Bidding on Alts
-
I know this has been brought up on several occasions in IRC. There has been a large number of people who will bid on items on an alt, especially if they have an App character. Personally, I find it a bit disrespectful because a lot of the times these alts are usually Power Quest alts so they have a lot of coin to out bid people who bid with their Mains. I just wanted to bring this up and see if I am the only one or if this is a widespread annoyance.
((And yes, I know some people bid with an Alias, I am not talking about that))
-
To add what can be annoying is characters that are many years old that come with crap loads of gold and just beat everyone out.
-
Yea like the 10k stoneskin ring, I've never had more than 10k on ANY character..and that I use to help other players. I have never figured out how to get rich on arabel, nor do I really care to.
But arabel is about interaction, not over priced swag.

That is kind of dumb, especially if the alt is outbidding a character who is an enemy of their main (whether intentionally or unintentionally) that's pretty lame status.

Not sure about any Alts bidding but 10k is chump change. When you get into the hundreds of thousands then you are there.
In an auction, prices are set by what the market will bear. Holding an auction then changing the rules halfway through is also annoying.
If you don't want to see insane auction prices don't auction things off. Hold a contest instead or put items up as a reward for furthering your factions goals. That is going to make it about character interaction instead of "Over Priced Swag".
-
The quests give out money in a whole different way than they used to. You end up with huge amounts of money if you happen to die few levels. And you know, in real life, all the cool shit in auctions cause to undeserving buggers too…
-
I respect and agree with the OP. I will withdraw any bids I had on my alts(although I think I was only bidding against Lisa's alt heh).
Also, in agreement with styxxbone. Using cool gear as rewards for faction goal promoting sounds good. If I had any cool gear I'd give it out as a reward for people finding me important stuff.

Well, I've ever only bid on my main. And he's made his coin during this iteration of activity. So I'm going to disregard this as pertaining to me personally.
But yes, getting enough coin to actually ask for decent prices on items of value is easy, if that is one of your characters goals. Just do quests. Yes, 'powerquesting' or at least DOING those quests every now and then nets you gold. Not much anything else does, except crafting wands. It's a money-in/money-out economy, and the way coin enters is through the quests. It leaves through the crafting system and through various NPC merchants. So in order to have gold, you need to do those quests, or somebody needs to, to get coin into circulation.
Fruitcakes for example. They are EASILY worth a thousand to fifteen hundred gold, as they're basically a wand of Cure Critical wounds that works for everyone. AND they're aquirable by low-level characters, which I think is genious, as it means that low-level character that gets lucky gets a much-needed boost in getting their 'starting gear' together. Still, if you offer that much for them, suddenly people think you're cheating somehow.
So, if you think it's unfair other characters have money when you are using it to further your rp with others, then I think you need to re-evaluate the point of that character. You cannot have a vow of poverty and still win bids on an open marketplace from out of pocket if there is any sort of bidding contest. And if you're putting stuff on auction, don't be surprised that it sells for higher then your starting price if it's something everyone wants.
Anyway, putting Gorrek away for a while now, since my app character got approved.

Time really is money. if you have the time to quest, you can make money. Wand crafting doesn't seem like it will make you much of a profit, unless you're ripping your customers off. You still need to do quests to get the experience to stuff in the wands, and if you just keep that money instead of risking it in making wands where the occasional issue will eat away all your profit, you're probably better off. I see crafting wands and potions for a reasonable price, i.e. where you about break even as a way to contribute, just like how other people contribute by hitting things hard.
I hardly ever bid in auctions, as the prices to me are way over the top, I don't carry that much money on me, if I did, I'd feel I was doing something wrong. For the same reason I just give stuff I find that I can't use (or even can use but seem like a better fit for another character) away for free.

Yes. Bidding with alts should be against the rules in my opinion.

Being that I don't often play my alts and even when I do I use them because my main is either stressing me out or I just want a bit of light hearted RP, I personally see no issue with bidding on things so long as it's not something insane for unheard of gobs of money.
While I definitely respect the idea that taking 'uber lewts' out of circulation is pretty lame, I never have the coin (on my main or my alts) to purchase said lewts so it doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. Others ability to generate coin and such may vary, just my two cents

To add what can be annoying is characters that are many years old that come with crap loads of gold and just beat everyone out.
This is my main issue. It contributes nothing but a bit extra gold to the seller, when unique and special gear could be in circulation among characters actually BEING PLAYED and doing things that bring fun. Old characters who just wants to add to their polished collection should just be DM killed on the market and all their loot left for grabs.
God know how many plot items are lost in their pockets. But then we players who sell these things notice this happening we have the opportunity to ignore the bids (and our own blatant greed) and inform the player that we don't intend to sell to someone not active anymore. Characters can also ICly discard bids by people they don't support for IC reasons (preferably without meta, of course).
Alts are being played, albeit not as often as the main is. Using alts as a tool to deny your enemies loot is meta-gaming and should be a bannable offense. This is not necessarily intentional from the players side however, and it is also hard to punish in any way.
All we can do is ask people to show some OOC courtesy. Does your alt really need this item that badly? Do you play your alt enough to warrant him/her buying this item over highly active characters who might need it more? Do you just buy this item because your IC enemy is trying to?
We're all grown-ups here. You are allowed to behave like it too. Even if its the internet you don't have to go all crazy-baboon with things, even if you can. -
It was interesting to see a couple of new/old faces or just ones I've never met on the sheriff's auction after the executions. It was an IG auction, after the sending people started to log in.
I think to myself that those guys mainly play in other timezones and just logged in in and odd hour to participate in something what should have been handled in the forums anyway. I think that, so I don't have to bear ill feelings.: ))
-
Wait, why would you show "courtesy" in bidding on items. They're put up for grabs -to the highest- bidder by the seller. That's the way an auction works!
-
To add what can be annoying is characters that are many years old that come with crap loads of gold and just beat everyone out.
This is the annoying bit for me.
Also DMs should dish out gold to characters they see doing well, as well as RP XP. Gold pushes plots!

It's always a problem when you're hosting a "public event", be it a tournament or an auction. There is always the chance that a powerful old character long retired (if ever involved) in CoA plots turns up to steal the show.
I like what O'louth did with his auction. It's an IC way to differentiate between characters and gives up-and-coming main characters a chance.
I don't have a problem with lowbie or middling alts bidding on things or competing in tournaments, it's just when the stars of the show are characters who belong in a completely different league that it gets silly.

except he doesn't answer related messages. :)

Auctions are designed to get the best price for a piece of loot. This is not really in the interest of Play on the Server, but it is what sellers want. Bidding as an Alt is not and will not be against the rules, but I expect players of Alt characters to bid with courtecy. Having said that, if you wish an item as an alt there is nothing wrong with bidding for it.
I would actually much rather Main Characters obtained their juicy loot from Questing rewards than out-bidding someone in an auction anyway. So much more fun.
-
I think bidding with alts is fine as long you play that alt once in awhile. I am taking a break from my main druid while I play with an alt Legion.
I agree with the OP that bidding with a super rich alt without the intention of actually playing with it only unfairly takes the loot out of circulation = UBAD.
