General opinion and discussion on Alt/s
-
I know many of us stick with one character and only one character but there are others on the server perhaps their low levels on or people want to take a break from their main or even want to play a second character or more i was curious what the general opinion is on alternative characters?
-
I fully 100% believe that ALTS are okay, if they don't get involved in any plots, Server-wise, or character wise.
Sometimes you NEED to just grind quests…. >_>
I have alts on different accounts though, so for one, I don't flood my own, and for two, others don't know who I am (unless I tell them) so they don't give me any special treatment or anything.
My two cents in a half cent.

I use to have tons of alts… and when I'd log on... I'd say to myself "How am I feeling today? Do I want to play a happy go lucky person? A moody person? A vengeful person?" and then I'd log on to whoever fit the catagory... But for the sake of simplicity, I have been sticking to one main and going to pull through with her.

Alts are detrimental to you as a player and the overall health of the server- but only in the same way a common cold is. If you want to waste your time with an alt, time that could be otherwise spent pushing plots and making awesome, feel free.
-
because of low players base at certain times, and lack of coordination between players /faction members, i feel having characters in a range of levels, that can play a number of roles, that could support other players and factions as well, and perhaps even ones you don't mind losing (creating drama and leaving some wealth to other players) makes having alts useful sometimes.
however, with limited time, alt, or just having lots of characters, can mean… less character development, less time to be involved with the plots and players your are involved with, etc.
focus is often the essence of 'doing' much; wholeness is often the essence of understanding (read 'holism', or seeing the interconnectedness of all things, and recursive feedback loops, etc)if the server is busy enough, or your character will rp and quest with anybody in any faction, then you might be able to get by with just the one character.
high level spellcasters/ merchants seem like good support alts, especially if related to a faction, because they can bring the faction income while you afk selling stuff, you can buff other groups that need it, and otherwise help the faction/ others with supplies when necessary.
-
I rolled up an Alt because I was bored with my main. I may or may not bring him back.
Right now I'm having so much more fun with Caylee that She has become the Main focus for me.
The hardest thing about an alt, or any new main for that matter , is remembering that any friends you had
are no longer your friends, and you are going to have to build a new circle. Fortunately,
Caylee's Hook is that she is very friendly, outgoing, willing to say hi to any one, and she has already gotten into the
Silver Watch, as a Watchman.I had made a couple of other alts, which I never went back to after one or to rounds of questing with them. Did not feel like good characters to me, and did not want to get bogged down in another potential wand grinder.
-
You can have as many alts as you like, but they can't be in player factions, be agents or app characters. Cause that would count as metagaming. If you got alts for just RP and questing, that is fine, lots of people do that :) Course if you spend more time on your alt(s) than your main character you may be asked to make that your main, as it would be unfair on the player faction and it is frowned upon if the main is an agent or app character.
-
Playing alts is entirely fine, we have no problem with them whatsoever, it would be crazy if we did. However, an alt is an alt, and cannot join any organisation on any level.
If you have more than one character in more than one faction/sponsorship, player or otherwise, and don't explain which one you want to play as, then I'll just delete one of them for you.
Playing multiple characters in various organisations isn't just frowned on, it's metagaming. If after having a character deleted for doing this, you do it again, it will be a vault wipe. We really don't expect to have to ban anyone for it.
-
Well, it kinda… surprises me. Despite playing here since a while. Do I miss a rules section, or something?
-
Alts are fun and easy, that's cool. It is also not cool. Altos can feed into that compulsive urge to resist non-fun work for your characters. I have several alts, but, they generally sit in the wings waiting for a main to die or retire so I have a jumping off point. Mains are awesome for everyone, alts are just a little fun for a little while for everyone. Then forgotten.
-
I don't have any alts, myself, but in the middle of the night, when nobody is on, I always consider making one just to run lowbie quests alone–see how far I can make it before dying. But, then by the time I'm ready to do so, people start logging on in the morning and the idea is forgotten.
I would say, at least in my case, Alts would be a great way to test out classes and character types that I haven't played on NWN before. (Or practice playing a spellcaster without accidentally setting my party on fire!)
-
My opinion is i get into a alt idea and want to kill my mains less then 48 hours after making them if that the case
-
I have alts just so I can interact over the different timezones and different moods
Shaedo is my main, but when its a bad day I want to just runaround not think and smash stuff
the good thing is none of my chars are part of a group
-
I played an alt briefly yesterday as an ooc courtesy to the one other person on the server. They had lost a bunch of xp and wanted to quest to make some of it back. My main(who had already extensively RPed with their character earlier) was not in level range.
-
see that's where they come in handy
-
What about taking breaks from your main like you wanna play but not your main for like a couple weeks?
-
A couple weeks is a long break. If you are running an alt for that long, I'd have his entire life planned out until he died. Also, do not join any factions.
-
It's fine to take a break and play other characters, but if you intend to return to a 'main' character who is embroiled in various conflicts and intrigues, then don't get involved in anything related to those with any of your alternative break characters. Or I'll delete them.
-
While I'm of the same oppinion as Spiffy I wouldn't restrict the server from alts as some ppl just play nwn like they would diablo 3 or WoW, since they don't have one or more of these; Time, interest and guts. There are also those who just like to try new builds here and there…
For me there's nothing more frustrating than seeing a player switch chars every week or so, particularly when they're participating in plots. I find it no different than metagaming and oocly I know there's little fun in them as you can't incorperate them in your plots as they may switch to another char the next day, which makes me avoid them as much as possible. Also their rp tend to be lacking as they can never be real fleshed out.
That aside it seems most players who do, know they can't participate in plots and just keep themselves to the small rp they have (small as in no plots but just talk about weather and quests)

Is this explained anywhere for new/inexperienced players?
Because I know finding this out the hard way, would really piss me off. Enough to leave the server and bad mouth it to anyone who asks about the server.
The point is, doing this kind of shit could erode your playerbase of 'non-hardcore' gamers; 'hard-core gamers' read 'everybody playing who already knows each other and is friends offline so they use the game as a way to hang out and socialize'.
I'm not really sure why the hard-nosed attitude - do people really use and abuse this? It's not really something I know about, or why zool would resort to threatening players with deleting their characters without warning.
