Sharing Plot information to create adventure
-
Ok this started to bother me the reason this post, there are many faction both PC and DM and at any given point of time the faction or PC will definitely need other adventurers to come along with them (IC they risk their life, either to be in the good books of the faction or wants to help you out of personal ambition)
But keeping plot information to yourself will not help you. You can make hundred calls each day asking to explore a ruin, a character can come with you 5 or 6 times and eventually he will be bored searching the same place again and again with you cause you think the reason you are searching the reason should be kept within your faction and you basically treat players as meat shield or guard or you think DM will pay attention only if you take four or five people with you to the place you are going.
Why don’t you start sharing what you have learnt or the exact reason than just exploring, it creates personal interest for several chars to come with you and risk their life on the expedition.
Instead of making sending for “Going to explore ruinsâ€
-
i would suggest that making a sending "to explore ruins, information given upon assignment" makes most sense.
That way those that turn up gain the info and are thus deserving of it etc.
Also avoids the occurrence that any DM decides that the denizens of said ruins are now forewarned and have laid a load of traps etc in anticipation!
Not that this has happened to me before…

With all due respect to two certain unnamed faction groups, they need to do a better job of sharing. These two groups call for adventure, but seems only a select few really know why certain ruins or areas are being explored. So what if others know of the plot? I think its because certain factions want credit when the plot advances and don't want someone else to find "Item XXX" before they do…
One certain faction is really bad at this and it has frustrated me for months. Hence why I will someday join the faction because "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!"

I was just thinking pretty much the opposite, "wow, faction guys give up a lot of information these days on plots these days with little concern for 'losing' or letting too many people on it."
Maybe your character doesn't exude a lot of "I'm a good listener and hip to what you're working on" vibe. I think the stronger personalities with a set dogma or agenda may have a harder time getting hooks from opposing forces.
Sometimes you spend 5 trips to get just a little nugget you can use but it's a lot better than the days of everything being locked in faction chests and sent via PM with no in game meetings.
My level of involvement isn't as deep as deep as many of you, so you may be banging your head against a specific wall that isn't easy to crack. Check in with a DM, maybe there's another way around the problem?

I always make mechanically insensible characters, or characters with a very small niche that they excel at. Because of this I always need people for pushing any kinds of plots and try hard to involve anyone I can/my character doesn't hate/who are not trying to kill me.
I try to include in the sendings I make, or underway what it is we're looking for and why. Sometimes its blatant lies, other times its more than others would call "wise" to share (but they are the ones too worried about 'teh winz'). I value consistency and portraying characters emotions, also in the regard of plots, be it desperation or a slight of betrayal.
I think that as long as you portray a good reason for why you are looking for the things you are, be it true or relevant or not, its cool. I throw tons of false/made up/ridiculous plot hooks all the time. That is not to say I don't hand out real plot hooks too. I do that as well, but only to the people that come along for the right reasons.
What saddens me is when I get four-five tells after obvious excursion-sendings of the type "is it a scripted quest? if its not a quest, is it DM spiced?" Most often I say no, or that I don't know if a DM will chose to spice it (because I don't!), and most often this leads to a no-show. It seems many don't think you can push plots or look for x-item without a DM present. So I have trouble sharing plot hooks sometimes because people are more interested in quests because it pays. A bit off topic, sorry about that.
Edit: Also! People sending: "Going to to look for , meet ." bore me to no end and I will consider ditching them just for being so unimaginative. Spice things up! Even your sendings!

If you share information you don't win CoA.
Please remember this

What if I want to bring people into a trap? What plot information am I going to give them then?
-
FAKE plot info!
-
Have you never seen a Bond film?
When you have them in your trap you tell them EVERYTHING!
-
But telling team good, the plan of team evil usually leads to the death of team evil…

TEH FUN > TEH WIN

I've told everyone Naabilah's met, no matter what "team" (except the Rot) about her plot stuff. Very few have responded. So it's not always "not telling" that is the problem; "not responding" also is.

[sarcasm] its cuz she doesn't do sexy cyborz[/sarcasm]
its a shame people havn't reacted to her story, I found it interesting what little i could intereact with her.

Ah, background stories are a fun subject no one bothers with. I've had only one char ever even come close to digging up the core foundation of Hamson's personality and why he does what he does. I also attempt to dig into every character life story I can. . . but I haven't really noticed it being a big thing around to do. I have to basically throw it out in people's faces sometimes but still no bites.
P.S. Kudos for Darksecrets >.>

It's probably because her quest is very personal, and entirely directed to aiding the Bendine. Or so I think.
-
OP:- It does happen a bit. Playing a no-app, no faction char, I just noticed that.
A lot of "get stuff for me because I say so and I'll give you thanks and send you on your way" and less delegation of actual plot responsibilities. It's only natural to want to win, and I don't think it's ever completely going to go away.
Hell, maybe I did it too.
But, there's a lot of opportunity given by several faction players to get into plots. So it's not -as- bad as you say.

I am not asking to tell all your secrets to strangers. What I am asking is to have strong reasons (fake or truth). It really gets boring to just explore pointlessly to any damm place without a reason. A reason can immediately connect at personal level for a character who are not part of your guild.
"We have found tracks of Giants in the old ruins. We intend to search their lair"..and Gagnar comes running to aid you.
If you are going to fool people going into dangerous place, the PC will react once the truth is out and there is fun in that too.

Sometimes there is a balance between keeping a stories mysterious elements in play, and explaining every detail. Sometimes even when you tell people everything you know, it still seems like your holding something back. It's tough to balance it sometimes.

Best advice ever.

In the main regard of the post I find that the first few times I saw a sending for ruin hunting I thought well this will be pointless but went anyways. I got enchanted by the rp that occurs. Sometimes it's not so much why your going somewhere so much as what happens on the journey. To that effect build sendings that will bring adventure and a focal point for everyone to strive for.
On the side point of not sharing faction info. I find that it flies around if you are a unafiliated person imensely since people always want more help in their faction cause numbers increase the odds of suceeding. Matthew has been roped into more plots than I can count. Even if he can't be a part of most of the DM events (thus he is still alive =p) I enjoy immensely being a part of other characters journeys and feel I'm helping them advance the plot even without the shiny reward at the end or the credit for helping them live through it all.
