PvP: Your status after participating in a group attack.

I thought i'd bring this up to a degree since people seem to not realize this for the most part. I can only speak for myself but i know quite a few others feel the same way. It is regarding the infamous "gank squads". They're not only legitimate, they can also serve to make someone realize just how infamous/hated a character is.
However, it is what happens after the ganksquad, especially if it is unsuccessful. Many people who have no stakes in a pvp will jump in to attack and this is where things can get cloudy. Most of those who participate in such without stakes seem to be under the impression that the matter is over, they were simply "there" and therefor should have participated in a potentially character ending pvp. This is where the attackers and victims usually differ. I can speak for myself that those character, even if i never met them before, who participate in such a ganksquad, they become a legitimate target should the opportunity present itself.
This is where those people often feel wronged. They feel they have done nothing to deserve being attacked but sometimes don't even realize how potentially serious said pvp may have been for the victim. They're not being assholes, they simply may not realize the consequences of their actions.
The point of the matter is, think carefully before you just jump into mass pvp that has character ending consequences, especially if you have no history or stakes in it, because it may be your character that gets ended as result and so many people just don't realize this.
I made this to see how people feel about this subject and to just point out that even jumping in on FD resulting pvp can result in YOUR death.

Agree with this 100%. I am trying to make it fun when I attack people, but if you are forcing my character's hand, it will get nasty if we win.
Players also have the right to defend their assets and even potential PvM encounters versus other players.
Being a criminal is super high risk, we don't have to worry about just dying or losing some gold or potions, a failed encounter can result in complete character death and the end of a concept.
This was something I did not realize until I stepped into one of those concepts, and it's mellowed me out as a player quite a bit, as in the past I was one of those players who acted contrary to what Citizen Bane has suggested.
-
I've jumped in to a PvP riot, and was not at all upset or surprised that I died. Don't go into the mosh pit if you don't want to get kicked :)
-
Don't poke the bear if you are not ready to get bit if/when things go wrong. But you should be fine with getting bit, really. Its a video game, the teeth don't really hurt you personally.
-
Players should be really careful as an OOC courtesy to either:
- clear spawns
- OOC help up
- OOC heal
Or all three. This should almost be an enforced rule to avoid unwanted and lame NPC death.
-
I like this 'Don't poke the bear' thing.
If you participate in a squad out to get a wanted criminal, and the person who is leading the squad has enough RP to potentially end in FD - and if you're hunting down a character with FD as the intention, it's most likely that you're in such a party - you automatically assume the highest common denominator Storyline.
This means, basically, that you just randomly jumped into a FD event.
-
If people legitimately think that being part of a murder-mob isn't grounds to be murdered themselves, there's a very easy solution:
Educate them otherwise.

Drawing a head in a shallow grave is quite an illustration for your point.

By joining in on a mob pvp, you're by default accepting a willingness to do it to someone else, so be ready for someone to do it to you. What comes around and all that.

edited part of what I posted above.
with respect to mass pvp gank squads I am in agreement with the above statements.

If you got a problem with PvP feeling unfair, contact a DM. Don't take it out on the forums.
Posts in regards of the relevant event has been taken aside for the DMs to investigate.

If you fight in a location that is exceedingly dangerous, such as nearby npcs spawns, while it is often best to clear them out, and ensure the loser does not die afterwards, this isn't always possible. Twice I know I have been forced to run prematurely because more people were showing up that could not be handled. This resulted in the downed person being left to die.
Fighting in a dangerous area such as a graveyard or the ruins should have players keeping the possibility of this in mind.
-
Tie up the downed person and use them as a hostage to buy safe passage out if more people come. Tell them if they attack the hostage dies.

Nothing of the sort on my behalf, this was just being discussed on irc the other day and some people were under the impression that it was unfair to jump them later if they participated in such an attack/pvp

A bit of thought from the peanut gallery. I was watching Penny Dreadful the other day. Long story short, group of marshalls excort a criminal. Gang of criminals walk in, kill all the marshalls. A woman on the train, looks up an says "You wouldnt kill an innocent woman, would you?". They leave her be, but run off with the criminal. I see CoA much the same way. If a group of scum walk into your bar, hunting someone, and engage in PvP infront of you, if you do not move, but merely watch, staying the hell silent, and keeping to yourself, they should not kill you. Even if it is a CE murder scum squad, it isnt a good story if they murder every person they meet.
Point of the story is indeed, dont poke the bear, but at the same time, do not go out of your way to kill just for the sake of it. If a Lynch mob goes out to hunt you, and when they spot you, several members of said party throw down their weapons, yelling "YIELD, YIELD", let them RP the fear, and realization that you, the criminal, arent worth them risking their lives, and they value their own hides more than getting to participate in sharing your loot when you die.
CB for instance, allowed me to survive several encounters like so across the span of time, because, while going out to find him is more fun than staying in the spire looking at Thune or Verk being AFK, my character valued their own hide far more than they did turning in his villain.I suppose my rambling comes down to, if you find yourself in the situation described above, letting your character be SCARED, showing said fear, making said character stay out of the fighting, is usually a good way to get out of it alive. HOWEVER! If you participate, then yes, you are in that scene, and every other scene henceforth, a valid victim for precisely the same punishment as you sought to place upon another.

@verkosh:

I have never, ever, seen a hostage situation work. Why? Because raises exist. The fd mob will pile on, kill the convict, and just raise the victim afterwords. It's shitty, but unless a dm rules otherwise, that is what always happens.
-
I have seen it work, but as said, I get fed up by people taking hostages when we can FD the person in question's ass and just raise the hostage afterwards, preventing them from causing further chaos.
-
hostage situations only work if all the players are willing to rp and talk.
this probably needs some ooc coordination
-
Easy enough to shift people to evil for purposefully letting a hostage die.
-
I've seen one hostage taking work well. Two villainous groups came together (about 7 of us in total) and took 10-15 Mage Guild and other PCs hostage to secure the release of one of their own men from the Sherriffs.
It's do-able, but alas relies on the mechanical power and ability of the hostage takers as well as the willingness of the other side to play along and not murder their own ally as they try to beat the Big Bad.
However, if you have to raise the hostage afterwards, you didn't really save them…
