I have run in to groups that were demanding gold, they were back a ways from the transition and let me know I had to pay to pass, in that case it was easy, turn around and go back
But after attempting some rp, which they no doubt found annoying
A few times I have been chased out, not by the same person of course and over a protracted period of time
I do notstay in as long as I once did and I am finding sometimes the frequency of my visits are dropping
I had given a very self serving suggestion, which if instituted would have given me reason to get back into a gathering resources routine then converting those into in game friendships with new characters

My needs for fun
A small but steady reliable source of gold for stays at the inns and making sendings
Also a source that can be utilized to refurbish the cure wands I try to employ on quests and explorations, I have a set level i try to have or get to, otherwise I do not quest or explore with others
Selling surplus items from the charity chest is a pretty slow way of gaining gold
Sendings are out of the question too costly, I need that gold for inns now to renew expended spells

How can you say this? I have NEVER in my CoA lifespan had trouble travelling the server. I don't know any players that stalk the entrance either….
I wish I could agree with you
But in my time on arabel I have seen this
Thankfully less now. But we have fewer people today. And granted some of those events were perpetuated by grieveds

If people are being dicks, then infomr DMs about teh behaviour with screenshots and or logs.
Also, there are already ways to avoid old town and leave the citadel.
But we will probly put in another more obvious one.

Players can help too. If a casual player wants to be involved, give them jobs! "Find me this, figure out that, here is an item in my monstrous trove of loot from my full time gaming" etc.players wanna be involved, it's easiest to involve them yourself. Faction bosses, get Lt. Give them gold, get some casual players some side action on your enterprise.

Yeah… except none of the low level chars I've tried to recruit helping me have ever came back with anything. I've sent them to spying, I've sent them to a remote place to interview an NPC, which confirms DM-plot's existence, btw.
I am aware that I probably have done something wrong.. but I can't figure out what. -
Nope still lost in the wall of text.

It's entirely possible that you haven't done anything 'wrong.'
Characters don't follow through for a host of IC reasons. Players don't follow through for a host of OOC reasons.
As annoying as it probably is to hear, "please try again!"

read bold text only.
is simple version. -
I understand people have different communication styles, but I've found this:
https://www.stephencovey.com/7habits/7habits-habit5.php
a very useful and helpful life skill over the past 20 years, when I first learned about it in high school.essentially: First seek to understand, and THEN to be understood.
random quote:

(which will help you understand why at some point I won't be quite so nice in playing to people's complaints about posts they don't feel like bothering to read, or opinions they don't feel like bothering to try and consider.
Life is stories, and experiences. If you don't learn one way, you will learn the other.
I wish you well on your journeys. -
It isn't the length of your posts, it's that you don't make any attempt at formatting. Basic English grammar would make your posts easier to read. Punctuate and capitalize. If it isn't your first language, of course I don't mean to bash on you.

I'm one of those who play nwn mainly (but not solely) for the intrigue and the immersion that comes with the rp through intrigue.
I'm fine with adventure be it exploring, crafting or hunting etc. but compared to intrigue I just don't get the same feel, particularly when the intrigue is dm-supported. I'd simply play another game if I couldn't get my intrigue.
What I'd like to see would be things that could stir up intrigue in a short time frame like races. Whoever gets to awesome place/item/solve mystery first creates intrigue vs good/evil forcing others to act. So far I've seen dms make some events of these but they were HUGE and could take a whole month. Could be done without much need of dms and a lot shorter.Concerning players being mocked in Old Town you gotta consider some chars to be mad or half mad attacking randomly for some crazy purpose like you wore the wrong color or they simply wanted a fight. Personally I love randomness that particularly intrigue contains making me feel anxious or thrilled, even if I was the one being attacked. The only times I didn't prefer were times of griefing (FD'ing/or almost dry looting) usually without much rp.

Theme weeks/ events, ie A dwarven hold has merchants/ traders etc in town, lots of people make a dwarf and do dwarf stuff that week… some people could reprise old dwarf characters/themes, share stories from coa history or forgotten realms lore, etc.
Such existed time ago, they were so successful at entertaining others that more and more players rolled dwarf chars and joined them.
Many hours of adventuring, lengthy moots at the forge were past events were related to the young ones, future plans were discussed, lots of ale consumed…
Such enjoyment raised the concerns of some, who felt those filthy dwarves where not playing by some unwritten standard of gold-roleplay, and felt entitled to come to the forums, to irc and spread how those horrible-horrible people having fun by themselves (no, didn't need no DM to have fun back then) were. About their "undeserved" levels, their "undeserved" gear, etc...
The-powers-that-be thought the goal of the server wasn't players spending their free time out of their RL work having fun, but to login and do more work, on behalf on following
railroadssomeone's plotlines, no matter if they were not interested on keeping tabs on who said what to whom, when, why, for months, only to have one or two hours of fun.So a process of harassing them begun, to the point of this little thing I posted almost a year ago, happening over and over, so much that some players started new characters who would not receive unsolicited "special attentions" every time they wanted to play. Many chose to simply drop CoA and seek new horizons.
I was among those who chose to roll a new character of higher stature, less rounded belly and no beard to keep playing. But after tasting the fun and camaraderie of the stout people, the new characters were not the same, so when one of the old dwarven pals called me "I've been playing at this place, there's rp, there's lots of adventure and we don't have to keep a log book justifying every little thing we do", I jumped in the boat and left, when I arrived to the new lands, I met not only the old pal, but also other ex-coaers who shared the same feelings.
I've been observing the process of self-destruction of CoA for these years, first kicking out the players that made the place entertaining for others (at least those who approached wanting entertainment) and themselves, and after that, turning a simple game easy to hop in and play into a mess of downloadable content, lists and lists of requirements for simple things like playing a base class or brewing a potion.
Last night (EU time), The Other Place had 78 players online (it's split on three servers to support them) and today at 14:00 while most EU players are still working/at class and those from the american continent are still in bed had almost 40.
Yeah it's sad to be right at the downfall of others, but that's how it is, do a forum search using the keywords "few players", many complaining that they can't do anything because there are no players.
Hey, maybe it's not too late, someone might have a backup of CoA V3 to restore Hullack to it's past glory, and players will have to bang the server door to get inside and play as the days of yore. ;-)
Oh, I almost forgot, those guys having fun and not PvPing others for the sake of it, were the clan of the Iron Anvil.
Btw, the elven warband was full of awesome also.
Now those still in denial after seeing with their very own eyes the result of their actions can begin the rotten fruit throwing.

Sour grapes much? The server back when you made this complaint was still running 55/55. The issues you muck up were largely resolved. If you just want to show up to insult people, why bother?
-
That doesn't sound anything like the CoA I've been playing on for the past year. Sorry you had a bad experience. The current DM team is great and allows players to do whatever they want that allows them to enjoy the server to the fullest. I have to echo Moloch though, if you're going to come raid the forums due to an issue that occurred three years ago, maybe it's time to let go or grow up a little. We're a community that is at low player base lately and the last thing we need are old and bitter players coming back to besmirch CoA's
reputation of high level roleplay and overall awesome. -
Roll up something, come see if we are all that bad, or if the awesome i've found is not just my perception!

The server back when this happened was indeed full, and after this happened and the word spread it plunged steadly.
Suuure, maybe it was written somewhere by Nostradamus and the actions of the Powers-that-be had nothing to do with it, it was on the stars. Or maybe it was the mess of unneeded changes of V4 that caused it, most probably both.
The fact it's, it happened, but now there are no players to use as scapegoat and blame them "OMG U POWERGAMERZ!" for the decline, you brought this upon yourselves.
If I wanted to insult someone, I would have done so, but yeah, it's sour grapes for some to see that "we told you so", it was told by many, over months, no one in power listened, well, there is no need to insult anyone, those who did the prosecution are eating those sour grapes, or maybe they left the mess to those who are still around, doesn't matter anymore.
I've not even bothered to write "come play to X and let CoA rot", because it's not my style and because there is no need to.
Moloch, you are the epitome of "sour" and have always been, at the slight hint of criticism, you jump at the neck, using adhominem attacks, these forums are full of them, the thing is… there are less and less people to be "scared" now.
When you addressed the "flower picking" long long ago in a PM to me, I did not reply to you yelling "DM favoritism! Once again favouring the brownnosers!", because you were right on it.
Heck, I'm not a cherub, never been (yeah, you have the logs to dig), the best I can say about myself is that I never willinggly harmed any other player char, not a single time I used my "undeserved" mechanical power to do so, neither did any of the closest lads of the IA (can't speak for each of the dozens that were part at it's peak).
I don't even know if you were part or not of the Hyper-spice Task Force, it doesn't matter anymore who did it, it happened long ago.
I'm guilty of it and I know it happens a lot, especially with the 3-5 people playing during day times.
King-Dobby, you've not been here for a year (at least not your forum account) and you've not seen what it was before the decline, but I wish you a good time.
@Dedagin:
Roll up something, come see if we are all that bad, or if the awesome i've found is not just my perception!
Oh, yes, I can do that anytime, I just have to use a foreign IP and an unregistered cdkey, that's easy, but why invest so much time in it? the players that made it fun are gone, playing elsewere or not.
On the awesome… of course not being IG I can't tell, but the things I see from outside don't speak much of "awesome", but of "new players scare":
@Tharg:
I have been randomly jumped and attacked by characters i have had no interactions with at least 4 times in Old Town in the last 4-5 months, with no role play until the fight is over. It happens every now and then and sucks. A highway man asking for a small amount is fine, but its the times when you are attacked by invisible foes using everything they can throw at you before you get a chance to react. Especially if you have no idea who they are.
@Dedagin:
the way it is currently set up, when team evil is around team good has three choices. Pay to play, PvP, or the ever hated spiremanceing.
On the first page of this thread, by yourself also.
For those who have not been here for a decade; I enjoyed most of the time at CoA, I learnt what RP was here and I learnt how to be a master of mechanical survival and team work (losing half your levels and all your gear respawning alone was a great incentive). I played here for five straight years, you don't do that if you are not having fun.
That's all, see you next year ;-)
