Fire-Spinning/Dancing
-
So. Anyone else on here do it? If so, what are they toys/tools you use? I'm good with staff, and I'm starting to get a hang of rope dart and poi.
If you have no bloody idea what I'm talking about,
-
The women at 2:45 and 3:12 are amazing, I dare say that is sexy. 8)
-
Damn hippies.
-
Gahaha! My beard is aflame! This is not a fun hobby!
-
I considered adding fire breathing to my magic performance, but it's the most dangerous fire art available I've discovered.
-
If by "breathing fire", you mean spitting liquid parafine on a torch, then it's not really dangerous. When you have a lot of hair and you're spinning fire around yourself, I imagine it's easier to seriously burn yourself.

Oh yeah…. second one especially!

Forgot to mention fire-breathing myself, though I'm still learning. There are really only two potentially dangerous things about fire-breathing, in my experience. One, shaving off facial hair should be a no-brainer. Second…making sure to spray the paraffin in a fine mist as opposed to large droplets, because blowback is a pain and can potentially set your head and the inside of your mouth on fire. Almost happened to me once. x_x
-
One of my buddies does that. We all started off doing sock Poi but he went all the way to Fire Poi. Its fun to do with friends, at dances, at raves. I was thinking about moving up to fire but that is a bit away.

You just gotta press your lips together well.

I do lots of juggling, but I have not really tried fire stuff yet.
Maybe I should get started with 3 torches.
Diabolo and balls give a nicer effect with LEDs though.
-
I think the main risk was the wind shifting. Can't remember what famous fire breather it was, but she ended up gasping when it happened and it nearly killed her. Cooked her lungs.
I have massive respect for people who breath fire. The poi just looks cool as hell.
I contact juggle myself. I had shown some videos before, but they have since been removed from youtube, I think.

expert i'd say, else he wouldnt be working there.
-
I used to be adept in many of the Hippy arts, including poi, staff and juggling. Not so much these days. Have set myself on fire multiple times, too.
@Snowy - Torches are good, takes a little while to get used to the brightness of the flame going past your eyes, though. At night, you can't really see the handles because of it.

They're not "hippie" arts. They're varying traditions from multiple cultures (mainly Maori and Chinese) that have been modernized using Kevlar and basic machines. The fact that all these neo-hippies who sit around all day listening to Grateful Dead and Phish have picked this up and made it widespread is just an unfortunate circumstance, in my opinion.
-
You WOULD say that, hippy.

I'm kinda irritated about the hippie stereotype, mainly because it's not even prevalent anymore. Most street fair type performers are just passionate about showing people something amazing.
-
I can respect the art forms in their context, and I can even respect them pulled from their context by people who actually appreciate them for waht they are. That said, it's rather silly to claim that a certain subculture isn't all over it like stink on shit- and you have to recognize that they've stamped their cultural seal and identity on it. Maybe it shouldn't be that way, but it is. Most of the performers I've met are Asheville NC-style hippie wannabes. They perform at events with awesome names like CULTUREFEST and RALLY FOR TOLERANCE and GATHERING OF SPIRITS. And they never bathe. And they play their stupid drums laying on the street with no shirt on and asking for cigarettes while people have to step over them.
-
I haven't noticed that. Maybe that's due to where I am. You come to the folk life festivals and you will definitely see the hippies offering free hugs, but the performers tend to stand out as a bit more sophisticated to me.
Like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoKUPFvMQCI
The stinky hippies go to hemp fest, and unless you are Willie Nelson, chances are you aren't performing there.
-
We have these people infesting our mountains and they're the ones I automatically think of when I think of these performances.
