Just my Opinion

the bottom line is in order to revive is you have to first die
wipe the damn server vaults, people who cry so much saying they will leave said they would leave before and are still here.
any of us who have played for 10 years here or more have seen at least 2 wipes. you know whats the best thing about a wipe, that line on the road of naked people who have to be IC while they are naked and vulnerable to everything.
no one with an advantage of gear or friend or anything, everyone at even keel and then we explore fresh. howso, new char is new eyes.
and if you want to remake your char go ahead, but don't cry and have a tantrum cause your char gets wiped that you spent so many hours on. one I can think of no one likes to play around because hes beyond an arrogant pain in the ass who doesn't listen when given dm hooks.
this is a game, yes we have lost some of the fun because we got too serious about players creating adventure and intrigue. according to the books, yes the books that everyone has forgotten exist, the dms set the stage, and the player work with what is presented.
what is our goal ? very simple we are adventurers looking for fortune and glory, be it good or evil.
the city is our stage, lets wipe it clean and get ready for a new opening day and not have hissy fits over a virtual avatar.
-
What I think would be exciting if plots had more impact on the server and made people react.
Like say bugbears attack the city and get beaten off once but give hooks they plan to attack again.
Now players could plan a defence or go and find a way to defeat the monsters before they attack.
But if it just gets ignored the monsters attack and perhaps siege the city eventually taking a district or two if they still get ignored and no one tries to break the siege.
It definitely adds more excitement if things are seen to be a credible threat and that it can be ignored and npcs will save the day

What killed it for me was how so many people were unable to seperate IC from OOC, the incredible negativity on forums and irc, the "wimpiness" of the pvp rules and attitudes. Everyone wanted to act like the toughest guy in town but when someone called their bluff, the usual cry fest started.
So much potential but it's all wrapped in bubble wrap to make nothing happens to people's characters and no feelings get hurt and that everyone gets their epic endings. Sorry, but if epic endings happen to everyone they stop being epic and just become endings. Sometimes you're just found dead in a ditch because you fucked over the wrong people etc….

I'm planning on making 90% of my future events perma death. Guess that will suit both bane and Verk. Though Bane dont play no more unfortunately :(

Well.. If only Bane's characters will be able to survive those it would be a bummer. :P

if i can suggest one thing dm zool, is that you never post comment as such, no dm should openly admit he intend to kill about 50 % of the server characters with 90% of his game to be perma death, Ad&D i s a game to have fun, to have a character fitting for their own ego, playing in a fantasy world, is to and many people a way to get out ordinary life, to have a character we like and come to appreciate, i understand the basis of life and death, in such setting, and that no one is above death, but as a dm myself, i would never seek the death of my players to suit the need of others who whine about it, as you will soon find out, less players willing to play your scenario, myself just reading your post , make me feel like, ohhh zool is online.. time to log out, and that is counter productive to this server low player count.
can we not just have fun, and stop all the whinning about other characters please, play YOUR character as you see them fit, and leave other character play their part as they see fit, hey you dont like my character, no worry, seek me out and try to pvp me, that would be acceptable for me, if good IG reason behind, if not, then stop whinning about my or others character way of play.
it is just my opinion that constant whinning is getting everyone pretty tired now a day, it is becoming insidious, and slowly eating away anyone will to play, there is too many post here about whining and myself did some in the past wich i now regret, and now i try to be more constructive, and try to accept dm view in some circumstance, we should all do the same…. for the sake of a wealthy experience
easy to resume, bad experience = leaving the server for another one, good experience = staying here and trying harder to achieve great things.

I rather suspect he was joking. And if not, it is still your choice to go on such event.
nothing wrong with permadeath event, unless it's designed and set forth so you have absolutely no excuse not to be there, and it's a 5-minute slam-dunk your all dead, nothing you can do. -
I wasn't suggesting more permadeath. That would just drive off the more casual players.
-
I'd be all for it. People complain about lack of real heroes. That's because there's a lack of both true danger and challenge. D&D -IS- fun and being challenged is fun. Also the part:
"hey you dont like my character, no worry, seek me out and try to pvp me, that would be acceptable for me, if good IG reason behind, if not, then stop whinning about my or others character way of play."
See the part 'IF GOOD REASON BEHIND IT'. And if my reason didn't satisfy you, you'd likely be unhappy with the experience because you felt it wasn't a good enough reason. Well, shit happens.. or shit used to happen. Now we need to fill out forms and application and get both parties to agree for the event JUST TO START A FIGHT! Ugh.
-
by ig reason i mean…. and easy to understand... if your cahracter is a maniac that kill all that move, like a psychotic, then it would be ig to do so, if on the other hand your character isnt a psycho killer, then killing someone over trivial matter is quite occly, you are quite twisting my words to suit your own opinion on this, IG matter would mean you stay in your character when acting.
-
Fair enough. And no, not twisting, misunderstanding.
-
cool, misunderstanding, is something i can live without being a prick about it :)
thank you for the clarification Cit.B -

Lol.. I'm planing to PERMANENT kill all them important Arabel npcs DMS use when they ''play'' …. You know i can do it... i already did... ..
what ? you dont like my joke ?? . hahahaha.. am laughing so much.. i can not stop.... ......shrugs..
ho.. About killing peoles without good IC reason.. i think CaptAdoksti... want to said was about Dms.. who kill peoples for some OOC reason.. as . there to much high level on the server or . this character still alive for anuf time... etc.. but . i can missunderstanding too ..
-
Oh i agree with you on the fact that some epic things should lead to Permadeath. But then again DM's normally already do make such events Permadeath like fighting a dragon or trying to assisnate an important NPC
-
I'm afraid there is no reason for anyone to take part in a permadeath event unless it's closely tied to character's own goals.
So to make permadeath events viable you have to involve every character in the overarching plot. And I'm not talking about "we must risk our lives now or everyone dies". Because ironically the only way they can die is attending the event. -

Because ironically the only way they can die is attending the event.Sorta stating the obvious that it's a matter of playing your character, not your character sheet.
going along to stop a lich's ascendence ritual to deity-hood that involves them sacrificing the whole city may well interest some Helmite paladin, even if they were not directly involved. That paladin may well decide it's worth the 99% chance of death.
Even though "stopping Lich ascendence" was not on the agenda of goals the player had down for the character.Yet, many others may well decide to let someone else do it.
And, Sadly, of course, for some it will be a strictly OOC decision - "What DM is running it, do I expect it to be 20%, 50%, 70% chance, and how does that percentage compare to what I know about that DMs history of handing out awesome loot". -
Whoa, sorry guys, didn't mean to bug anyone. If I ever run a perma death event (don't think I ever have actually, though I have applied the permanent death to a character after an event a different DM ran who didnt have time to apply it.) then I'd say it's perma death before the event, and anyone who wants to go along can, if not, cool no problem, I'd also do my best to balance it appropriately to the event, and I raise people if I accidently spawn a level 20 drow assassin when it was meant to be a level 6 goblin with a big sack of loot! I wasn't saying I was going to go round killing everyone and saying 'haha! no respawn sucker!' that'd be nuts! :) We dont kill people for OOC reasons either.
-
sorry Zool, i might have jumped on concusion a bit early…. :P

I've been on one perma-death event so far. The DM said in advance it will be perma-death, as it was meant to be the conclusion of something.
Guess what, my character died, actually he got hit by a death-spell from the evil guy he was chasing fanatically.
Everyone else lived, earned loot as far as I'm aware, and when the bad guy escaped with the help of PCs, it surprised even the DM, and he bothered to find my forum account, and sent me a PM that I can respawn/get raised by allies if I want, as it turned out not to be the conclusion of the plot.I decided to stay dead (no, it wasn't easy, it took me 2 days :) ), and I'm totally content with the decision and how the DM handled the situation, INCLUDING casting the death-spell, as it made my silly tune a hero of his people. (They probably never learned though, as they were enslaved by the bad guy in a remote desert, so… )
In short, perma-death sometimes fine.
On the other hand, I'd been heartbroken if the others had died on the mission, loosing characters for following my character's agenda. So I'd be fine with events where my char risk permanently dieing as a logical conclusion of a plot, but others, less involved in the plot, risk but some XP, and gold. -
I m still here and still having fun, granted it is always more fun where there are more people around
the last couple weeks i have not been able to devote as much time as i would like, but i am still coming in and looking for and willing to share in fun, shoot me a tell, i will make it a point to drop what i am doing and have fun with who ever needs it
I play Eliane mostly now, but i still do come in with Rav, if that is you flavor for fun, I will play the app character more obviously, but if someone wants me to bring in Rav for fun, i will do so as well.
I have never had a problem finding things to do when i am alone, and with new safeguards in place. so that i am RPing all the time, and making sure every NPC creature and person is to be treated like they are observing me, it has actually added to my fun, if you want i can and will teach those techniques to anyone, shoot me a tell when you see me
This server has less people, but it is still fun if you look around
