Posters and auctions are in character.

I see all these lovely and almost random posters go up on the auction, sale etc subforum and think to myself.
(Those of you who do post where you put your poster don't have to read past this.)
Where is this guy slapping on his poster selling bloodstones or the guy who wants people killed? I don't understand how people selling things with a poster can be responded to on their poster, and ipso-facto start a bidding war. On their imaginary poster that exists everywhere and nowhere.
I sort of get what the shopping lists of loot people post are about, though they have never really made sense to me especially when the title is ambiguous.
The best example I can get is this one, sorry poster in advance.
/forum/viewtopic.php?t=135525The subforum was made for the purpose of (TO MY KNOWLEDGE) decluttering the area it used to be in, Arabel Bulletin Board. I vaguely assume that the rule there applies here that one is to not reply to their post without the posters permission.
Where do I go in character to see your poster? Oh, its on the floor, fancy that let me scribble my offer on it, turn it into a paper airplane and send it on it's way magically back to the owner.
Mini-Rant over.

I thought the Auctions, Sales, whatever forum was pseudo-IC. i.e. IC where possible, but realism suspended to better facilitate sales. The idea being that sales and auctions involved lots of boring walls of text or aimless waiting for buyers and not much Adventure or Intrigue which is what the server wants. Thus, the faster sales can be completed, the sooner we can get back to being adventurers.
Sorry to disagree, but I think you're over-thinking it.

I find it quite annoying when ppl Post on the bottom of my adverts.
It removed the ability to edit/refresh the poster as you are no longer the last poster on the thread. -
i always assumed that the sales boards were placed in the market and guildhall - places where people would look to sell things to the adventuring community.
if it is other than that then it would make sense to say where they were placed, but the forum is fairly ooc anyway with the way things are written .
eg. spider legs flail for sale (+1 ab, +1 acid dam, saves …......)

I find it extremely good courtesy to include where you put up the notice, unless it's something completely harmless and generic that really could be encountered anywhere.

While I agree that it is a bit silly with the whole posting thing, there is also the practicality of things to consider.

People sending in PMs is well and good, but then other people wishing to bid at the same item are at the mercy of the OP and his ability to continously update the poster.
Say an item gets 8 bids at the starting price (ie. 500g). The seller has to put up the first bid as the standing one, and then recieve six more bids of 600g by PMs. After updating yet again he now recieves another five bids of 700g and one of 800g. He needs to go back, update yet again and recieve a new batch of bids. And so it goes on being a great headache for everyone. For items sold at a spescific price, this does not apply (but most items are auctioned away to max out profits). If people are able to post their bids below, then the auctioneer don't need to update the thing continously AND everyone have access to the latest and highest bid on said item at all times. For factions who like to reuse their posters, this will be a pain in the arse as keeping their threads clean is the most effective, so they might have to resort to fixed prices more often. Or list a suggested price, and offer the opportunity to negotiate IG. Haggle!
My four cents.

I have to disagree. We are here to play Coa, not to play merchant. That forum just makes things easier to sell and handle instead of wasting time wondering about those sort of things, which I for one don't want to waste time on. Im here for adventure and story, not to play merchant (Ironically, all three of my chars have been merchants though  )
I suppose you can include the things in posters about where that poster is located, but honestly not everyone remembers and theres better things to do and remember!
-
Normally I would say not to worry but now that I play a character that did not enter the guildhall unless she -had- to and is now part of the group banned from East, I would like to request that general locations be added to the posters as well.
If it is in East, she isn't going to see it.
-
For me, I assume that posters without any listed locations are generally available and I worry not where they might be posted, assuming only that I saw them somewhere in Arabel and surrounding villages. If they are labelled as being posted in a specific place, I consider whether my character might have been there and then respond.
As Jasede said, posters that offer unsavoury or illegal goods would be rather difficult to publish in the more up-market or regularly patrolled areas and as such might be better with a Location.
All in all, I tend to head down the Eliphas route of accepting that this forum is designed to get rid of the Marketing rubbish so that people can move quickly onto the RP.

Whicheveris the fastest way to get dat loot is the way to do it imo. I prefer OOC tells IG or in IRC PMs to get the real phat loot.
-
I doubt it matters for most people where the poster is unless its exclusively in an area that they are forbidden from entering and they are likely to talk to nobody that might have seen the poster. If they want the goods on sale they will make an offer even if the poster is under a rock in the sewers, that suits both the buyer and the seller and detracts nothing from the in game experience so I dont see the problem.

I have stopped including the locations of my bulletin posts, because if I post something, it is for everyone to see, especially if it is highly illegal and would otherwise draw animosity toward my characters. The only time I make bulletins where I specify a location is when they're meant to be discrete, and the PCs should only roleplay knowledge of the post if they're actually frequenters of said location, such as the Bloody Axe, or the World Serpent, for instance.
Posts without locations should be presumed to be found frequently enough in most areas that they're common knowledge.
I don't post locations because I don't want other players making my posts ugly with their responses. Bulletins don't invite responses, and that's all you'll see if you specify where they're made.

So, the general consensus is 'Roleplay doesn't matter as much as loot'
Gotcha.
It looks to me like the general consensus is Roleplay In Game > Roleplay on the Fourms.
I think what most of us are saying is we can overlook OOC or semi-OOC posts offloading the-latest-crap-that-you-don't-want-but-can't-get-rid-of-because-everyone-else-is-selling-it-too in order to have more time to spend In Game working towards Adventure and Intrigue.
Loot matters, it's a fact of DnD. But I personally don't want to have to find a half-baked semi-OOC reason to visit Thunderhome just so I can legitimately respond to some post made by a Dwarven character who specified that it was posted only in the Black Barrel.
I personally don't find it immersion breaking to overlook the fact that the effort behind putting up a poster everywhere an adventurer might see one would be vastly to onerous for most characters.
Although, it occurs to me LoC might just be trolling.
