Why do Red Harts use Ranged Weapons? They're just plain nuts
-
The original question posed here is probably a good IC discussion to be had in game, rather than OOC. Along with such things as spell use, siege weapons, etc.
I have had only a few people actively try to discuss the chivalric code with my character in game(who weren't trying to join the faction). Even then, the questions were mostly revolving around the hunting traditions.
I'll have to agree here. I encourage discussion of the Redhart code IC. I don't know how things are now, but back when I was in the Redhart, many of the newer recruits or Errants still didn't know the full code or still needed clarification on a few of them.

I don't remember having used a ranged weapon with Golin and i think Balin had a few throwing axes. Never felt the need to have a bow with the Forkbeard and had no issue in reaching lvl 8.
Why would a knight use a bow when he can chop eb0l with his holy avenger sword?
-
Ive had three fighters that didn't use ranged weapons all got to level 8 without an issue one got to 10.
Alittle luck and it's not difficult you only need ranged weapons when you can't cut, slash and hack your way to them like if there are on a ridge with no way up. -
I've hit those situations before

OR WTF Falcon Punch Smite them! {renaactment of redknight vs demon baby}

I have a bow…. I only really ever use it when I can't physicaly get to the location of what I want to smack.

My 2 cents:
This is a magical world and shouldn't be compared real life. Where in real life bows/ranged and such was the way we must remember this is a magical world where a warrior could probably scale a wall with magical enchanements, where you can have skins and potions/magic that aid against arrows, and so on - could give so many different examples.
Then of course you have the different gods, who want their followers to do certain things, which all in turn give D&D its unique flavour.
-
I would give examples of Sir William, Sir Leo, and Dame Melina's exploits and how they did the "impossible" but those are stories for another time. Yes, there are times where bows would come in handy. Shooting down archers on ledges, especially ones that spawn on impossible to reach areas, or perhaps when people hide behind barricades and such. But it's all a part of being a Knight, finding ways to complete your goals even though you have certain rules to follow.

There is so much more to the Red Hart, their code and why they behave how than do that none outside a handful even know. As with any organization, not everyone sees things in the exact same way, some place higher priority on certain parts of the codes then others, and some are on the fringe of the code that they are hardly understood by the order at large.
I would strong suggest that this be all sorted out ICly either within the faction or outside it. Believe me, it's well worth the effort.
Cheers
P.S. Still, to date, no other faction has been more enjoyable for me during the entire time on the server. Give it a try!

my malarite ranger managed to get to level 9 using only a scimitar/large shield and breastplate, front lining all the way in quests too.
Within the mechanics the only time you cant manage is if the opponent is physically impossible to get to, if you can hit them then you can buff up to a state where you can win!

Historicly ranged weapons ARE the future, and military mind would agree.
The Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo when his musketry wasn't having the desired effect or range said "give me a batallion of English longbowmen and they would decimate the French"
-
I die less as a Red Hart and no bow than I do with other characters with no holds barred. It amazes me there is three pages of discussion over this. It is just a differnt way of fighting, and usualy is not the hardest obstical to get around. Least no one is ragequiting in this post and everyone seems to be behaving. :)

I think this fits under "Your doing it wrong" mentality. My suggestion is to keep it IC. If your character thinks a RH needs to put down the bow and charge headlong into battle, telling them IC is going to be far more useful.

In RL ranged weapons are the future because they ll one shot kill you. In NWN their damage output is laughable, unless the character is a dedicated bow user, so a melee focused character with a good magic blade wouldn't use a plain bow (good bows are rare in the module as far as I know) instead.
FR is a place where bowmen are moving targets for meleers. (Unless you are a monk/wiz/ arcane archer or something)
Easy access to quality arrows does help, but then again very few people will make a bow based character. If they make a fighter, they ll do it to be a tank mostly, if they make a ranger, they don't have the feats to really specialize, and finally rogues do not need specializing due to sneak attacks. Rogues do not have the big range benefit anyway due to their need to sneak attack.
Since the discussion is about the Red Harts though, I do not understand why is it such a big deal that their oaths prevents them from using bows, especially when mechanically it's not that big a deal. Why is it not an issue for Malarites? It is just their moral code. Yes, they are militaristic faction who should be all about strategic combat, but in FR apparently bowmanship is not that important, unlike RL. I do not know why those elves brag about it even…
Now off to make that fighter/rogue archer I always wanted...elf probably...
-
It is certainly more about having equal possibilities of killing or ding, the difference being the skill that matters moraly.
Really, it is a moral choice on how they warfare. And why is this discussion happening so many years after they came to Arabel?

Because I paid fo an arugment the full round!

A Hart can use an throwing axe to bring an enemy to bare, if their are being cowardly in the way they are being attacked. I always use to carry 10-20 +1 throwing axes, as a reminder of the Code. (RP)
The Knights use the Stag Watchmen as Bowmen in Large battles, so to not break their code.
The Knightly Order is about their code and why change it .. really. It adds many good RP opportunities due to the Code and Oaths the Knight taken.
-
I really see no problem in roleplaying a Knight that struggles to adhere to his credo due to the shades of grey in the server.
-
It reminds me of Sir Arthur Wilson controller of the navy in the early 20th century saying of submarines that they were "underhand, unfair, and damned un-English" and that all captured submarine crews should be hanged as pirates.
A code doesn't always make strategic sense and sometimes it goes contrary to it but sticking to that code is what makes you the more honourable combatant which is what I think the Red Harts are about.
