Seconded. Tridents are cool. They're not great mechanically though.
Basically they're worse than spears in every way despite spears being simple and tridents being martial. They weigh more, do the same damage, have a x2 crit rather than x3 and don't do anything special.
I'm not sure what would make tridents better that would be balanced. My first thought was adding the disarm ability, same as whips have. I don't know if that works, because then there would be a disarm weapon that doesn't require the exotic weapon prof feat. Whips still have the benefit of being finessable though, so maybe that would still be fine?

Massive criticals could make them pretty much spear like.

IMO it makes sense to add disarm feat.

Are enough people going to use them to make them worth the effort of adding the items to the palette adding 6-10 lines of code for each type to the script? (iron, copper, bronze, silver-coated, titanium tipped = 30-60 lines of code)
People asked for short spears & mauls, I added short spears & mauls, no one makes short spears & mauls. Echo is sad she spent time working on something that no one will ever use.

In all honesty, I might make an alt that uses them but that would probably be it.
Also I would love to make a maul fighter at some point. I'm just very busy with work and have a ton of character ideas already that I haven't had the time to play. So that may not be enough of an incentive to add tridents.

How about a suggestion to change tridents in general?
Make them all better across the board. I know it's been done elsewhere.
Update the template or something so that when they spawn they have better base stats?

There's not really a "template" to update as such. There's likely a way by modifying the haks, would take a while to decide on specifics, then figure out exactly how to modify the 2da's etc.
Could be done.
Generally though (generally!) if I make a trident as loot, I will give it more properties than say, a greatsword (or even a spear)

That would make them on par with Halberd but not quite as good without the piercing and slashing damage types. Seems suitable for a martial weapon.
