Need new laptop
-
I am a big fan of desktop computers, but I simply don't have room for a large screen, keyboard and all the usual stuff. So I need a laptop, that can run the newest games in low-mid settings, possibly higher.
I need a dedicated graphics card, Nvidia preferably. 4-6GB RAM should be fine, core i5 perhaps.
I don't really have a price range, but I'd like to keep it under £1000, if possible. Do you have any suggestions? Manufacuters I should avoid, or you recommend. Own experience or bunch of links I can check out.As for the screen, 15,9-17,3 with 1388x768 to HD.
Cheers

Look at lenovo think pads. The e520 might nkt be a bad bet, you can also customise them, and they can be fitted with matte acreens so you can actually see them.

Should go without saying; but some people do still sometimes go for them. Avoid Acer like the plague.
I had one myself, and I'll just say it felt like it was built to die. First the backlighting died. Then the battery shorted (I assume the panel they replaced was at the wrong voltage for the battery) then when it was finally stable turns out at somepoint they had reinstalled my OS, which meant the CD-Key and backup discs originally provided were no longer usable and infact it even caused a few "Not Genuine XP" issues.

My acer laptops screen fell off…...
Like, the entire top section. Hinges snapped and i had two large chunks of plastic

You could buy a bigger desk too.

I run a small computer business on the side, and I bought 4 Acer's recently and absolutely love every single one of them.

Good luck! The top one on that list, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834215163 , is my absolutely baby and favorite. NWN runs like a dream on it, so amazing to sit in my recliner while watching Tosh.0 and playing NWN. Heaven, IMO.

I have an Asus laptop with dedicated graphics that handles gaming well, it arrived with a dodgy hard drive and caused me headaches for a week but they had me send it in an fixed it. It seems like Asus price/performance is usually very good.
I have bought two Toshiba laptops that were bought to be portable but still useful. They aren't gaming machines and don't have a dedicated graphics card. However, they are built extremely well and run very nicely for the components they have in them. They also arrived with way less bloatware than most laptops I've encountered. I don't know if these experiences are shared among all Toshiba laptops, but my next gaming/more powerful laptop will be a Toshiba, so I guess that's a recommendation.

Emu brings up great points.
Toshiba is very kick ass from my experience, but they're very budget and hardly for gaming, even for NWN. At least, usually. You might find the rare gem out there from time to time. Again, I say newegg.com is your best pal.
Asus exudes quality in every way shape and form, but sometimes you pay for it. Their support is stellar, however, which helps.
Acer is the best blend IMO because they offer all the quality of a top of the line 1000+ laptop usually for around 500 or less, but your tech support is not good unless you're willing to stay on the phone and complain a lot. I fix them myself, so I love Acer.
Dell/Alienware are great if you're rich, but silly otherwise to save for them because it can be done the same for cheaper.
If you need help picking out a laptop, feel free to PM me and I'll take your budget and your taste and scour Newegg for you. Just let me know! :p

My view of Acer as someone who works in a repair shop is: They're fine while they work, if they break, Acer are absolutelty dire at support.
We stopped selling them as Acer's levels support reflected very badly on us.

I'm looking at one of these to replace my desktop. http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/category/notebook/
I've bought 2 desktops from them and they've both been great. The only issue I've had is when I left a parka on top of one machine blocking the fans and left it running for 6 days straight the video card turned black and smoke came out it. I blame shoddy workmanship.
I guess they're the poor man's Alienware. I think the FPS benchmarks are on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and you can see the difference between a $900 laptop and a $1200 is significant. $1500 and you can get something pretty sweet.

I find that a bit odd but as one of my customer's had an Acer crap out (was the processor), when I called Acer and sorted out the issue, they sent a replacement with a shipping box in 3 days.
I suppose it goes for anyone and any company, though. Sometimes they rock, and sometimes they're bastards.

Ermm… I hope that was just a joke!
I'm sorry, but WHAT?! "Oh, Hi, I really think that bullet proof glass is awesome but I threw a grenade at it and the glass shattered to pieces. What a piece of crap!"You could buy the best computer on EARTH that had its own AC unit built into it, or 5 AC units even. If you cover up an exhaust port, the hot air can do nothing but make things hotter. Seriously. That's crazy.

For the record, the laptop that fell apart did so after two years of being dragged all over the country to clubs pubs and festivals, as well a lot of other places.
It did its time, poor decapitated thing….

That's crazy.Which is why my computer has no exhaust port. Instead, it's missing the other side completely. Works wonders for cooling the system.

Sorry, not sure what you're talking about. Are you saying it has no intake and therefore no output? That doesn't really make sense, even for the newest computers. There has to be a way the hardware stays cool.. that's just how things work. The only possible way that would work is if every piece of hardware in your laptop was solid state and powered by gnomes.

I think he means he's running an open air system, as in an open case.

Thanks for all the advice. I live in the UK at the moment, how much would it be to order a laptop from newegg or from the site Nikko linked? The currency is $, so I assume they are USA based companies, do they ship abroad?

You're right, I misread his post. I was hoping for pictures of gnomes running a machine, too. Hey smirnoff I'll PM you a few links as I come across them.

Yup.
Just takes relatively lot of work to keep it clean, since dust likes to settle in there…Also, it's not by my choice. Since my last parts all exploded at the same and I swapped nearly everything that was inside, due to how my harddrives are arranged, the cables that go from the power supply to the HD come a an inch through the wall of the PC.
In other words, I just can't fit this stuff inside the case :P -
I checked a few links, read everything Doc Penguin sent me in PM, and I think I narrowed my search down to Asus.
MSI is great, but too expensive, Acer and Lenovo seem like a great deal, but I just couldn't find one in the UK with 15,6" display and decent video card.
Tell me what you think, especially about the N55SF-S2342V machine.http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=N55SF-S2342V
Decent graphics, core i7, 6GB RAM.http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=N53SV-SX858V-6GB
Weaker graphics, weaker CPU. Perhaps that extra 100 is a good deal for the other Asus? -
It doesn't worth to open a new thread, but I'd like to learn about general feelings about SAMSUNG machines.
