Making poor IC descions
-
One thing that I have been considering is the affect on the server when DM and player factions strive to "Win" in all their decisions.
With the more powerful factions, I've been wondering if it is right, from an OOC, point of view to allow your character to make a poor decision IC that may lead to a loss in game for your faction, but a gain for the server as a whole. The decision still has to make sense for your character, of course. It's like the equivalent of a "good" character refusing the help of an "evil" character and thus failing the quest. Such a decision is not sensible from an XP/gold progression point of view, but, if played correctly, gains in roleplay which is what we're here for.
So, a player might allow his character to make a decision he knows will cause a loss for his faction, but a gain overall for the server.
Discuss.

Don't worry. Players and characters have been making bad decisions ever since Caern's first set of letters spurred the current events. Many of those bad decisions have been pure win for the server- at least from my opinion.

Yes, even players thinking they're making good decisions are often really the BAD decision. I think the most recent was to have fifty people attack the Shadovar empire by themselves.
Players can just make decisions that are in character for their characters, NPCs will often try to point out when a decision isn't just bad but is ignoring reality (like when the NPCs pointed out that 50 people can't defeat an empire of 100,000+). But when its just a bad decision that will make awesome for the server, we love to let it go through and then people can complain and we can respond –but it was player motivated!

Sometimes we make decisions which we THINK are good ones at the time, and then later we realize they were REALLY BAD decisions, and have to live with (or die from) the IC consequences. It's not a conscious choice to make a "bad" decision, it just ends up that way, sometimes.

I belive the question was about making a decision that from an OOC standpoint you know will end terribly, but it's just too IC for your character.
Well, it's really what RPGs are about - making decisions of your character, not yours. We sometimes forget this. The most classical example is the "last stand" - you know you won't survive, but it's just something your character will do, as retreat's not an option.

Prime Example: West Coltern.
To West, all the decisions he made were for the greater good in his eyes. Yeah look where that ended him? Burnt to a crisp yum yum. It's all about having most of your mind in your PC and just a tad bit outside on the OOC for me. That is just me though. I have never "Strived to win CoA" If I did I would probably learn how to actually play a powerbuild :D. To be honest, I try to find a PC that will be remembered and fun. I have had PC's that helped lead a resistance against Bhaliir. I have had PC's drink slime to become a super mutant man. There are some PC's people will hear and say "Oh yeah he was fun, he stayed true to his personality." or even ones where people say 'Oh god he was so annoying." That is what I see as being good for the server. But that's just me. I honestly don't think making a decision for the good of the server is really possible. It needs to be good for your character and that would in turn make it good for the server. 2 Cents

Discuss.I don't give a rat's ass either way. My character does what they would do, based on what they desire/know and the ramificatons they know about and/or care about and whether they think it's ok or worth it…
no matter what I as a player think or know.Example:
letting a character who was one of the prophesied saviors get morally tainted by a evil cleric because the evil cleric pretended to take her seriously when she felt her dozen sworn protectors patted her head and said "dont worry, just stand behind us and look pretty, we'll take care of things, you dont have to know the details".it was terrible for the "faction".
It would be terrible for the "server" if it continued.
but it's what the character would do. -
I admit I don't really give a shit about the large events and how anything I do affect it. I involve my characters the way they would do it. Period. Everyone here only think of winning and their legacy as a player and whatever. We need more pure balls and personalities and less focus on win. It ruins the good RP.

Q.F.T.
This was one of the reasons why I took a hiatus from the server. Everyone became far to busy with PLOTS and Politics and "MUST WIN CoA!" that it really took a toll on the RP and "fun" factor of the server. But that's just me. Apparently the majority of the community enjoy that, and the DMs have done a fantastic job building a world and nurturing that kind of environment. I just got overwhelmed by it, that's all.

I pretty much make bad decisions all the time, so I have no idea where I stand on this topic.
-
i think my decisions record can be summed up in one word..

Our characters are supposed to have flaws. Play those, and they will lead to poor decisions. taking poor decisions for the sake of creating something interesting feels, to me, ooc, and thus takes away the interest in what has been created.
