Server Lag
-
I ve actually noticed an increase in lag since the change of server box some time ago. It was when the introduction of the moonwalk effect took place and never again was walking the same.
Also I m pretty sure that with the introduction of cloaks in the game (patch 1.69) there was an increase in lag but that was quite a long ago and I dont think anyone would want cloaks disabled on the server side. (We could test it though, there is an option to disable those in the according ini file).
Also using a modem instead of modem/router seems to make my lag dramatically decreased, even though I m pretty sure my router firewall is set up correctly or even off at times.

I haven't noticed much lag. In fact, I rarely lag at all. Don't think it's box related.

Lag: a lot.

I think some people are getting slightly confused between lag and graphical performance here. If your frame rate slows down, thats your computer, if your frame rate is fine, but your character isnt doing stuff till several seconds after you tell them too, thats lag, from one end or the other.
In my case, I'm pretty sure most of my lag comes from my end, as I'm playing on a pretty damn poor mobile internet connection, but the moonwalk effect, that's the server in some shape or form, though I'm used to that now, it doesn't really fuss me.

Well, in my case I have a fairly high end system (at least for NWN) and I never had a problem a month or so ago, also, as I said I reformated my comp as well, it should run like a charm, but sence I've been on its been more laggy, so I can only assume its the server.

so what is it when you type something in the chat box and it only appears on screen above your characters head 5-10 seconds later?

Lag.

yes, that is lag, a choppy frame rate is your computer not being able to keep up with the game's graphical requirements.
These are two entirely different issues.
Yes, if the server now has a bunch more graphically intensive things in it, your computer wont be able to run the game as fast, and your frame rate will slow down, but, this is not lag.
Lag is when you click on an NPC and it takes ages for their conversation to come up, or when you type something, hit enter, and it does not appear above your head for some time, or when you click to drink a potion and your character stands there doing nothing for a good while.
The difference between the two is that lag is when you send a signal (click an NPC, type something, click a potion) and it takes times to get to the server and back to you to display it, whereas your computer not being able to run the game at a decent framerate, is when you have done nothing, except perhaps moved the camera angle and the -entire game- slows down.
Your frame rate can be 5000000 frames per second, but if the server is lagging, it would still take time for your character to drink that potion, equally, if the server is lag free but your computer cant run the game at full speed, your character would begin drinking the potion immediately, but your machine would run the animation of the character (and everything else on screen) with many frames skipped out.

I propose we call it Adventurer's Disease In-Game, categorized by numbness in the legs, potion fumbling, running into enemy swords, sudden bursts of speed, inability to speak…
hehe.
Yes, everyone, CLEAN UP YOUR LOOT and CLOSE YOUR MAPS.

This is lag on your internet connections end actually. The lag I was refering too was server lag and not performance lag as Im sure most people are complaining about in this thread.
Theres a simple way of testing if you are lagging, or if its the server thats lagging (connection wise). If your connection is lagging, your text will not come out immediatly. If the server is lagging, (Doing the moonwalks ect) your text will still come out immediatly regardless of how bad the server is lagging.
If its performance wise, you will be stuttering. Nothing to do with connection lag really.
For the most part I and many other people have been experiencing server end lag (Actions will take place later, moonwalking and jumping) - but text will still come out the moment you press enter.

One prime symtom of server lag may be withnessed by clicking the upper-left icon (cancel action) while walking across a map. You sometimes will jump ahead of your visible location, as the cancel forces your client to refresh with the real position. This also is visible when your familiar/companion/dominated critter seems to be walking -ahead- of you. As far as I know, only Shira's dog has some evil underfoot code that makes it run ahead and block you.

I don't know what it is, but since I returned it has been hardly playable. I have at least 1 or 2 seconds of delay, with times when it reaches 5 seconds delay, making pvp and pvm impossible, except on rare occasions.

The ambient commoner scripts could probably be removed. They don't add altogether much (There'd be still the 4 or 5 in each area wandering randomly, but all the chatting and cross-area stuff would stop, which should also eliminate the mass spawn-in nobles)
