here, there was one person above lvl 7 on the server, and thats what made me even enter the server.

            Just logged on and there were five lvl 10s online!

              We also have a group of players who consistently do the high level quests. The ones most people cower away from, so yes, there are more level 10s because more players are actually taking risks.

              In the future, there are two simple rules to remember:

                The average level is where we want it at.

                And yes, the word -average- means there'll be people above the average and some below. Such are the maths behind it.

                The current average level is a matter to be discussed amongst DMs, and I frankly don't see how it would be a topic of general interest, other than people stating their opinions on our level range without factual data to back it up.

                    So, when we actually look at the evidence…the current level of the server is still 5.

                    It was 4 before we started raising it.

                    If you note, the paler blue--that's the highest level most characters get--the darker blue is their current level.

                      Increasing numbers of Exploration XP locations factors in too.

                      Low level can't explore effectively, thereby, doesn't collect the exploration xp.

                      After hitting the mid-average ranges, they start being able to do so a lot easier, and certainly hit the more exotic spaces where exploration markers are found.

                      Thus, in many cases, the exploration xp (which doesn't adjust by level) is making up a large piece of those upper levels (Not counting the unique exploration quest, I think total exploration xp out there I know of can get you about 1/3 or 3/8 from 10 to 11).

                      The semi-profuse amount of places where one can run across the giant/ogre bounties that also give xp also kicks in once someone can handle them fairly readily. I never did get CARES to work, so I certainyl understand it being a PITA, but some variance in the tables would both reduce this factor, and freshen things (along with reducing oddball spawns like Mountain Bears and hill Giants in the Kings Forest many miles from hills/mountains)

                          Apocolypticonion, you probably just notice the higher levels and glaze over the low levels. Happens to me too.

                            It goes in cycles too. There's no real secret to getting to higher levels, and folks tend to do it in bunches. A smallish group that quests together, bringing along various outsiders now and again, can gain higher levels, making it seem as the server levels going up, when it's only a portion that's on at the same time.

                                I somehow get a feeling something like this might not be too far away. Even tho it often hurts the mid-levels more, due to mechanical reasons.

                                  Actually, this is likely an important factor if you consider Moloch's earlier post: higher-lvl characters tend to reach their position in bunches, which means the "instant" level spread of the server, which is what players see on login, varies according to TZ.
                                  I suppose the graph was counting PCs both active and living?

                                      I guess the only thing I'd say regarding this is that, while the numbers do not lie, there does seem to be a kind of "instantaneous" growth to high levels, at least currently. As it's been said, it seems to come in waves due to the player "bunches". The only thing I don't like is seeing how -fast- they go from say, level 5 to level 9.

                                      It mostly comes down to a personal "I want to do this with my time" outlook for the server. I'm not bashing people who are high levels that go do risky quests, I think they are fun, too. However, I think a bit of moderation and scrutiny on a personal level would go a long way.

                                      One other thing I'd say to consider is that "with great power comes great responsibility" idea. If you're going to attain that high of a level, I'd say make sure you can handle the responsibilities of interacting and respecting the fun time of lower level players - namely in dealing with PvP and intimidating RP. Use your mechanical power, sure, but use it wisely.

                                          I don't think you should worry to much about intimidating rp based on levels. From an RP standpoint, wit and character popularity mean so much more then level 10, and the worst thing that can happen is you loose. From a mechanical standpoint, people who level fast tend to focus on PvAI, as opposed to pvp, and will often loose to characters two or three levels less then they are when its time to throw down.

                                          Honestly, as someone who reached level 8 with his character for the first time ever on my last one, I like the current averages. People who want to get to high levels will anyways (see macca at level 11 with two bad rp tokens), so making it easier to get to a higher level only helps those who were stuck constantly doing the fey quest back in the day.
