      I feel like a lot of people are talking about different things when they say "I would like, or perhaps feel others, should get more recognition". To me, recognition is really any DM attention, but my expectations are lowest of low, and shouldn't reflect the general feelings and desires of the server population. DMs and Players, what is recognition to you?

        If the occasional app goes through when I submit one for a private or something and they acknowledge that I am allowed to play them, per example. I think that's recognition. Or maybe that's all the recognition I want because generally, with the amount of power DMs wield I actually am always afraid of them, so my post here might not be the best description.

          The best recognition I get from playing is the one I get from other players. The occasional tells of "Your character is awesome" are the essence for me, and make me keep on playing. I do my best to return said recognition whenever someone else impresses me with their approach. DM recognition is only really a minor bonus that comes very rarely for me, and thats not really a necessity to make me feel valuable as a player. Its you guys! <3

              Yep! At the same time, regardless of how successful a pc of mine may be, I appreciate when the dm's are willing to work with me on a project, goal, or plot. The consequences, and any reqards thereof are bonus'.

                Great recognition, comes with a few things:

                1. Characters reacting to what my PC does/says, regardless whether it is hostile or not.
                2. Tells, usually from DMs or PCs commenting on something I did, like "Hey, thanks for rolling with that mugging, that was awesome!" or similar things.
                3. Unique quests that happen mid scripted quest. I think the spice of having a DM watching you and then suddenly spawning a bunch of lizard folk to complicate things makes for great recognition, because I would assume they would only do that if you are actively roleplaying and not just grinding.

                I like recognition in small, humble parts, because they add up over time and mean a lot to me. I'm the type of person that likes to play supporting roles, so a lot of time even if my character isn't the 'hero', even the smallest, most minute recognition goes a long way. That's not to say I wouldn't mind bigger accolades, it's just something I'm not actively looking for. I could make an impact on the game from the shadows or in the shadow of another character and be completely fine with seeing just the results, even if no one else knows who did it.

                  What Lunatichigh said. I generally do not have the non-playing time to create/push any plots of significance, although i greatly enjoy doing what I can to assist others via in-game rp.
                  I also have for whatever reason, a low amount of self-assertion, so generally would not reach out to dms for assistance with a plot.
                  due to my recognition of that, and that my contribution is mostly that of RP/setting-feel as opposed to setting-CHANGE, I find any recognition to be wonderful.

                    Perhaps its a cultural thing, but I find it hard to observe observe success in other people without trying to replicate the "formula" that they are using. I would likely attempt to replicate such success and generally fail. Oddly enough, I have been told to "cut it out" by a DM when I tried to copy another player's successful formula. So it just seemed to me at the time that there were different standards.

                    It generally annoys me when only flagship characters get rewarded, when other characters contributed significantly or as much to the plot. I also utterly hate the selfish nature of some plots to go solely for the "win" For example, when Kraegus Thune rescued a fricking Dragon and was being offered all the glory, I immediately singled out SinisterPlank's PC for reward and recognition, resulting in a special weapon being made for him. When K. Thune was offered a hand-made plot to run by DMs, I offered it to one of the new and struggling players to run it rather than grab hold of it and just "win".

                    On a another level, the Permadeath Event run during the end of the Dracohorn plotline, when most of the long-term players died fighting a Dracolich. The survivors would be heavily rewarded. One became a War Wizard, the other Lord Warden of the Militia. The dead PCs's players were offered a minor item as a reward for fighting and dying, while being mentioned in a memorial. I very much like the idea of a minor item as a reward for permadeath during an event. Most Permadeaths come at the end of a long plotline, and it seems to be that in an equitable server, the ones who won't be getting a reward with their current PC, should get one on their next PC.

                      the ones who won't be getting a reward with their current PC, should get one on their next PC.

                      How does that make any sense? Your last character did cool things so the next one will get cool things happen to them? Everyone makes crappy characters/ideas at times, rewarding them just because of past success is a steep road to giving the whole server an "elitism" feel and have anyone else think the DMs are playing favourites.

                        Let's knock this line of thought off right meow. It has happened in the past, just as he mentioned, and perhaps may happen again. Having a desire for that is alright. In this instance, it makes sense because precedent has already been set. Ya know?

                          Doesn;t make sense to me either to be honest. That's the kind of stuff that happens in "rogue like" games, where each character gains advantages based on the actions of the previous one. Not really how this place (should) work. I would say.

                            I suppose it doesn't, but it's happened. I imagine lots of things happen here, but I'm more looking for people's ideas of what something (recognition) is. Not opinions on one person's idea. This thread is to show how different (or not different) the ideas of DM recognition are.

                              I have recieved recognition for my actions in various ways from personalised items that have my characters name on them (awesome )to 'you took part in the event' loot and though these are valued the ultimate recognition for me has been recieving tells and pms from other players/dms appreciating my characters either for their personality and they way they are portrayed rather than their mechanical prowess.

                              another form of recognition that i have to cite also is one for the dms, when they fix the bugs we complain about to ensure that our time here is enjoyable and create new scripts to allow us to pursue the wierd things we want! though they dont do this for any specific one of us, it is a form of appreciation of all that play here i think.

                              eg. the death switch script, the reading placable languages bug, the writing tools, the entire crafting system, not to mention all the alterations and class themes that we now have.

                                  I agree with some others on this post. The ultimate form of recognition is when a fellow player, especially one you're not OOCly buddies with sends you a tell that says something like "Hey thanks, your character is making mine more fun to play."

                                  Loot, levels, PrCs, RP tokens, fancy rewards and whatever all pale in comparison.

                                  Don't forget to do this for your fellow players - If you think someone's PC is cool, telling them will make their day.

                                  stevelichman: When i get in pvp… I just generally don't even bother with my consumables, I just use my time more efficiently to come up with a witty one liner to use after my inevitable defeat.

                                    Yeah stuff like "You play X really well" or "cheers for that, was good fun" I always appreciate. It makes up for those crappy days where you die three times.

                                      in the past it was when a DM would shoot me a tell about something…"you sneaky minx" those are well in the past now, my play style does not mesh well with the v5 arabel and what i can do i severely limited, those kind tells were very nice, i do not get tells from dms now, unless they are responding to a question i have asked

                                      players rarely ever do that to me, so it is rather evident my playstyle is pretty bad

                                          Mostly because I have no idea what you're trying to do. Communicating with the DMs what you want as a player and for your character is the best way (for better or for worse) to get things accomplished.
