It is necessary to own a joystick to play this or do I just suck horrendously?

I think the latter is true either way :)
-
You can play with anything. It does take a bit of practice, it's not as "pick up and play" as a lot of games. The flight model and combat is great though once you figure it out.
What's up specifically? Having trouble turning fast enough? Try to keep your speed within the blue zone on your speed meter for the fastest turning speed. Use pitch, not yaw to turn, so roll, then pull up.
-
or do both at the same time! dogfighting is where it is at, as was the case with the original game.
-
Well, I can turn and all that fine, but I go SO fast that it's impossible to shoot those toxic canisters in the training.
-
Problem is training throws you in the deep with fixed weapons.. Worry not and get in game after learning travelling around. You can start with gimballed weapons that do some autotargeting for a tad less damage.
-
tbh so much easier with a joystick i find. though calibration on mine is off so i rotated anticlockwise unless i control it
-
I took advantage of the autumn sale and bought it, but I'm not sure when I'll start playing.
I'll pester some of you to babysit me for a while when I do! -
Names, we need moar CMDR names!!

2.0 Horizons beta is out.
Except I can't download it because of reasons….
Guess they will fixit tomorrow.
:(
-
Just a heads up.
Horizons is released on 15 Dec… so this Tuesday.
-
Waaaaaaay earlier than I thought. But that's awesome. I can shoot hellz and magpie in a land vehicle sooner than I thought. Been testing the beta and it's pretty cool.
Missions being gained by finding crashed ships and such is pretty fun, sounds like they are developing that further too.
-
still playing the basic game, dont know if i will end up going for horizons yet.
still in a viper, but 2/3 the way to a vulture (the 4mil one?)
-
Yeah, no need ot hurry for horizons if you just bought the main game. Keep in mind while a better space ship is what makes you feel you progress, its not a progress driven game. You can do the same things throughout the game with any ship. Even a wing of 4 vipers (relatively cheap fighter) can cause trouble to a much larger vessel. Its not the regular MMO where PCs of far and away levels make the one at level 50 invincible to the level30 one. Underestimate a small wing of cheap ships and you 're in trouble.
In fact I prefer the small cheap and fun ships most of the time. Gameplay feels more "free", and piloting more action packed.
-
Is this game subscription based? I thought about picking it up myself.
-
Buy and play. Its planned for an expansion per year. Horizons is season 2 expansion basically and it contains the main game too.
Additional content will keep coming for the Main game only owners (new ships etc.) but they won't be able to land on planets and other stuff. Also multi crew handling of large ships is supposedly coming during season 2. (Zool I need you at the turrets when I get a Federal Corvette, till then I ll settle for the anaconda)Other than that no subscription, buy once, play forever.
-
I will man your turrets and pilot your fighters man. Shame it doesn't look like I'll be able to park my cobra on your Federal covette though. At least… not for some time.

so i am stranded and out of fuel in a system without a star base. What do i do now?
is there any way to get more fuel, or do i have to get myself killed to respawn and lose all the bounties i have to claim?
