Questions about the new Metafactions
-
I hope its a misinterpretation Lunatic High.
As the idea is to make it EASY to join the Silver Bannerman and FORCE our "cool kids" to roleplay and adventure with a wider group of players than they seem to sometimes.

It took me 2 RP session to get an "approval" (and 100 gold and a nice run in the hullack with a few people - btw thanks for the fun).
And I hope to get more green lights from other retainers. -

If any one else is interested and have it hard to find retainers, try to write an open letter rather than to a house if you just want to join the Bannermen. -
Independant concepts can do absolutely great. Factions are useful to help get your concept off the ground, or develop it if it fits. But you can certainly fly 'solo' (though you'll likely work in a group anyway!) and go have fun wherever you want, doing whatever you want, in fact, theres a few groups of characters I could name doing just that right now.

So far I've been through 2+ Rp sessions with several retainers, almost died on two adventures into differnt places, and spent almost all my consumables and cash with no reward, just the thrill of the RP. Like I said, I'll keep at it, but I have been on quests/adventuers with a couple retainers where I blatently say "I WANT TO BE A SILVER BANNERMAN" and they just say something along the lines of "That's nice" and move off the topic.

During the path of recommendation I touched the following stages:
-almost died? yes- had to find assistance to get what I was asked? yes
- empty purse for paying others to assist me? yes
No reward but the thrill of RP? Well that's what we are here for don't we?
PS: you don't want to be a Bannerman, you want to protect and to serve!

Maybe he just wants a pretty uniform and some attention? Should be enough to join a faction.
In fact, I'm a bit disappointed by how DM faction folks handle SB recruitment. So far they were only able to involve the general server population in their plots via sendings a la "Gathering adventurers to kill some X monsters in Y place." SB are a great opportunity to get more people involved in more meaningful and fun rp. So one would think they would be much more proactive with recruiting.

I advertise that I am willing to talk to anyone about the matter of induction and added announcements to let people know it is out there. However I also tell people who approach me that my tasks are harder and more challenging and that if they wish they may approach another Retainer on the matter.
The idea behind a harder task is really simple for me:
-
It enables the person to get in touch with his concept and fully grasp what he intends to do with it in terms of goals and persona.
-
It causes the player to interact and involve other people - Which is the key to everything.
-
Many tasks have more than one way to accomplish them and thus player ingenuity is in play here - Something that is to be nurtured and valued by the DM team.
-
A portion of the task throws the player directly into a meta-plot, encouraging them to take part in the final goal from the get go.
Some people dont like to work harder to achieve things and this is why I always give them the chance to seek someone else, but ICly I am bound to my character. I spoke with one of the persons I tasked and got their permission to post the following quote - Bear in mind that this is a new player to the server:
It's been great actually, it's given me an opportunity to talk to a WHOLE lot of people on the server. I mean, I get that the DM's want to make it easier to get involved, but there's definite value in keeping some challenge in the process. If nothing else, it familiarizes new players with the CoA playstyle, which, speaking as a relatively new player does take a little getting used to. It's not just about talking to other people, it's about engaging them in the storyline. I had a brilliant chat with spoiler earlier tonight about an encounter she had with a Riftspawn creature and our conversation resulted in a fairly significant revelation for her. And I think you run the risk of losing moments like that by making it too easy

Maybe, Seter, you should read what Moloch said on it:

You can justify it any way you want, with any excuse you want, but the net effect is your intentionally making something difficult that is supposed to be easy.

Is the mercentalist faction still in? I can't wait for Hardcastle and his mercenaries to start breaking some knee caps :D

Ok guys, opinions have been voiced on the bannermen recruitment process. It's new to the retainers as well, they're trying really hard to make it fun and involving, thanks for the comments, but I think much more and it will risk making them feel bad, and they are meant to be having fun too. If you have any issues with how it's being handled, contact a DM privately from now on. Thanks guys.

I believe metafactions other than the Cormyr metafaction are going to be rolled out in the future. Then there is going to be competition among metafactions to recruit characters. The competition to recruit characters is going to have a huge influence on recruitment. Now, the Cormyr metafaction is the only game in town, with the majority of the authority and power, so you play on their team, by their rules, or you go home. In the future, when there are more metafactions, characters that can't get on one team can get on another team. I believe that is going to make more incentive for everyone to try to bring more players into the fold.

Everyone made a fair point.
To be more constructive, I'd like to come forth with a small suggestion. Right now faction members seem to be content with insider rp and don't have a real incentive to go out of their way and actively involve adventurers in their plots (I don't see occasional monster slaying expeditions as real involvement). Despite what criticalthreat said, i suspect that when there are more metafactions, faction PCs will have even more peers to rp with and will have even less incentive to involve the not-so-special characters.
So I would like to suggest a system where factions will actually benefit from the number of active members in their ranks. For example headquarters' monetary upkeep, where more members/money mean better crafting facilities and stronger faction loot. And that's just one way to handle this, there are many other simple and effective ones.
This way we can be sure factions will recruit actively and actually compete for members.
Thoughts? -
People can be expected to make the slightest bit of effort. (I am not saying that the following is anything near what you implied Direfish, btw) Lately i've seen way too many people who complain abut not being involved, yet do nothing to get involved. Faction members will not get you involved if you are unwilling to make the slightest bit of effort. They are your window in, not the ones who will handle plotting and such FOR you. Make an effort, you'll see it rewarded.
And to those who feel not so special and ignored: viewtopic.php?t=155018

CB, recruiting should be a mutual effort.
I'm just trying to come up with an incentive for the "employer" side, because they seem to have none. -
The incentive is that if faction members don't hold up to their end of the 'bargain' that is an application, they will end up not being in a faction anymore, really.
Having said that, what CB said is very true, it's a two sided coin, if you try to get someone involved with a story, and they mostly ignore it, unless there is promises of loot and XP, then, well, your probly not going to be that bothered.

Alright, lets get back to questions about the new metafactions, rather than a discussion on bannermen induction process. It was a valid question, but I think we've just about exhausted it for now.
