A few thoughts

@joekickass A from-the-bottom concept has everything to do with being an underdog in a setting that is not currently conducive to it. Just as much as someone with more reactionary views would be an underdog in a setting where a revolution has already taken place.
You've got to strike while the iron is hot, or make the iron hot by striking. And that latter one is hard to do but much more rewarding. The Banites did NOT walk into this game being accepted with open arms, they made everything they have themselves. There's no reason you can't do the same.
But you're not gonna start with the support, no one does unless they start playing a character who is loyal to someone who ALREADY HAS POWER.

Let's try to keep this civil with out insulting each other, the concepts we like, or how we play the game.
Not an official DM anymore, but come on. Play nice - don't make me dust off my hammer.

@smilingdog Ilmater will still kick ass if pressed. Now ELDATH on the other hand...

Let's make sure we're all positive. I'm seeing a few posts here that are borderline insulting someone else's playstyle and we are not going to do that because the goal is fun for everyone. In fact, one reason I am reading this thread is because I do want any playstyle (even if you want to play in your face necromancer) seem/feel more viable when we get to v6.

come I am a nice guy, really.
I raise people who want to kill me even if it doesn't make sense, heal people who want to kill me, look the other way as people plot my demise. Alright so it would be super boring if I didn't have anyone plotting my demise or trying to kill me, fair.
But really, I invite anyone who wants to play something evil to come roll with the Banites as we will accept almost anything as a mercenary even if you just want to use us as a springboard to get enough levels and loot to move your own concept.

As you can see, @Mr-Moloch quoted me. It is because I've very important and he is in love with me.

@smilingdog I'm not singling anyone out. I've just seen a few posts that I had to read twice to make sure they were alright because people are pushing the line between just being negative and being outright toxic.

Rofl. @SmilingDog is just misunderstood. I know him in real life and he just talks really weird. It doesn't translate well through text, but he DEFINITELY is not hostile ever. He's a total bitch. ;)

If you try to please everybody you please nobody, that's life.

It's still the point we lost a player, and it's fairly clear to me why we lost a player. I think you can either accept reality of why that is the case: try and tweak the setting to fix it or just accept it and give fair warning to players.
Not quite. I'm still talking to the OP through PMs. :)

I wasn't expecting so many replies to this thread to he honest.
Thanks to everyone who chimmed in and offered their take.@King-Dobby , regarding your post. This exactly portrays my main problem.
As blunt as that might sound, i am not here to be your player DM. I don't play for your sole enjoyment. I'm not a DM event and my necromancer is not a concept that i thought of in 10 minutes. I want to enjoy my time playing evil as much as you do playing whatever you like to play. As for power, i am most certain a paladin can single handedly eat my undead for breakfast, let's not kid ourselves here.I've been nagged by a lot of people over the years to play Good. I tried, i don't like it. The worst i can come up with is neutral something. Does this mean i have to be FD'ed every week because you want to have fun? I'm not your personal DM.
Concerning chaotic. My favourite flavour is lawful evil and neutral evil. My lawful evil people still override the law sometimes or a lot of the times even. I portrayed that with my paladin that just sucked every single bloodstone she had on her person to complete her task.
Duty, be it divine or otherwise and moral code can override law, it's still lawful behaviour in my eyes, because lawful doesn't necessarily means devotion to law but to live by some code and die for it. Would my paladin offend every law in existence to save Bhalir's life in an assasination attempt? Yes she would.
I can't think of a samurai that would have their hands tied because Cormyr's law prohibited the use of katanas unless their Lord which they served under prohibited their use or something. Anyway...
My most known character in CoA was Scylla Wyrmshield, a fighter / sorc and Tiamat devotee who was with Axeris's crew who was ultimatetly betrayed to the Ecclestian Order by her boyfriend :p Honestly it was the most fun character i ever played anywhere and yes, she was kinda in your face evil (lasted around 1 month along with Axeris)
I'm still very proud that i've got to RP her and she earned me several "accolades" to the hall of fame. I still remember all the people who sent me "good show, good RP" during the execution.
So again. Don't you think i deserve to have fun too? I just don't want to get FD'ed every week and have someone to RP and quest with.
Anyway, my main points are.
I don't want to be bored, but it's ok if everyone hates me and wants to kill me at some point. But don't make that point a single encounter and immediate execution. Find some excuses to give me RP. Honestly i ever only FD'ed 1 person while in CoA and i was playing pure evil all the time. And that was by mistake lol.I'm here to have as much fun as you that you play your lawful good paladin swinging rainbow coloured swords. Please note i said fun, not IC acceptance or power.

Necro cleric is one of the strongest things I’ve ever played on CoA Red Rose, so the issue definitely isn’t in the power of the animates.
Unfortunately, the setting of Arabel can’t possibly cater to every type of playstyle... or at least not in a way we might hope.
-
If someone's FD'ing your character too soon, talk to a DM. It sounds off to me.
If someone FD's another char for using a bloodstone they'll probably be put in the Penal Legion. There's a LOT of protections for evil characters from Good as well. A lawful evil guy can use this to their advantage.
It does help if you play smart, but even if you don't you shouldn't find yourself being FD'd for anything less than trying to FD someone else, and talk to a DM if that isn't the case.
And yes, Animate Dead is VERY powerful in CoA once you figure out some reagents to use with the spell. Easily the best "pet" ability in the game.
-
That definitely seems like something to talk to a DM about, if you feel like you got FD'd too soon. The DMs can and do veto bullshit PKs, so far as I know.
This has been updated recently, and I feel is pretty much bang-on in line with what you want. So... If something's happened that's not in line with these rules, report it.
ETA: Like for real, there are lines in there about making sure PVP is fun, not PKing on a first encounter, giving people outs, etc. Not sure how long those lines have been in there, but they're in there now so folks'll hopefully fall in line with them pretty chop-chop.
-
Now, again, it has been a long time, and I really just breezed through the opening area.
Wasn't there on the Caravan to Arabel location a blurb about the difficulties of playing Evil on the server? Or am I completely making that up in my brain box.
-
As a new player I can attest to evil concepts being difficult to play, where there is almost an OOC hatred for evil. I have seen alot of people play "soft evil" (see House Bhaliir, Banite Cohort) but if your looking to go full on necromancer or some such you will most likely live a short and brutal life. Part of this is just the fact the server is based in Cormyr, which is overwhelmingly good. I would say the best way to help out team evil is when team good rolls into Old Town the NPCs come to the rescue.
-
One day I'm going to play a friendly neighborhood Necromancer who is super upbeat and positive.
Arabel has Lawful tendencies. It is really structured for goodly aligned PCs. But I've seen some Evil aligned PCs have some really, really, strong boons given to them by DMs. I think that if I ever truly went with Team Evil I'd play a really conservative behind the scenes manipulator sort of PC, or like some have stated before, those "bright burning" short lived evil PCs that have a short shelf life.
Honestly, I think the way to go would be to have Arabel shift away from being so lawful by bringing in a more dubious leader, organization, etc.. Hell, having a Lawful Evil Warden of the North would be awesome. Someone even shadier than Hardcastle himself!
-
Frankly, the idea of a more chaotic setting is a disquieting one. To me, more Chaotic means more PVP. CoA's already got a tetchy balance of PVP-vs-stuff-Syrus-actually-likes-to-do as it is. (Much better of late, mind you.)
-
We want PvP; not though lots of PKing. I like the idea of PCs competing against each other, even brawling/fighting, I just think PKing should be rare and the culmination of big huge complex situations.
-
I can picture it right now. A necromancer that makes moo jokes, calls everyone luv and has a host of undead cows. You know what i mean lol :p
Either way. On that, i tried several times to play an "ethical" necromancer. But it never worked. One of my dreams is to see my necromancer defending a city from a host of orcs or insert random other enemy here with their undead army.
