I am curious about what players are looking for from factions - and why factions may not be appealing to join. Is it simply they don't fit with the a character concept? Or is it the application process?

I think it's a little of them both. Some people don't like having a commanding leader either.
My own opinion… Well, just don't ask. I am considering possibilities right now. Might just join a faction.

a few thoughts:
Positive on why join a faction:- factions are a way to obtain some interesting piece of loot that cannot be stolen by the ordinary death
- factions are a way to get DM interaction more easily (this is not necessarily true however)
- factions are a way to get involved in server related plots and minor adventures
- factions can give a character more "recognized" power/authority
- factions can help a character to become more "real" adding up features/characteristics/recognition (i.e the great wizard is an influent member of the mage guild even if void of mechanical power)
- factions are a way to involve DMs in PC related plots and or ideas
Negative on why don't join a faction:
- feeling of being obliged to "follow" the script of the application
- feeling of being forced to do what the NPC in the faction requires and not to pursue my character goals (in particular true when I have limited amount of time to play)
- feeling to be "evaluated" not for the development of the character but of how the character behaves within the framework of the faction
- feeling to be forced to create a character who will have to be "built-up" to fall in the guidelines of the faction
- feeling that, if you lose your reference DM (the one/s who follow the development of your character/plotline more closely) little will move forward

If the DMs keep pushing factions like this, things will probably change soon. It's just about changing the playerbase and their perceptions of what the Factions are all about. Apps are the easy part. Providing you have the right leverage.
Plus, some DMs are just always going to have the stigma of being unapproachable by alot of the newer people. You know who you are.

No one is required to follow a script. In fact, the application isn't a script, its a demonstration that you understand what DMs want out of faction characters. If you can show that, we don't care how you go about doing it in game.

We actually expect that your character WILL have personal character goals. Those goals should probably align with, but should not over lap the factions. Yes, you should pursue the faction's goals as well–but do it in a way that makes sense to your individual character.
There's no worse application than the one that focuses exclusively on faction goals; since that implies there is nothing unique or interesting about your PC; instead you're telling us you want to play one of the generic NPCs in the faction and do all the generic things those NPCs do all day.

Faction characters have an expected role on the server. We give players perks and major advantages, and extra DM attention–in return--you work within the framework of the faction.
So while its a legitimate feeling, it misses the entire point of factions.

Not sure what you mean there.

That's true for any character. However, another aspect of the Faction character is this: in return for perks, extra DM attention (when available), free loot, etc., you're being asked to demonstrate an ability to propel plotlines and adventures along without a DM following you closely all the time.

Some interesting points, I'm really interested in dispelling some of the stranger 'myths' about the application process and how factions work.
The application is designed to give DMs an idea of what you want to do and how you'll do it. What are your general plans for creating adventures and intrigues without a DM's constant oversight? We don't expect you to treat it like a script, but use it as an opportunity to show us you will do the kinds of things we find improves the server for everyone–which is why we'll then trust you with additional authority, perks, power, and privileges.
Factions are designed to help further DM and PC storylines and plots along even when a DM is not online to actively push it. In that regard, PCs are being trusted to act as proxies for the DM controlled NPCs–pursuing the NPC's goals in tandem to the PC's own character development and goals. In return for this we'll trust you with additional authority, perks, power, and privileges.

Not every character wants to be a leader and from what ive seen and read thats what dm's want from faction players.
Join faction X push it's goals and inspire others to do things..If a character isn't a leader type then this isn't going to happen and they don't get anywhere with the faction.
This is also true if the player dosent have much playtime as getting things done becomes a problem and you get so far out of the loop that keeping track just becomes hard work and no fun.
The applications serveral players (Myself inclueded)can't be bothered typing one out im not the best at typing so thats my reason.That and doing things ingame should be how to get in as that is playing the game writing applications isn't.
What player want from factions.
One word really.
FUN.
Thats it if the faction dosent provide different ways to have fun politics,PvP,adventure etc…For all those involved then players are going to get bored with it. -
As a suggestion for DM to try and catch more people in factions: control some of the NPCs, make them walk the roads of the City, make them go on small quests with PC groups, spread their ideas/credos/part of their goals. At the end the NPCs might even ask some of the participants to join the factions… (yes, don't leave it just to the Faction member after a sending, control the NPC and go on questing with the group, doing little or much depending on what you wish!).
I imagine everyone would be thrielled to go in a crypt with Thul de Prestic, or to go harvesting some weird herb with GuildMaster Maleen. For sure PCs won't have to expect that their prestigious team-members would take them out of trouble if they encounter troubles.This would take up lots of your (DM) time but, I am sure, would give many existing characters the chance to enter in a faction with a "direct sponsorship" and a stronger driver than to create a new character or to write up a simple application.

I think taking the adventuring spot light away from the players isn't a good thing. I do think that having more visibility of the NPC faction leaders would be a positive thing. Even if it is the occasional sending.
IE, Bill the fighter hears sendings that match up with his lie of thinking and he thinks, yeah, that might be someone I would want to follow.
Or, Jim the mage encounters so and so and decides, yes, I think that group is the perfect cover for my secret plot to bring back the old mushroom gods!
In my opinion we wouldn't need a bunch more presence to help interest, just a little bit more.

A big thing for me, when joining this, or any faction. The ammount of awesome RP involved and RPers involved. I've never had so much fun interacting with people before.

Pushing your own agenda or secret plans in a faction is not too hard to do if you sent an application for those required DM things. Without an application good luck reaching your goals by in game actions. There is just too much going on it seems for the DMs or the most active DM to notice. By submitting an application you have the chance of every DMs look at your goal and maybe one of them will help you in game. If they don't, well you still let them know what you wanted and got attention. Oh, and pay attention to question 5 and 7 I believe in the application process, it seems these are key.
Not being in a faction, you still not going to reach your goals any easier. You can have a lot of friends and such, but if a DM does not know what you want, you still not going to reach those special goals. So, if it really doesn't affect your character views do it and gain the perks. Joining a faction might even give you things to put in question 5 and 7 to get approved!

The problem with me is that I keep my characters without any set goals, only general ideas drive them.
This is a problem I am having with my current character actually, he was made with the singular goal of becoming a dragonslayer. Now hes done that im feeling bored, yes im accumulating loot, gold and xp but that isnt the point is it? A character needs a path to follow with a long term goal and I feel thats the major thing a dm faction provides by requiring an application.
Your character will never be short of goals if you made that app because youve taken a good deal of time to think them through and included goals that you can begin straight away from the moment your character starts and will see you through to the end whether they are political, adventuring or a mixture of the two.
The application process isnt something I find easy either ive had several knocked back applications but rather than disheartening me its made me try harder to think them through in future.
