The Awesome of the DM Faction: A New / Old Player's Thoughts
-
@The:
Time and time again, people say that to be a member of a DM faction requires huge committment in terms of time and effort. This is not the case. The DMs understand that different people can commit different amounts of time to playing their characters.
The only commitment we expect is that, if you have an application character, DM Faction or Concept, we expect you to commit the majority of the time you have available to that character rather than playing lots of altyernate characters. This, and involving others when you do have time to play.
If you can play only once a week for only a couple of hours, this is no bar to a DM faction. Play what you can and involve others.
This is not always the case in my experience. Or perhaps my ideas did not appeal to the DM or faction at the time. "Involve others" seems to me to have been my biggest hangup. To me that means helping host or organize events. Just questing is not enough, and honestly it shouldn't be. I wished at the time I was given a little direction. I care less about pushing my own goals and more about the factions, and coming up with ideas on how to do that were extremely difficult. Player factions actually were alot easier to jump on board because your only immediate expectations tend to be questing. And if more is expected of you, the specifics tend to be laid out dirrectly. "Collect such and such from this person. Come with us on x and y expedition. Get on so-and-so's good side".
You honestly can't expect me to believe that CoA will favor those with less time as much as those with more time to spare. It simply does not.
Don't let my experience though make you think you can't do well in a DM faction. It seems to have worked for Wulf

i have been in a few factions over the years, mainly player ones (for those who remember, Bresk was a player house/faction not a dm one, though it came about because of the rpotw awards which were discontinued quite a few years ago)
and i was only in one dm one i was aware of, that one did not end well and left a sour taste in many of the principals mouths so to speak, but that was a very long time ago
i personally try to avoid situations where pvp may ensue, and dm factions are from my observation designed specifically for this in the long run
i am happy making my own fun and imaginary plots (the dryad one comes to mind now, having a ton of fun with it, though it is secondary), and i try to stick with the app character the most of the time, and much of my time now is searching for new players to the server and then guiding them ic and ooc to help make their playing experience more enjoyable (unfortunately my secondary character is better equipped to aid new character/players, but i have been adapting and trying to use Cilwa more in this capacity)
i have has a terrible time getting people to come when i make sendings and try to organize things, the helping individuals does make up for that though

Anyone thats ever wanted to join a dm faction but been daunted by the prospect should really just contact a dm (me for an example) and we will work with you to make that happen. So much potential awesome is wasted by players not reaching out and talking to dms. There really is no reason to be scared of any of us.

Ok, folks.
There will always be some examples where people did not enjoy being in a DM faction for one reason or another. I would, however, appreciate it if folks would focus on the good things of being in a DM faction rather that the individual experiences where it went wrong for someone.
On a side note: If something went wrong in the past, there is little we can do about it except look to the future. If you think the DMs need to address something, PM me or another DM with details. We can look at our policies that are in place now and see if they need adjusting for the future.

Being new to this realm (been playing for only a month and a half or so.) I have to say that getting involved with a DM faction has totally made me keep coming back to play this game. It has really given me the background of intrigue to go out and find the niche I felt would be best to play with my character. I do have a good amount of time to play at the moment, but that really has no bearing on my involvement with the faction. I play a lot more than the rest of my faction does, or so it would seem. So I do my little bit of fun with my faction, and when I'm done with that I switch to another character that is just my sort of "screw around" character and have some stupid fun. Really there is no right or wrong way, just a way to make it work for you.
I think the reason I've settled into it so easily is that I have had ZERO expectations of anything to begin with. I've just dived in and seen where it takes me.
