Q/COA Compatable Overide
-
While this stuff does look quite the awesome , I am hesitant to download it after seeing the troubles with the .69 graphic additions and the lag they love to cause..
I mean even a new textured tree can freeze up on occasion I would hate to see what would happen if I had fancy textured orcs the next time a DM summons 20 of them in a pack.
But yeah that and the fact that I like to see on my screen what most others see on their thiers when it comes to NWN, I mean there I could be emoting or talking about something about a certain creature/item/rock… etc when people don't see the same thing 8)

You make a good point there. None of my ogres are blue anymore!
-
It would be just like a PnP game then, with everybody picturing a different scene from the DM's general description. Complete with hilarious mistakes coming from a distorted view. ("You fireball the orcs while flying, invisible, behind them in their tunnel??! I guess we didn't make clear how narrow the tunnels are, you'd flood most of the complex with flames" )

I'll address this concern.
It's not the texture that's the problem unless your running a machine that cant handle 64 meg graphics (and if you can then your computer must be as old as NWN it's self O.O)
It's the poly count of the placable trees that cause the trouble and the fact that in the toolset you cant set them to static which means they don't render until you get close to them and that's what causes the jitters.
Re-texturing a tileset will not cause trouble as it is all loaded and rendered as you enter the area. Basically while you see the load screen as you transition the server is sending your computer a list of tiles and what rotation they have and were they are placed on a grid. Once it is loaded that's it. It does not have to do much more with the tiles themselves.
Now, creatures can and will cause stutters as the render. Basic NWN creatures do this. Basic NWN placables. The only way to combat this is with a high end machine with a fast vid card.
So far, with the machines I'm testing on (a low end machine, 2 mid end machines and a higher end machine) there has been no performance issues with loading the redux creatures. I have personalty see large spawns of goblins, orcs, lizard men and trolls with out any more trouble then I normally have on my personal machine (mid end) and I have faced some medium sized spawns with the worgs and dire wolfs with out any concerns either.
That's not to say I wont find some, or that a low end machine is going to run fine. That's why I'm testing it first I'm waiting for feed back from the low end machine user to see how it goes. This machine experiences a lot of jitters with out the over ride, I want to see if this makes it any worse.
As for seeing things differently from others.. yes, you will I suppose. But you will still see an orc and you will still see a troll and so on. It might not be the same as the the other people see.. but for all you know they are already using an over ride you don't have, or they have their graphics set differently to you. What you see is often completely different to what others see any way. Any way, if you don't want to use it that's cool, you don't have to. I'm doing this to add a little ore depth to a very old game.. give it a little spark and I'm letting others who what to have that to have it . And if, for some reason, it drops performance.. getting back to the way it was before is as simple as hitting the delete key :D

Added in the new ogres and they work nicely from what I have seen. Meet a big band of Ogres and Berserkers.. but none of the ogre mage's yet :( Only draw back is old Gromfy does not look so cute any more. :D

Still working on the winter tiles. The roads too a while as I had to create the Alpha channel (the think tat makes textures transparent or shiny) from scratch. Most of the other textures can either stay or just need a little snow added to them.
-
Working on the city tiles at the moment but will not get much done over the next 3 weeks as I'll be taking a holiday Yay
-
awesome work man cant wait to download it all.
quick question though is it going to be possible to exclude some overrides..
I like the undead ones i have now.. and am undecided if I want to change them
-
Yes, that is as simple as knowing which .mdl files to exclude :) I'll help out there
-
Starting work on this again now I am finished goofing off and fishing. Got about half the city tiles to redo and have finished touching up the winter tiles.
-
Do you need help?
-
I'm just finishing off the city redo.. though I did find one bug I had to fix to. Apart from that it is it ready to go. A few more days I think and it will be ready for others to try. :) Thanks for the offer
-
Has anyone tried these out, I'd like to know how they affect performance. The game freezes with too many monsters on screen, anyone else have similar problems?
-
no one can tries these as I never released it. But i never found any performance problems when testing and neither did those I asked to test for me. The reskins should have no impact on gpus
-
The game freezes for me already, without any graphical overrides. I'm not sure whether it was because of graphical problems, or what.
Guess I'll have to try it out and see the hard way, when you release it!
-
What sort of computer? I tested this on a 5 year old machine and it had no effect.
It really sounds like some other problem like the game needs to be reinstalled or you have a hardware problem.
-
It's a quad core, 2GB RAM, 1GB nvidia GeForce 9500.
It's probably a driver/windows thing, as you say. I'll try some re-installs.
-
I want to use this.. It looks so pretty.

freakin takes so long…
