WotC is at it again. Gives the middle finger to Hasbro
-
Already? I just got done reading 4e.
-
That article really says it all. WotC is feeling the squeeze now that Paizo's Pathfinder has been the #1 selling RPG for a while. They want to reconnect with the player base and NOW they want our feedback. "Uh, why won't you buy our product? Why are you buying Pathfinder?"
I think it's too late to unify the player base.

Always been a little off after core 3e. 3e was a great and simple system after the THAC0 nightmares, but 3e overloaded with too many books; approx 673 classes (with PrCs) and 1,581 feats, too many deities and rules and races to count. 3.5 only added to that.
I appreciate 4e trying to trim that bloat down, honestly. Albeit it lost a lot of the uniqueness that 3e offered concepts, but it was getting ridiculous and had to be done.
Not sure what they're trying to accomplish with 5e now. Too little, too late.

3.5 having too much content was a problem that was very very easy to get around… The answer was very simple, if you didn't like the added content, don't use it.
The rules allowed for many possibilities and if you didn't like some of them you could just not use them. Wheras 4edition pretty much forced you to play a limited game whether you wanted it or not.
5$ says their 5th ed is just their attempt at making more money, not really their attempt at getting their players back.
-
Of course they were motivated by money. I think that's how 4E was put out to begin with. WotC ran of ideas of what to add. Now that they LOST customer base over the whole thing, they are back to the drawing board.
You are 100% about the bonus content. In most cases, I simply did not use it. I may look through various splat books for more specific ideas. The core rules were not that bloated. I'd say the opposite of 4E though, where a new player is daunted by just how much there was to it. It was stream lined for the DM, not the players.
Also, given enough time and the proper player base to support it, 4E would have likely grown to include just as many if not more splat books and bonus content.

Me and my friend had a lengthy discussion of what WotC has become…it's trash.
-
I liked the 3e and 3.5e content. I knew it was all bonus content, but when it's up to the DM anyway what is used and what is not my PnP group never had any problems. To be honest, I loved the bonus content, reading all the ideas the writers were coming up with, and what I could use on my own characters.

3E fanboys

The simplest and easiest, the better, I'd say.
-
shrugs I still play 3.5 Probably still will when 5e comes out. Play what you like, leave the dying franchises to the business men
-
If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I like my 3.5

Took me forever just to understand 3.5E. . I'mma stick to that
