WTF!
-
Just so everyone knows, this was a bug relating to an old automated script - not a DM 'punishing' a player for not reading the forums. We're looking into it.
-
Its indeed an old script. Next time you have a problem, find a DM. Posting a rage-topic just makes you look silly. Replying to this topic with assumptions of things you have no idea about, as well.
Hope you all enjoyed the christmas special we made, nevertheless.
Cheers and let the gaming continue.

This was a bug, this script has been present for many years (and still is) on every quest in the CoA module and it is not a malicious trap I added on the christmas quest to punish players. However, there was a loophole in the script that ment occasionally people who have done the quest are slapped by mistake.
This script is now being checked and fixed.
Next time you wish to report a bug, please do so on the Bugs forum and in such a way that it encourages the DMs, who put lots of hard work in in their own free time, to fix the bug.

If it helps at all, when you "cheat" on the Crypt cleaning quest it does -Not- strip you of 3000 exp.
Now…
LMAO,
I found this entire post funny. Everyone is so hot and heavy then it turns out to be a glitch. :lol:DM's often arent ass holes in such a way, in fact I've never seen a DM do something like this, so why start now?
Though in Darks defence, I'm sure this was a "ragelight" situation and first thing he did after losing the exp was come to make this post. This happens to everyone once in a while.
Look on the bright side. The curse of the cheating exp loss (Not vary creative) will never inflict another adventurer again!

There are ways to address these problems though. We DMs are not here to deprive you of your fun, or at least we tend to think so. All we ask is a certain degree of faith in what we do, and what we script, degree of faith that certainly failed in this situation, since it was taken for granted that we had willingly introduced this new evil script.
-
the right way to do it is go through the DMs through private channels, but in this case the genie is out of the bottle, so it is a potential disaster or a major PR win depending on how it is addressed, I seen the actual event occure and wished i could have talked to the player, but seriously, a 3000 xp hit and a damning message, which scared the daylights out of me too…
it was a very harsh message that popped up for all in the vicinity to see, it was the type of message that would easily scare away a new player had they seen or were subjected to it
i think we are in the damage control and positive PR phase of this event, helping any who were victimized might help as well, i know this is not a care bear server and people have to take their lumps, but something like this i honestly feel falls outside the bounds of the rules, also i do apreciate the hard work that went into it..so much so i would have loved to try it again, the rewards were meagre so repeating it would not be in my opinion a exploit, i know for reality sake once should be all you get in it, but it was fun and interesting..worthy of a second exploration and experience..so do not blame the players, blame yourself for making it a fun experience
and i would have tried again too had i not seen the message..it scared me..so much so i gave that area a wide berth after that

At the risk of drifting off-topic, this may be the most important concept players need to get to grips with on CoA now. Nevermind adventure and intrigue, the concept of trusting the DM team to handle the setting and concerning yourself with running through its corridors instead, is I think, more important now. The reader is never made into a winner or a loser by the path of a fictional character's life. They just have the pleasure of experiencing a story they cannot predict the outcome of, where both tragedy and comedy are memorable moments and the end of one protagonist only means the continuation of the story from another's perspective.
Just as it's not fair to assume a player is intentionally trying to cheat the system whenever the trip sounds, it's unfair to assume that every misery on the server is intentional cruelty from the DMs, or indeed, from other players in the case of PvP.
Besides, CoA has never been so cuddle-bunny soft as it is now, and I don't mean the PvP rules. Unfortunately one thing it's resulted in is an increasing sense of entitlement amongst some players. The way to play CoA has always, always been to set out without any expectations. It just isn't the kind of game where you get what you expect to get, for gain or loss; that is, I would say, one of CoA's most appealing aspects, as well as the greatest cause for friction amongst players unused to such a concept - something that doesn't change with time, but with acceptance.
Try it, I highly recommend it. Don't go into a quest expecting the usual spawns or a party that works; talk to a DM if you think you've mistakenly been punished; and above all, trust the DMs to play out a setting full of immiscible characters, factions and occult powers, just as they trust players to - in line with their own preferences - create and roleplay the PCs that bring CoA to life.
-
I'm staggered that after all these years of CoA these threads still actually appear!
Don't worry DMs, there are some players who understand and LOVE you.

Look, please let me apologise unreservedly to DMs and players alike.
I had intended to apologise earlier but the topic had rightly been locked.I had no clue that this was an old script and CoA is so well built with attention to detail almost a given on any scripted event that I honestly felt as if I'd cheated the players and DMs.
I've always played my character as far as I can, totally in character at all times. That is to say I never go in the sewers or out in the wilds to farm xp or items and I've never knowingly cheated or exploited anything on the server. Any look at my char's items or statistics may give a clue as to how difficult it has been for me to attain a certain level in my given class.
The server wide message calling me a cheat and accusing me of circumventing CoAs rules hit me particularly hard as I've always prided myself on playing within the rules and within the spirit of the server.
It was a particularly harsh message with a harsh penalty and I wrongly assumed it had been built in to that Xmas quest intentionally as I'd never seen, heard or encountered it before. I then felt doubly aggrieved as the quest givers dialogue led me to believe that the quest was open to be taken again.
I totally accept that I acted and posted rashly.
It was Christmas night and I came on the server for a couple of hours of fun and within 10 minutes I'd been accused of cheating and stripped of a fair lump of experience. This made Xmas evening particularly unenjoyable and my annoyance led me to act without thinking. I was so annoyed and embarresed by the server message that I quit immediately and posted.
Had I not been so annoyed I'd have left it a day or two but I'm sorry to say that emotion got the better of me and I posted in a fit of anger.
I sincerely apologise to the DMs and builders who put so much time and effort into the server voluntarily for the enjoyment of us players . And I apologise to the players as well for opening a can of worms that didn't need opening.
Thank you for taking the time to explain things and for pointing out to me the folly of my rash post.
My sincerest and deepest apologies to all.

Its all cool. We'll get the matter fixed and game on.
Cheers.

I'm glad I read 30% of this thread. It made me "lawl". Isn't this game rated 13+? Damn parenting, no manners at all.

A polite e-mail to the DMs probably would have been a better course of action than posting a rant on the forums but some people never figure that one out.
