The "I don't need it, you can have it" way of thin
-
I'd just like to say that I am pleased more and more groups I end up with do not think about "I will grab the best stuff, because it sells well", but hand it over to people who might actually need it. There are still conflicts of course, over the more prestigeous "Event Loot", but most of the time I am pleased people do not spend a few hours to debate over who takes the +1 Intelligence ring, in a group of five fighters and one mage. Warms me heart, really.

I've noticed the same thing actually and feel the same. It gives a much better 'around the table' feeling to some parties.
-
I totally agree. It seems to be more of "Hey, I could use X- can I have it, or does someone want to roll about it with me?" than "All righty, let's roll. Highest grabs the expensive stuff".
My opinion might be biased, but I've also seen more charity than before - "Oh, new adventurer. Here, take this +1 dmg sword and other stuff that I don't really need." -kind of charity.
-
I don't do this, I never will.
Give me all your expensive shit!

A very good rule of thumb my dad taught me back when he was a kid and was playing v.1 D&D. Teamwork: If someone else can put an item to better use, give it to them. Don't let the fighter take the intel boosting ring, and don't let the wizard or sorcerer take the +1 longswords. D;

I think this is, in part, due to either A), the magic level of the server going up a bit, or B) DM's being more generous on both scripted and non scripted quests, so better loot is becomeing 'redundant' to higher levels.
Nothing wrong with either scenario, though.

Or perhaps people are getting older, and realizing that at the end of the day, it is just a game. It is rare you see the hizzy fits on irc, when you die and lose everything in a crash. Ahem, sorry for that by the way.
I like the magical lvl as it is now. More interesting, and the enemy is much stronger now too.

On a related note, I just went on a quest where everybody who could heal was healing each other whenever anyone slipped below "Barely Injured". It's not always the case, so it was good to see. Players were also waiting for anyone who fell behind (including a player who had connection trouble).
Although roleplay wasn't as strong as it could have been, it was still much preferable to some of the quests I've been on where everyone was obviously only thinking about themselves (and still with limited RP). I know sometimes that's an IC thing, but I've been on quests where "good" characters seemed more intent on XP and loot than actually taking care of their companions, so…thumbs up to those players.

Lets all hold hands and sing Kumbaya!

Marin's a Merchant. Her ethos and drivers are for making coin from selling loot found. Even so, I will still promote and check whether there is someone who will actually make use off an item before taking and trading it.

Kumbaya is a very offensive word in Rashemi. How dare you.
-
The characters I tend to play have a strong ethos of division of resources based on need, and not personal property ("Sharing" as Merin calls it), so they tend to get very annoyed ICly if it's not done that way.
OOCly, taking items when obviously somebody else can make a world's better use of it is one of my (many) rage-buttons. I've seen it happen so many times, and it just leaves a quest or encounter on an unpleasant tone for me. I'm glad to see some more OOC courtesy is being given with this kind of thing.

Actually if I remember D&D was (in)famous for the gold/loot - driven experience system :D. But we still somewhat managed to distribute it evenly.
-
Actually, if you read the Player's Handbook carefully, it explains that in the non-written rules of Adventuring, that's exactly how loot should be distributed.
Just people were not doing it because loot was scarce before we changed the treasure system and started handing out more loot.
-
There has been a loot change? I hadn't noticed it.. But it is good people are being more OOCly conciderate and such.

good or evil character, i try to avoid taking things from quests unless it is obvious i should have it (has not happened yet, so that has not been a issue)
i will take my share of the gold now, making wands is the main reason i will go on quests now, it is a vicious cycle, i quest, burn through healing wands, get gold make more healing wands then repeat the cycle, so far it has been a lot of fun and i am starting to quest more than i have ever done in the past, though rping on quests is a bit hard, stopping to emote or say something when you are with a group that is trying to do something leaves a person way behind at times
items i usually get outside of quests when people give things to me or when i purchase them if i am hunting for a specific item
a character should not be defined by their items, a character should be able to stand on their own without them, afterall, the lag and crash monsters can and will eventually feed on everyone who is on the server
