Disarm Feat
-
and I quote…
Specifics: The character can attempt to disarm an opponent in melee combat. Attempting a disarm applies a -6 penalty to the character's attack roll, and the combatant with the larger weapon gains a +4 bonus per size category of difference. A successful hit deals normal damage, and if the opponent fails a discipline check then the weapon flies from the opponent's hands.
and…
Whip - weapon properties weight (lb) 3
cost (gp) 1
damage 1d2
criticals x2
damage type slashing
size Small
proficiency exoticDoes this mean that whips are almost always going to received an additional -4 (OR POSSIBLY EVEN -8!) on the disarm check, unless fighting against combatants with daggers, kukris, etc.?
Seems… shitty
-
Daggers and Kukris are Tiny sized. Meaning you'd only get -2 AB against them in Disarm attempts, being that they're a size lower than whip's.
Now against a Large sized weapon like a Greatsword, you'd be trying to Disarm them at -14 AB and -10 AB against a Longsword.
This is all with a whip, of course. So yeah. Disarm feat on Whip is pretty much just for show.
They're still not too bad mechanically though, as there's half decent whips in the module.
-
Whip has the crappiest damage output in the game and is the worst disarming weapon there is. That said, it is also one of the coolest ones and with the most magical damage available (there are tons of +1d4 whips about).
Whip is more for style than usefulness. I've used it successfully, but you'll need some good damage bonuses if you're going to do anything useful. The most major incentive to use whip is the combat animation and the sound it makes. It is THAT sexy.
-
Agreed with Smurf. That sound is indeed, sexy. Little else is useful, though.
-
I tend to also happily make more powerful whips than other weapons on random quests. Since it is such a sucky weapon without such.

Narfel uses a whip and look at him!

@Swifty:
Narfel uses a whip and look at him!
As in, he tends to die alot if he is on the frontline for more than two seconds?

Well, he is a rogue. You shouldn't let rogues frontline.

However, a whip combined with weapon finesse and sneak attack…Is so sexy. If I could, I would have its babies. <3
-
Any weapon in the hands of a sufficiently powerful rogue is sexy.

However, a rapier combined with weapon finesse and sneak attack...Is so sexy. If I could, I would have its babies. <3Yes. Rogues are sluts.
-
Nah. Rapier is all about people with parry skill. Unfortunately, parry boosting gear doesn't stack in this server, so it's pretty pointless. The best you can hope to get is around 30 or so into parry, even with the +6 gear that I've seen. There's no flash or flare in that…
In another server I played in, I had a dual rapier wielder with a parry closer to 40. Now -that- was fun. 3 opponents at once and you finish without a scratch ^.^
Kukri is more about crits. With a proper build, your crit range can go all the way to 13-20. You don't need finesse to take advantage of that. But you do want magic damage dealing kukri's to take full advantage of the multiplier, since kukri's themselves are low damage weapons.

Considering how you can block a total of 3 attacks per round with full BAB, then no (I don't know if dual-wielding gives another block or not). Also, dual rapiers gives you a whooping -4/-4 to AB, so that would be an incredibly sucky build in any evironment.

Improve Disarm +Greatsword =Win
-
If you're going as far as getting improved disarm and exotic weapon focus. The scythe really starts becoming far more tempting than the whip.
-
I had GREAT fun with Haniko… what did she use a WHIP!. Even a frontliner with a whip as a 4fighter/4cleric...even got her to ninth before some jerk logged with all my gear.
I've done this topic before on the forum I believe but with a 4th level fighter and a 1d4 whip you can do some decent damage. By haniko's end she was doing with her spells up a minium of 15 points of damage.
while this is nothing compared to a greatsword it is still a viable weapon just ignore the disarm feat and enjoy flogging people!.
-
My old character used whips, and you know what? He was dangerous against anything living. Some of the whips you can find are incredible. You need a bit of luck, and of course they are best suited with classes that can add even more damage to it (rogues being one), but I can imagine that a character who would specialize in whips would soon discover that greatswords are over rated.
-
Greatswords are for cliche bums! Any man who knows his weapons uses axes! Whips are good for the maons.
-
I have always been partial to the old little girl big sword thing. Assides i don't think it is the most commonly seen weapon in the game either. Thinking elf girl with a great sword hehe. Then the server has more than enough Elves I think.
Personaly a little girl with a sythe seems almost as cool to me as well. Thinking of making a sythe fighter next time I want to mess around.
