PVP(?)

Hello. I know PvP is kind of a touchy subject on CoA, so I figure I would ask the playerbase/DM team.
If I'm about to PvP someone, would you rather I send you a PM? I don't personally think this is very helpful or fun, but I'm just asking. Role play while attacking you, which I try to do, but it gets hard. Role play after, making it fun(if you aren't too sore about "loosing"). Or what? I really don't want PvP be the reason to why I am not liked on CoA, because I think it is a great tool of conflict, plots, role play, and overall fun(if both sides are kind OOC).
Now, nothing specific happened, and I do not mean killing, just fighting. And maybe taking a few things.
Please, could you tell me how you feel PvP should be handled?

I was overseeing some PvP a few days ago that was absolutely wonderful to watch. Initially it started very OOC'ly because I was deeling with an ooc issue with one party when the second advanced unannounced. I asked the second party to back off while the OOC issue was resolved and then informed both parties that they were not allowed to prepare except to set each other as hostile. I then allowed the second party to advance.
I think that one thing really made a diffence in this situation. Time. Both parties had a moment to pause and think; this was the critial thing. I'm going to have to do well here IC and OOC to achieve something, and my character's life is at risk.
Now I do not think this should happen all the time at all. After all, it was disjointed. However, I do think many players react poorly to surprise when their character is at risk, just as many people react poorly to surprise in Real Life. As such, you might find the quiet TELL to the opposition enhances your PvP experience rather than detract from it. You can inform them of their intentions and request that they make no IC preparation, but that this is an OOC courtecy so that they can mentally prepare for conflict. You also might have the other player inform you that their intention was to log off for some RL event, or they're tired and off to bed shortly. They should request to reschedule the PvP if at all possible. At the end of the day, in PnP, events such as PvP are planned, there is no reason why courteous players cannot do so in NWN without metagaming things?
Listening to the four players after the event I spoke of, nothing was lost by the short pause and much was gained, imo. The thrill of PvP was there, theintensity as the battle balance swung one way, then another and back. The duration was extended and over all, a real thrilling event.

Always best to hit the DM channel and see if someone is about but if you're in an area without NPC's you do not need DM supervision. But as I said always best.
Role play while attacking you
Not neccersary or enforced.
Role play after, making it fun(if you aren't too sore about "loosing")
Definitely, never leave your opponent without the curtosy of giving them some value for thier beatdown. If you have to make a quick geta away though make sure you've provided decent RP in the build up to the PvP.

It is but the answer is not always a beatdown to push these things.

If possible get a DM, ensure OOC curtosy is of paramount importance, make sure you give value to the player if they're on the losing side. There are PvP guidlines on the forums that you can check out for a more in depth guideline.

As a player i would not want to get any message about it. If you manage to put your pride aside, it's refreshing to get your ass kicked once in a while! You may be talking about the incident where you beat the shit out of me last night, it was perfectly legit and ic and there are no complaints ;)

Getting killed happens to everyone. I've been killed in pvp even with no build up. Like when a certain someone had a stolen phoenix legion uniform and decided it would be fun to infiltrate the garrison in north arabel. . then got pwned by an old dude when the cover was blown >.>
Its all in good nature and to be honest pvp death keeps the server fresh with new concepts.

Without giving away any spoilers I just want to say that I've never seen you PvP the hell out of someone without warning. It was a surprise that you attacked but the RP, the locations, and the situation all screamed "I'm in a lot of danger right now" Even when you've done it to me before on past characters.
I would honestly say that having a character die without warning would tick me off but if I get beat-down for the sake of RP and GOOD RP not just someone wanting to play an IC jerk then yes, I don't want any warning. But I always like getting warnings via tells if I'm in danger of being FDed.
