No longer Low-Level Friendly?
-
To date, I've not been able to get a character above level 6 unless I was part of a DM supported group or faction in months. For some reason even when the sever is full I've tried making sendings and waiting for sendings for hours and there are very few scripted quests being done. I'd say I'm just in a bad play time, however, I've tried all day sometimes on my days off with only one or two quests completed in a 24 hour period. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is the sever just not interested in scripted quests anymore? Its getting really disheartening and de-motivating to log in wanting to have fun and waste hours sitting around doing nothing and getting nothing accomplished RP or quest wise. Whats going on?

i am guessing that generally PCs now spend so little time below level 4 now that it is hard to find appropriate quest buddies for those low level things, a combination of increased xp and the tendancy to quest train to get to the level that things start to level out.
I have seen myself what you mean, i have logged in and the only other lowbies have done all the lowbie quests already!
-
Its starting to get rather redonculous because I can't seem to make it out of the 1-5 zone so that I can have more fun doing other things. I've also noticed that for some reason the spawns on the low level quests seem harder than usual but that might just be me.

The server's character levels are definately escalated now and days…lvls 6 and 7 are not really longer the averages, they are the majority.
-
1-3 quests are hard to get going.. but a lot of them can 1-2 maned by subpar builds anyway. However alot of leveling once you leave the safe 1-5 quests is heavily dependent on support. Case in point, my current character Anctus spent a age at 7 with something like one 3-7 every two days… then some decent allied tanks showed up and he's now close enough to 9 despite being hit nearly all the way back to 7 at one point because he can sneak in a few decent quests per day.

It doesn't need to be DM supported, but this server has always been much easier if you are part of a faction.
-
It has…?
Maybe you're just not doing it right, chaps.
I'm not a member of a DM faction. I've never been one (albeit briefly), and have always managed to top 8 or 9.
If you want high levels with a great RP-centric character, play it safe in battle, I'm sure you can think of a few ways to that.

Make an IMP expertise fighter imho.

Stop shooting that crossbow

Mage's are pretty easy to keep alive really…. assuming your not a con 8 elf who charges things with his longsword. If you want any tips, ask Anctus IC for rp funs!

You die too much, thats the problem. Some people are decent with playing and not dieing, others arn't. I noticed during my time with Vincent that well, you die often. Maybe get someone to teach you IC how to play well and not die! :P

I used to have a similar problem with my wizard and druid characters until I was given several OOC pointers how to survive with a caster class. I used to play in a straight-forward manner (i.e. dying) until I was shown the different strategies with the mechanics and consumables. It helped alot, but I still suck at PvP…

I need this kind of help with any fighting class. I have fun playing of course, but I do spend a bit of time in the fugue. Casters and rogues? No problem. Put me at the wheel behind a front liner, and I'm spattered noobsauce.

Potions man. People go about wasting thier gold on loot. Everyone knows potions are the way forward!
-
My advice when playing a tank? Stock up on at least one potion of each kind before each massive adventure/serious quest before going out. The standard kit includes Barkskin, Shielding, Insulation, Blur if you think it will be swarm-intensive, and a full rack of appropriate healing. People doubt the importance of potions, but as Jagged pointed out to me:
A wand takes a full action to activate. A potion takes half an action. You can technically drink two potions while someone else uses a wand charge. Double that if you drink Haste first.
Be mindful of your consumable intake, too. If you can skirt by ending the quest at injured, go ahead and do so. Taking a bath is free, and inns are cheap.
Also, don't doubt the power of a healing kit with a high healing skill. A +3 healing kit with a 10 Heal Skill at Levels 1-7 will almost always give you a -full heal-. Those things cost 33 coins.
Sell what you can, and don't pack-rat too much stuff. Trust me, you don't -actually- want to hold onto that 1 use Ray of Enfeeblement for that glorious PvP you'll have in…five months. It bogs up your pack.
Travel in groups or at least pairs when you go into the wilds. They are dangerous and are not meant for solo travel unless you are have 1) easy access to invisibility or 2) epic animal empathy.
That's all I can think of for right now.

The average server level seems to wax and wane like the tide only at a much longer interval. Upon returning from a long absence the average server level seemed quite low for many months. Now its climbing. Soon there will be a massive war or some such and the cycle will start over.
Older wiser players told me the secret to getting to high lvl. It's simple, as Eliphas said."Don't Die!". Very small changes in strategy can pay off in the long haul.
Forget about you low level plebs for a while and feel the pain of us uber high lvls! (All two of us.) :P We need sympathy too.

I just want to clarify that my latest few posts are not a bash or hate at the sever at all. I love the sever and can't seem to find one I like better than this one. They are simply me expressing my current frustration and looking for some advice to get back into the fun. On that note, thanks for some of the great suggestions and I think I might work on a concept that works with the current atmosphere while still being fun. That probably means making a concept that's tailored just to create fun for others rather than build on a personal goal but I don't mind as long as I'm having fun with other players. I'm just sick of sitting by myself in the inn trying to do scripted quests, maybe its time for me to just say screw the levels, screw the loot, and just get out there and create drama to be solved ^_^

This is pretty much exactly what I did. I thought about a character and actually started from the concept of getting away with the least amount of equipment I could and focusing on how I could do something unusual that would push me way out of my comfort zone. Oddly enough, I came up with a character who doesn't use weapons or armor and pretty much has to rely on her wits and charisma to get her through. Now, give her a goal (or a few) and wind it up, see what flies.
It's only been about 12 hours actual IG time but I've been enjoying it for the most part. Even got to see some really cool/dangerous stuff and since I -have- no weapons or equipment, I survived because I played it fairly smart. (And had great guides ;) )
It makes a big difference when you realize just how squishy you are. :)

Any build is viable in CoA (as Olouth or Neolithic will tell you) if you have good knowledge of consumables and spell workings, but that takes time to learn.
My first wizard hovered around level 4 for the six months I played him. I saw wizards with 6 con racking up levels like no tomorrow. Annoying, but like everything else, it takes practice. I played only fighters after that for a year before I built my second wizard, and he was a bit better at living.
Ultimately when you're neck-deep in stories and plots you'll find none of it matters, but it's totally understandable you want a decent level to at least explore the more dangerous parts of the server and not die to a rat, so try a sturdy build (like heavy armor / shield for instance). It might be less frustrating. Finding friends in game who can teach you how to survive (which is what I did) is of course the best way to go about it.
