Bring back more "badass-ery" to CoA

All in all there are challenges if someone wants to look for them. Why should the whole serve get to the difficulty level apprpriate to the better players's (mechanically) standards?
Thank you. This says it all.

I'm certain there are some harder quests out there. I can see how some of those quests which are a huge challenge are being missed though. We did think the orc sewers quest was great, it just had vast numbers of scripts attached to it which we couldn't have clogging up the module. Maybe we will see something similar in future - I don't really build quests at all so can't say.
@Il:
Wooden spears and clubs aren't rag tag if they are more powerful than regular weapons, and more readily available. I don't really understand that comment at all!
It's for the roleplay value. You wouldn't see say, peasant levies with golden fullplate and ornate mithril swords. You shouldn't really see starting adventurers (who are not nobles) with the same thing. As you say, they are readily availible, just as they should be. Getting hold of a spear or club should be immensely easy, whereas a custom suit of full plate armor shouldn't.

@Khamal:
Besides there still are some challenging quests, the journal one is still around but noone does it. I mean there is still challenge I think, so those who miss the thrill can do some of the more dangerous quests. I am talking about specific quests only to show they actually exist I don't mean to offend anyone.All in all there are challenges if someone wants to look for them. Why should the whole serve get to the difficulty level apprpriate to the better players's (mechanically) standards?
To be fair those more challenging quests are not many at all, a few more could be added, but if DMs see that noone does the few existing ones, why would they ever spend valuable time for a few quests possibly as rarely done by groups?
A million times this, this, this.
Start doing the real 7-12 quests such as Frosties, Slums, Pilgrims (if it was working) instead of spamming Scholars. Mertoi will kick your ass, and Bresk and Notebook will also make Foogoo soup out of you. Go explore the Underdark molten caves and watch as the greater volcano spirits turn you into a puddle while the gith warriors cook you with a hundred fireballs. Go play Dead Magic Zone or wander the South hunting rift creatures.
Whatever. If you think wandering to Zhent Keep and back gives you the right to say the server is "too easy" than you haven't seen anything.
Are you serious? I just told you i've done every single quest this server has and more than once and played some of the most looted out hardcore powerbuilds on the server. (that isn't bragging, it simply wasn't fun). You're going around throwing shitstorms at me personally for saying my opinion based on what i've seen and experienced since i returned?
I think i'm done answering your posts while you seem to insist on personal attacks.

Deadlock: - As interesting as that concept / idea is I doubt many see it that way. I know when I first saw it I thought ''Sweet, +1d4 extra damage bolts and arrows that are really cheap!'' and I doubt I'm the only one.
Maybe if they had some fire related negatives attached it might make it more interesting. I was going to make a suggestion about it actually, but I never did.
And Khamal, I'm one of the people who is terrible at the mechanics side of CoA and I've never, ever felt in any danger on a quest until I did the Chess quest last night. That one was a bugger!
-
Chill out, guys. Keep the thread civil.

@Sharran2:

Apologies. That comment was not directed at you at all. I have edited it out to avoid confusion (and DM spankings…)

CoA: So easy a caveman can do it.
(and like 90% of the playerbase are cavemen right?)
I dunno if I should bother putting my 2 cents into making this a serious discussion or not. We went through this all summer with Slime Cult ™. It really seems moot. When people bring something different to the flow of the server that purposely conflicts with another character from day one, its all taboo seemingly. Lucklyfor me, I could care less of people's feelings of that, and still make it hard (but still fair) for all the people I purposely oppose. Thats the way to go!

@Il:
…I've never, ever felt in any danger on a quest until I did the Chess quest last night. That one was a bugger!
Chess? Principe! That's the easiest quest out, except for Froidoc's Bats!
My point?
What is easy one day for party A, is a Total Party Wipe for party B tomorrow.
People are getting better at playing this game. They're becoming more savvy. Some are excelent at builing a character that is mechanically sound for the style of play they enjoy. Others Rolepay their nerfed character and extract a great deal of joy out of doing that. Our job as players and DMs is to ensure that we enjoy what we do and we help others enjoy it as well.

It was the first time I've finished the quest in the last 4 years, I was pretty pleased! >_>

I rather do enjoy these threads. So many views and positions. Is the server too easy? In some aspects, yes. If you know what you are doing, what potions to use, when to use them and such. It's fairly simple to get to mid-to-high level with nearly any class or build. Is the sever still hard? Again, yes, in some aspects. There are quests out there that can be murderous to even well geared parties. Can you make it more difficult on yourself? Certainly. You can make a gimped out build that would struggle to live against bats. Would that make things more fun? For some, maybe that's the answer. To me, that's not fun, so I don't do it. I find some things very easy, and do like to make it to above average levels, so I tend to play what could be called (generously) effective builds. (not min-maxed, but certainly far from gimped). I find it enjoyable to have a mechanical level of power, so that's what I do. Others have little care for that, and go another way.
A certain level of strength has been deemed to be the goal of the server, and it's been geared to allow nearly all to reach that point. It is debatable if that level is too high or too low. For myself, I don't long for the days when it took me actual years to reach level 9/10. (although it should be stated that it was more a choice on my part to not quest often that mostly caused it, so that's not really a reflection on the server itself) You see ebbs and flows of characters reaching higher levels, mostly due to a few groups sticking together, questing successfully, gathering dm attention and the like. A few (myself) will tag a long and get to high level. Others seem to struggle to get out of the midlevels.
-
I do think CoA could use a bit more badness, but I realize not everyone wants the difficulty level spiked so hopefully a middle ground can be found for those who want more of a challenge while not alienating the other half who may not like dying every other time.

I must be doing something very wrong I havent passed lvl 6 in all 2011.

I like turtles.

I must be doing something very wrong I havent passed lvl 6 in all 2011.
I empathize. Lvl 7 is an instant ticket to Fuge for me. Never lasted more than a day at 7.
:(
And I like Duck better than I like turtles <3
-
I made it to level 9 twice. They never lasted longer than a week. Once was in V3, and once was in V4. I have never, not once had a levul tin character.
Just sort of analyzing my level gain in hindsight, I found it harder to level in previous versions. I also found it harder to earn gold. Two of my previous characters in V4 were filthy rich at more than one point in their lives.
What does this mean? To me, it means the server has, in fact, become "easier."
Is it a bad thing? I'm not really sure. I mean, I still enjoy it, so long as the powergamers stay away from me and let me RP.
Again, this is simply an observation and not a solution.
tl;dr,
Screw your ducks and your turtles. I liek caek. -
@Deadlock:
I do think CoA could use a bit more badness
no khamal fulfills the bad quota
wut. ubad trollzez.

i have made signifigant levels with both my characters..but i have found it actually challenging
there are a lot of creatures now that can pick you out when you are invisible and in full stealth..nearly did not escape from a encounter today
we have to remember it is a game, and some people master them better than others can, i do not know what the answer is, but i would hate to see it swing too far the other way, concidering some have not figured out to win…i have figured out a formula which works for me, but that does not mean i find the game easy, to the contrairy, i am still terrified in many areas and am quick to flee at the drop of a hat

I don't think the server needs to be more challenging. Despite what's been posted, v2 was more or less desolate of magical items. Only a handful of PC favorites ever got magical items, while the rest of the populace (probably 30x bigger than the current), only ever found the handful of scripted +1 drops (breastplate, warhammer, shortsword, and another couple). v3 and v4 introduced higher magic levels, and much more opportunity for anyone to be rewarded with magical gear.
For the record, a +1 item is fairly worthless as it can be emulated by a level 1 spell. As far as power levels go, a +1 AB, +Damage (not a true +1) item is more powerful, since you can still enchant it with a level 1 spell thus granting +2 to hit and damage. I'm off topic though.
I disagree with the lobbying to make the server harder. The game is dying, the server is dying, making it easier or harder wouldn't really have much effect either way, but I have more fun when I'm level 7+, and my characters feel more complete when they have all manner of potions and wands, and magical weapons and other gadgets.
If the scripted side of the server is easier, and the ability to find magical equipment (consumables mostly) is easier, you will have players more interested in pursuing plots than powergaming (which isn't really a sin any more anyway).
Let the focus stay on plots, plenty of players die on those anyway, which is much more hardcore.
-
+1 AB will not stack with +1 enhance, it always uses whatever gives the higher AB
Also if you play a broken class in D&D (wizard or cleric) you will find the game very easy regardless of difficulty, those classes are just that good
All the servers that are like how CoA was in the "good ol days" are either dead or dying. The servers that are less strict are the only ones that are doing well.
