What to spend gold on?
-
I notice some players have thousands and thousands of gold coins in their inventories, why?
What is it that is stopping some people from spending gold? What is it? IC OOC? Module design? As most quests reward you with gold, the idea is that you'd be spending gold on something. Curious if there is anything DMs can/should do here.

IMO, people are waiting for something worthwhile to come up for auction, like +1 ench or even +2 ench weapons, +2 armor, something like that.
Rise of Gold and Silver items will end up with some players spending more money.
Most people just end up hoarding gold as quest running gets easier when you reach certain level of equipment and their "favourite" quests are done blindfolded with none or very little consumable use. -
I usually spend gold on healing wands and whatever other wands. Since my characters normally all end up with 5k+ gold, I made it a purposeful character weakness to excessively spend stuff. I usually buy atleast one stupid meaningless thing a day or whatnot.
I find alot of people initiall save up for their equipment - but I've also noticed not alot of goodish equipment going around for sale lately, so it could be why there's alot of gold floating about.
-
Some people just like to hoard things.
-
Most people I see who hoard gold do a lot of questing, use as few consumables as possible and never waste a single coin on extra "fun" stuff.
There is no real way to fix this if you ask me, I use supplies quite a lot, waste money on rewarding people IG or just clothes/random items.
I have roughly 4-5k with Freya, it drops down the odd thousand depending on IG. But I quest a lot less than most people from what I have seen. -
Not sure it's something to "fix" just curious if there are things people would want to spend their hard earned gold on that we're not offering them yet.
-
I foresee people wanting to purchase:
Socketable Gems
Designs for crafting
Consumables
Good all round items for the everyday use
Maybe make the first two drop more often?
The other are more situational and player driven with the crafting now.

Most of my gold end up spend on wands and things…Through I happily save up a small fortune for heavy armor Molly could cast in that had boots!
-
Hmm, I think there's too much free healing and consumables around. Lower the amount, and people will have to spend gold on consumables again.
The less permanent things you have to spend gold on, the more gold will have to be spent.I for one are never high enough level to bother paying for a raise, and with the gear safe from looting/server crash its really not much to loose on death any more.
On the note of socketable gems, perhaps it could be possible to pay large amounts of coins to "purify" the flawed/crippeld ones? And perhaps this would have to be done a few times before the gem finally crumbles?

Make a version of the socket-crafter gizmo that will add a socket to a item with properties and they'll sell for vast amounts.
For instance, the current socket-kit adds 2 sockets to a item and sells for 600+
Make one that will add a socket to a item, if it already has up to one property, and charge 2000 for it.
Make one that will a two sockets to a item, if it already has a property.. or one socket if it has two props, and charge 5000 for it.Watch the gold melt.

heh…the highest I have gotten money wise is 3k...Right now I'm sitting on around 100 gp with merrick...so I'm broke lol... On another note, most of my spending is really on discipline gems... at like somewhere around 270 ish...for one, my money goes fast..
-
I actually think those discipline gems are too cheap, but then again they can be unreliable when really needed

Honestly, there is ALWAYS something to spend gold on.
To me, gold is means to get consumables after i buy myself the "perma-gear" stuff. (armor, rings, amulet).
I see people dying all the time with a small fortune in their bag but no consumables to survive, or they had them and did not use them. It honestly seems like some people just like looking at big numbers.
If you got gold, healing, barkskin and shield you should be stocking up on deathw ard potions, negative energy potions, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, Putting some gold into traffic to buy information, bodyguards, lower level helpers to do things for you and spread the love. Gold is useless jsut lying around in your inventory, the auctions of old are a thing of the past. Most auctions these days look like the reject loot of a level 3.
There's a crapton of things to spend gold on if you know what you need.
-
I always spend mine on potions and single use items or I pay others to so stuff or give it out as rewards to bards that rp singing or performing in someway.
I can't really think of something else I need to spend gold on as I always spend it. -
Quests are too easy and pay too much.

I think its more a case of quests are too easy for some of the more talented questers, and as a result, they accumulate massive ammounts of gold, and consumables. But yes, with the difficaulty of many quests lowered, and the rewards staying the same, or being raised, it favors mechanically savvy players. Characters that are close to said pcs also benefit, as gold is most of the time divided equally, regardless of contribution.

Speak for yourself!
I horde gold to buy that rare piece of loot that goes up for sale on occasion.
It also pays to save about 2k for a resurrection at the temple when that silly dire wolf with 15 AB crits you twice in a row.

I don't have thousands of gold and the reason is! doing lots of things… I think the reason gold is stockpiled perhaps because the players sdon't use any of their equipment! Another reason is that there is a limited number of quests Bri can do so acquiring gold is a bit hard sometimes.
Anyways... I kinda slowly wittle away at my potions, going into the swamps, or patrol in the hullack they disappear, and that's what I spend my gold on. Next to that arrows and what not... A big plus to having lots of gold is paying someone to do a task for you or you can put awards up for things.. [Shrug] I think if you are a player with lots of gold, look for ways to use it and involve others with it's use.

I'm beginning to learn the ins and outs of paying people to get things done when you're not around (or supplying them for those moments) but as a result I find myself more often broke than not. The problem is kind of similar to the one faced by crafters in general. That being there really is no big purchase you -need- to spend your money on once you reach a certain point (and we all do!). Armor, shield, weapons, jewelry.
You save up at low levels and buy the fighter plate or (insert nifty thing here) and then once that's out of the way you focus on the next major purchase until you're kitted out. Then all you have to do is spend wisely on consumables. That combined with a lot of the other factors already listed such as farming familiar quests and such really leaves no -need- to spend that gold unless you're spending it to further plots.
As strange as it sounds, I'd be all for a major reduction in the availability of 'reasonably good' equipment from NPC's and a slight raise in what can be produced by PC's to keep the gold flowing circular. But just like anything, it's not a perfect suggestion and the ways to abuse it and 'fun factor' that may or may not result from it are questionable at best.
