Earn in Game positions/prestige classes etc
-
Weapon master is actually kind of tough to earn, to an extent. But essentially, you just need to earn prestige, in the thing that relates to the class.
Just be the best class you can be and it will happen. Push hard, adventure, do stuff as a Tormite that makes sense (without looking like you're trying too hard…) and it will happen.
Surprisingly, during the Kanthea plot, no one I saw tried to earn a warlock pact with the demon side. Would have been the perfect time to do so. Sometimes metaplots are begging to dish out PrCs or pacts or perks if a player can think outside the box and take it.

It happened.

I usually end up seeking to do EIG concepts, but often get bummed out when I see someone get approved right off the bat with perks far better than what I could ever dream of. But I concur, that it is far too difficult to earn most stuff. Mostly because the average concept seems to last around 2-3 months. If you work your ass off to become a knight (my current character for instance), for a month or two before a dm even as much as takes an interest if at all, in what you are doing, you become a knight, but have shit idea what to do with it. Someone might then say, aim higher, but the times that I have done so on CoA, especially since the wipe, I have been bummed out about it.
Me and Glow were made dukes of Old Town back in the day, for doing awesome shit. We felt honoured, and tried to run with it. But we never made it past that.Without sounding like a depressed bunny, which I am not, I end up taking paladin levels to make me appear more like a divine champion, rather than aim for the PrC, because I have no idea how to "earn it", and I am not going to spend 2 months chasing something I doubt i can accomplish anyhow.

I made the concept I'm on right now because it is fun for me to play it. If I accomplish anything personal or earn anything personal, its icing, but the character is what I wanted to play, not the goal. I think you should write your goals, not as an actual goal, but as your character's dreams and motivations. In real life we do things because we have a dream or some kind of motivation and as such, so should your character. Plan real dreams instead of OOC goals and you'll keep alot more stamina. I'm not going to detail them, however, all of my current app character's goals are his MOTIVATIONS in life and not actual things I want to change OOC. Because I made his goals this way, there is no pressure. I just have to play my character and things will happen naturally instead of trying to force things. Make a character based off something you want to play every day, and plan goals around that characters motivations. Then, even if you don't get anything, you still enjoy logging in regardless and don't get burned out.
RL Example: Went to a professional leadership course and we always made fun of the "Wood Chucks" (people who overly pursue the award "AKA Wooden Plaque") instead of focusing on the real goal of the training. Three of us worked together to ignore the whole wood chuck mentality and we got alot more out of the course than if we were stressed about getting that award. When they called up the names of the award winners at graduation, the three of us where shocked because we won instead of the wood chucks. The reason is because we focused on the training and the experience instead of on the achievement and the reward came later. That's how I'm going to be looking at positions, classes, and perks from now on so its a nice thing that comes with the role play instead of the REASON I role play.

I find I am never disappointed when I let the environment shape my pc. I have ever only been disappointed when I actually have a goal up front. Like earning an ig perk. There a re a couple of folks who have longer term pcs than I do. But in general I like the slow burning take what comes along approach better than I want that. Just me

I can tell you're having fun - you /bring/ fun.
But yeah! I find it's much more satisfying to have IC dreams/aspirations than it is to have OOC goals. Manymany OOC goals can get ground to paste under the wheels of Server Plot, and if your PC doesn't have IC motivations, that can kill your stamina. But having IC motivations for "getting up in the morning" can lead to all sorts of nifty interactions and stories, even if server events seem to be pushing hard, even when there's no DM DMing, or shock even when your usual buddies all seem to be offline.
ADDED: Sorry, didn't mean to derail, and I sure didn't mean to say players shouldn't have goals. I do, however, think that working on "IC dreams/aspirations" is really helpful for when you have to (and you WILL have to) roll with the punches that get thrown at you, while you're on your EiG path.

Getting off topic here. Thread isn't really about whether you should have goals or not.
To get it back closer to topic.
Earning things is accomplished by doing stuff. Doing stuff is easiest if you've thought about about what you want to do, and how to do it - basically, if you've set goals. In general, people should be trying to do stuff, as this is what makes the server come alive. Everyone should have something they are trying to do, at a pace and in a style that is fun for them. Different playstyles are fine, but in general, everyone should have some kind of goal they are working on. What kind of events can you run? How can you use the tools available to players to tell interesting stories and involve people? This is why on apps, we make you tell us what your goals are. I highly suggest people fill out "applications" for their non-app characters, because going through the thought process involved in an app can help make your PC more successful.
If you want to earn a PrC, think about HOW you can do it. Talk to DMs or other players who have earned similar stuff. Most importantly, make sure the DM team knows about your progress, either by talking to them in IRC, a forum PM, or using the player plot forum. You have to be your own advocate, we are probably not aware of everything your PC has done. In general, we LIKE giving out rewards. It makes us feel warm and fuzzy. But they HAVE to be earned and we have to KNOW you earned it.

All I needed to do to get Divine Champion of Corellon was to have Loonaya and Maureens elven characters feed me grapes whilst I lay on a bed of silk and talked about how good Corellon was. For real though, constant communication with the DM team or DM handling your storyline is your best bet for advancement. It's not hard, a little tedious at times, but not hard.

If your EiG goal is Mount Everest, you'll have to attain a lot of smaller peaks before you reach the summit. Try breaking your goal down into those sub-peaks. Achieve a sub-peak and you get a Win. It's a smaller win on the way to your final summit, but its a Win, you see progress, you get satisfaction from achieving something, you'll likely give pleasure to other players in the process and by giving pleasure to other players, you'll attract the attention of the DMs, who'll be looking for those PCs that are entertaining others.
Ask anyone who has achieved something big and worthwhile in life, and most likely, they'll tell you a tale of joy of reaching all the smaller peaks they aimed for in the process, how these peaks encouraged them on, and of all the people they met along the way.
Talk to anyone who failed to achieve their life's goal and they'll probably just talk for hours about that one summit way off in the distance that never seems to get any closer, how every time they climbed a ridge, another higher peak came into view with a huge valley in between, and also of how unfair life is.

I agree, bigger goals seem much more managable if broken down into smaller steps

I was working toward promotion within and before anything could happen my char was taken out by enemies of the state, and it irked the hell out of me because i had put so much work into the char to have it written off so easily by other pcs plots. It would have been much better in my opinion if someone had taken five minutes to let me know something might happen, so I didnt get the feeling that my time wasnt as important as someone elses.

Falonthas, from what I remember you were already an Agent and had just murdered an ally of many people on team evil, as well as egging on every criminal on the server. You got assassinated during a DM event where a few players led an assault on the city. It was just IC for IC.

Also, you (or a dm, with prior consent from you) are the only one(s) who can end your story.
