Is there caster hate on the server?
-
I am noticing a lot of issues when I play my pure Wizard class and most of it doesn't even make sense. I am wondering if there are others out there who feel that the server is being unkind to those who choose to go strait spell caster even if the caster chooses not to cast spells in order to hide he is a caster.
I would like it to be fixed but I know our DM team isn't perfict so there is going to be issue. I do however think that if we pull our knowlege together about the issues then it would make it easer for them to fix the issues we are having.
is this going to change anything? I honestly cant tell if it will or not as it is up to our DM Team to decide such things. -

Which kind of issues are you referring to? Usually people are happy to have mages or clerics in their parties, I have never had any particular issues playing a pure caster.
Or are you referring at the survivability of a pure wizard due to the new AI system? If the latter is the case there was a recent thread with some indication to increase the survivability of wizards (Wizardry 101 or something like that) in which some mechanical suggestions were indicated to assist those who might need a hand.I would like it to be fixed but I know our DM team isn't perfict so there is going to be issue. Agreed with Almadyr, specifics are appreciated. I personally -love- getting casters in my groups.

Considering that many of the more predominant and influencial pcs at the moment are mages, I dont think this is the case. If your pc is having problems then drink a haste potion and drop a couple lightning bolts on people that think its somehow wrong to be a mage. =)

Be sure you aren't on FD, :)

There is a current hate among some of the characters in arabel right now, this is a in game thing, and hopefully you are just running into those people, barbarians and members of specific houses that do not like casters, the thing that could be causing a problem is that some of them are not informing you it is merely a in game thing and not OOC
I play casters and am feeling some of the hate right now(even with my high charisma Bard, but that is just the way things go), but if you hang around the Hardcastle estate, they have casters that i am sure would be friends with you in game, once you learn how to get along with red wizards, also the characters in house Maleen will be open to casters as well. There are less players in Maleen right now than Hardcastle, so Hardcastle might be your best bet for like minded characters to hang around with…and they will give you lessons on how to deal with those miscreants who do not appreciate magic!

sorry for not beeing spacific. I am meaning the server it self and not the players. for example back spawn all of a sudden spawning on the casters when the fighters walk to a new area and the spawn isn't even sapost to happen. not even rolling inishative while stelthing when my party engages and yet I am somehow getting targeted by the AI (however a friend just told me how the AI works). Lagging out soo bad that A rat could one hit me and I would die. trying to git rid of a trap and then a monster spawns on us even though monsters normaly never spawn there. then there is the traps I am trying to git rid off and a player activates combat just before I am about to finish the trap causing me to roll a 1 and boom instadeath.
Simple things like this have happened to me repeatedly and I have several people who can prove it because they are on quests when I am on. I know people love to have casters with them and I understand roleplay that some people dont but I am starting to think that the server just hates my caster.
I am wondering if it is just me or are there otheres who feel this way? -
Sounds like you are having a bad case of lag and bad luck as well. Have you tried running with lower graphic settings to reduce your lag?
Backspawn do exists but they aren't supposed to drop on top of you, unless of course you were far away from your party when they activated the spawn…
The AI will target the weakest link so you'll have to find way to not be the weakest link. Buffs can help. I know some casters wander around invisible sometimes to stay safe too.
When you are handling a trap, stay IC. Have your PC warn the group. Then make sure they heard and tell em you'll handle it only if they stay put for a minute. If they listen, handle it, if they don't, then your character can tell them he wont risk it firing up in his face and you keep your distances from it. Handling traps is an IC thing. RP with the other characters in your party on how to handle the situation.
If you are used to play a high hp and ac char, playing a wizard might need some getting used to. To keep things fun, you could always ask around in character for tips to say alive :D could make for some fun RP.
anyway, just my two cents.

I am wondering if it is just me or are there otheres who feel this way? There are a few places on the server where enemies spawn behind you. It sounds like you got surprised by the assassins in the Lumber Camp cave that spawn once players get near the exit.
As a new player, CoA can definitely be challenging. Both for mages and for front liners (so don't abandon your character yet). If you want to survive as a mage, these are my tips:
1. Don't take the lead. A single trap could kill you. Watch out for traps on chests and doors too. Consider investing in the Search skill.
2. Prepare buffs for your front liners, such as Bull's Strengths and Hastes, rather than offensive spells like Magic Missiles or Fireballs. This is the easy way to play a mage, since you don't have to engage in combat, and there's no risk of blasting your own party members. That doesn't mean offensive spells are bad on CoA though. But they generally demand more skill from the mage. They may also demand a well organized party.
3. Stay invisible. Once you're level 6 or so, you'll have enough spell slots to cast the spells you want for your party, and also keep yourself invisible through most of the quest (always have an invisibility wand on your quick bar too, for emergencies). Your crossbow isn't really needed by this point. Being invisible takes care of most of your problems. But remember that it can also give you a false sense of security. There are enemies here and there with See Invisibility pots, and they won't hesitate to drink them and chase you. AOE's are also still very much a danger, which leads into the final tip.
4. Keep some distance to the front liners, or you'll get hit by enemy AOE's. AOE dangers come in many forms, like poison gas traps (that can cripple a mage completely) and fireballs (that can send a mage instantly to the fugue). AOE attacks often come quickly. If you're close to the fighter when the enemy mage is starting to cast his/her fireball, chances are it's too late to run away. So always stay at a safe distance. These tips pretty much make you a buffbot. That's boring to some, and it doesn't fit every concept. Neither is it necessarily the "best" way to play a mage. But it's a relatively safe one that fits a new player who is getting familiar with the server.
Hope the the tips were helpful.

also use counter spells on enemy casters, your front line may appreciate that…make sure you tell them you did...lie that you did it, tell them how important you are...invest in a mind spell that has an area effect like confusion but yeah dont hit party members with spells, they wont forgive you

No. The AI does not target the weakest link. Please do not propitiate this rumour.
ALL AC/HP/class based targetting systems that ever existed (though no class based ones ever existed) have been entirely removed, because of complaints about it being unfair or not fun.
ALL.
ALL.
GONE.
Ooooooo k.
So yes. There is no system than targets low AC/HP/wizards/casters/any class in particular over another.
It does not exist.
There is no system that does this.
No.
-
Just want to say.
There is no HP/AC/Class based targetting system in the AI, as I forgot to say that.
-
Zool, are you saying that there is currently a system in place that targets low AC characters? I am shocked!
-
I just wanted to confirm that wasn't the case Zool. as for everyone else, I read your help tips and thank you for them but you could not be farther from what I should do. even though I am a caster I can't cast anything around my fellow players and I am not ging to waist a lvl and cross class as I am hoping to get the highest I can with my spells. some of the dms know that I can't do anything thanks to a contract I have with someone. this contract makes my spells a little more extravigant then they should be but other characters froun on this so I tend not to cast spells or enter combat.
as you can see now I have to play my character verry different from your basic paper cut caster, and I am not new to the RPG Scene. I have held games for multiple types of table top as well as playing games as a player. I do not realy need to know what to do as a player but I thank you for trying to look out for those who are knew. -
Backspawns need to be removed, TBH, unless they are far away enough from the group or a emote a 'sensation of danger is felt from behind you' that goes out to the entire party is in place. Even I feel the back spawn on Lumberjacks is mean-spirited and vindictive, even if it isn't the case.
As for this notion of the AI targeting casters, it's not true, and I can confirm it. If you attack, expect attention. It's as simple as that, frankly. If the enemy sees you first, you're going to be targeted. If the enemy is standing near you, it might switch to hit you with an AOO. Zool made it explicitly clear in his two posts that no such scripts exist. There is a word for this sort of belief though- illusory correlations, simply because it happens to you my sheer coincidence you got targeted, you believe it happens to everyone. Much like a few couples adopt children because they thought they were infertile, then they suddenly become with child- it must work that way for everyone. This simply isn't the case, but it SEEMS to be due to testimonial information instead of quantitative data.
I've played a Caster on CoA during the AI additions, and it was NEVER a problem if you were smart and played it cautiously. Sometimes you die and there is nothing you can do about it- that's life and that part of any server shouldn't go away (can it go away?) as there is danger in the smallest of Ankhegs…
I apologize if you felt like the server seems to have a vendetta against casters, it seems that your experiences, as a self-confessed new player, is fairly typical of any new player experience, lots of dying until you learn the lay of the server and how it seeks to challenge you mechanically. I am sure in time you will learn the street smarts necessary in time, for with new places comes new skills, and a steep learning curve.

Sorry my bad, The AI perhaps goes after those using range then. Seems they do not like those pesky shooters.
I've seen mages and rogues targeted while they were behind the fighter line, perhaps it was because they were using range then.
-
No. It does not go after those using range. It goes after people fairly randomly now, but favours those that do high damage at times. It's pretty crap now as 'intelligence' because when it was intelligent people found it too hard, so I made it pretty stupid, and just kept all the cool things like using skills and items, and buffing each other, and healing each other and such.
-
Strange, nevermind then, must've been random bad luck I seen lately.
back on topic though, you don't have to be nothing but a buff bot. There are all sort of mages, and some of them actually pick up a sword and fight!
Maybe convince one of the warriors to take up rear guard too. Back spawns are to keep you on your toes after all :D -
I don't think people found it too hard. In fact, it made things a breeze for heavily armored people. But that ease came at the price of those in clothes and leathers.

It is possible for conjurers and evokers to not only survive but be valuable assets.
A lot of it is timing, and a lot of it is supplies - always have invis handy[summon, summon, summon, fireball, invis, live!]
