Server Lag
-
Its been some time since I played Arabel, I played, came back every year or so for a month or two, and leave again.
One thing I have noticed is a dramatic increase in server lag throughout the years. I've noticed it for about a month now, and with every single one of my five deaths in the past week purely because of lag during combat preventing movement/usage of healing, I would like to ask if there is anything that can be done.
The server admins and DM team probably have noticed this problem, what I want to know is whether or not players can do anything to help.
Dying by lag with only 20 players online is pretty sad.
One thing I remember from before is to clean up after yourself. Don't drop items on the ground, don't leave lootbags (with ichor or fairy dust, for example).
I can't think of anything else right now. I admit I am a bit sour because of 2 lagdeaths in a row just a few minutes ago, typing this in the fugue.
But really, what is the primary cause of lag? The server box? The connection? A too-big module? Too many scripts firing on hearbeat? Its obviously not the number of players online.
I'm just curious, and looking for a solution to improve my gaming experience, and everyone else's.
Thanks.

It's all happened since the Zhents arrived. I blame them and their slavery.
Seriously, I think I've noticed more lag comments more frequently in the last six months. The question I find myself asking is: Am I looking back at the halcyon days of yore, thinking "Those were the days" and really, the lag is the same, I just don't remember the horrors of lag.

Zhents rule all. The server wil stop lagging when you all convert and swear allegience to Bane.
I have noticed more lag as well. This may very well be due to more areas having the new textures as well. In the past the areas has less detail and were a bit simpler.
I took a few months off from the server and the day I left I had 0 lag in normal times and now I find myself lagging alot often.
-
Is it the new areas? Graphics should not contribute so much to latency or server lag. It may be because the number of players per area is increased because of bigger city areas.
-
Hrm. I think I haven't been seeing all this lag. Maybe I'm just lucky.
-
When the server switched to the new box a while back, there was a noticeable change in lag. The big problems were sorted, but ever since, I still get the wierd walking backwards before forwards thing which never used to happen on the old one.
Other than that though, the lag comes and goes as it always has as far as I see.

Yes, the lag is inconsistent, which leads me to believe that the server is sharing bandwidth with something that occasionally causes it to be throttled.

How about the 1,000,000 noblemen in West Arabel?
-
I'm quite sure each wandering citizen adds to the lag. The 20-50 noblemen that accumulates in West Arabel probably eats up quite a bit of CPU time.
-
How about the 1,000,000 noblemen in West Arabel?
I'd say that's definately what's causing the lag. A more realistic number would be like 300 of them amassed together.
-
The 100000000000 noblemen and women shouldnt spawn like that at all, theres something wrong with it, it happened outside the west gate a while back with phoenix legion guys and was fixed.

Bring on the lag…though it frustrates me at times all in all its welcome. Why? Because the site is a victim of its own success. Better to have immersion and 55/55 with some lag than 25/55 and little lag. High numbers and DM events/spice are when lag seems to happen. It is also when the most fun is to be had. I will take a little lag and grumble then press on with an occassional death before sacrificing numbers and DM fun that make this server what it is....the best

We're actually talking about horrid, 10 second lag when there are as few as 20 players online, actually. lag at 55 players is normal.
-
I noticed this lag a few weeks ago. Ping is normal (130-150) for me all the time, but I lag from log in to log out.
-
Not an hour ago there were 9 people logged in and I was getting near 10 second lag in West Arabel. It seems the nobles are spreading fast, they had a congo line stretched around the block.
-
I don't just think its the nobles though, ever since the new server there have been those lag spikes that was discussed about long time ago, and I think they have only been getting worse.
-
We should just abolish all nobility in Arabel - problem solved.

Funny this is posted, I came here to post this exact question. I hadnt been playing Arabel in the last 2 weeks or so nearly as much due to PC troubles, I finally just decided to reformat my computer. Anyways, I have noticed that last couple days sence I have been on more regularly how awful the lag is when walking around town, and I rarely ever got lag, or at least bad lag, unless the server was full or there was a bunch of people in my immediate area fighting or the like. Now I lag just walking around town, its awful! I am glad to see it doesnt have to do with my freshly reformated comp! Haha.

I admit while always having some minor lags here and there, it haven't changed much for me that I can notice. I hardly ever get any lags of notice on quests, some on events, and a bit on those huge goblin invasions and whatnot, but thats reasonable.
The west district is bad, there I usually run keyboardrun and keep the zoom far down on myself to avoid all those extra visuals. But there is always the option to turn down graphics and visual interface. Just throwing it out there…

Sadly, it is not only the nobles. This morning (GMT) a gang of three worthies wiped the hullack's dirt with the hides of an quintuple gob chief spawn. I didn't count the gob kills but it was around 50. Not surprisingly, throwing summons and the odd AE'd bear in the mix did cause lag, but not that much.
As far as I know, the gobs had been lurking around in this map since yesterday night (GMT) when team Malar + Gurm had to logoff.
