2010 Hak Debate

Attracting new players isn't so difficult. If everyone printed a flyer for your local game shop advertising the server that may be a way to attract new players. But I don't think we see too many new players anymore considering how old NWN1 is.

And what if the shop doesn't sell nwn anymore?
We should try to aim roleplaying communities instead. Too bad I don't know any. -
New Monsters.
More head model choices (please, please, please!).
New stories to be told.As long as it doesnt include anything silly (like jigglies!) then I think it's a fine idea.

Back on topic.
GOG or whatever they call it has just released NWN again. If you decide to include haks, you should wait a bit, so the flux of new players can settle down.
CoA was the second server I've logged in, and I logged in here because there was no hak.
If I remember correctly, there was an action server with two online servers. Three towns A and B if I'm correct. Again, if I understood things correctly, players could transport their chars between the two.
I wonder if it were possible to split CoA in such a way, and make only one of the two servers hak-packed, and the other one the default spawn point for new chars? (with the low level quests located on it)
It might also help the lag.. but I stop talking before someone accuses me of being selfish. :D -
When I was a new player, the way I'd select my server was seeing just how many players were in it. Weather it was open or password protected didn't stop me, because if I couldn't get in I'd look for a web page and figure out why. Most times a hak is needed.
Splitting up the servers is sonething that ALFA did, and it covered most of the major spots in the Realms. The issue of doing this is we will split player counts accross mutliple servers. Not to mention the cost of having more than one server.
And game shops don't need to sell NWN1 anymore. Lots of people can still find it in computer stores or can download it from the web for a small fee. Advertising in game shops where lots of roleplayers spend there time is a great resorce. So are roleplaying communities, but I as well don't know any.

We actually could split CoA into a hak and non-hak server and have few ideas on how to even make it feasible IC and fun for the setting, but–it doubles our hosting costs which are already 100$ a month.
-
I mean there is no interest for the shop's owner to put the poster out.
I don't know if the point about the player count is valid… Surely, we'd loose players lower then 70 IQ who can't add two numbers but...:p
-
Splitting the servers would be a bad idea in my opinion like I've seen some servers they have (Starting area) (Med level forest) (Underdark) That would divide up the player base to much

Most game shops have a cork board that DMs of PnP games will advertise. I've also seen advertisements for online games though something like OpenRPG. The shop owners have nothing to do with the advertisement.

Most? Well, things are different here.

Splitting the servers, especially if its done right (which our group of builders here would no doubt be capable of) would be a great idea. If you had the HAK-less server with the lower level quest areas, and the HAK'd server with the higher level areas, and portal transitions in game between the two, you would cut down on the lag that happens when we get crowded.
Though, the crowd lag usually happens when the server's full and everybody's in one area, doesn't it…. hermmm.

I've changed my mind. As long as it's one, easily downloadable file, I'm all for it. Also, we need details on this surgical procedure, for the computer nooblets… You know, not that I'm one of them or anything...
-
A HAK or multiple HAKs can be put together for easy install. I have seen some servers who created a self installer so that Nubs can manage it as well. Surely we have the skills in this community to make a HAK download/install simple enough for even GnomishInventor to cope with. I have found out that even Amber was able to download and install a HAK. If she can, anyone can!
In my view the HAK has a few key must have's for it to be worth integrating.
I'm sure we can achieve that in our community.
I am less happy with splitting the server. I think you will end up with a two tier environment. Lowe Levels will waltz about on the No HAK server where there are introductory quests and higher levels, long time players, will end up on the HAK server. The NOOBs will not meet the OldTimers as often in a Split environment and this, I think, is something we currently do quite well.

As long as the details of the server in gamespy show the name of the hak and its location and there is a shortcut on the website I doubt there would be much of a player loss from either players leaving or new players unable to access the game.
And as long as the hak doesnt contribute in any way to server lag id be happy with it.

I am personally somewhat against a hakpack, as we'd certainly loose a few players, BUT - right now, it's mostly a certain more or less constant group anyway.
I'd advise using CEP then, if any hakpack Yes, it's a big file - but it's one, and gives enormous amount of content. And most people who play NWN have it anyway.
-
yes most who play have the cep already
haks would give more spells classes feats heads clothes weapons forms etc
think of how many people we have lost in the past when we told them we dont support custom heads after they run about and we yell demon over the years
a hak would not reduce players, it would allow others who enjoy using haks to then come and play here without missing their favorite stuff
we can always get an influx of players by putting a notice in the vault where games are hosted when still over a million people log in each week to play one shot games, who may want to try a Persistant World now
lets not forget i know the anti hak issue was mainly because of dialup, it was beat to death that most people were on 56k
this isnt the case anymore, as most are on broadband or cable, and compression tools make haks take all of 1 minute to dl with auto extractorshaks ftw

Can we get a poll going? I don't mind starting one, but I'll let the original poster decide.
