Supporting Arabel, Long Term
-
It costs about 99 USD / month to run the server.
In the past we've always just done donation drives, but finances are easier to manage when they're reliable, I find.
So if there is anyone in the community who is able and willing to pay monthly as part of a group to keep the server running, please get in touch. Payments would be made around the end of each month, starting from November (which we're currently able to run through).
If you are struggling or otherwise unstable financially, please don't feel pressured to sign up, just trying to get a feel for how possible this might be.
-
A few people have come forwards but I'm not sure why it's only in PMs! It makes it much more difficult to organize this.
If people really want to remain anonymous for some reason I can set up a forum for this.
-
I'm so down for this. Will it be an automated transaction?
-
From the sounds of it CoA needs a premium account of some sort to set up monthly payments, so it'll just have to be done manually.
-
If you do a regular payment or not, I will gladly give you art for the wonderful donation :) Remember that whenever you donate!
-
I'll just set a monthly alarm or something. My short attention span demands it.
-
I can set up my bank account to make regular automatic payments. For some reason, this is just now dawning on me.
-
The problem is with Paypal's regular payments. There may be a way, we're looking into it.
People paying will still either need to have their Paypal accounts set up with Direct Debit or have a standing order set up from their bank accounts to make sure there's enough cash to allow the payment to go forward.
As not everyone who got in contact has posted in this topic, I'll be making a separate forum for those interested and able to help here, to help keep track of CoA's finances.
-
Ill help out. It isnt much, but maybe it is enough.
-
will help out too if i can setup some automated payment. otherwise I -will- forget …

Out of curiosity, how well does our current server perform?
More people might be willing to contribute to a monthly donation if we knew we could afford a server that provided little to no lag.
Is such a thing feasible, or are we limited by the engine in terms of performance?
-
I have honestly been hesitant to contribute cash, due to dying to lag a
fewsomemany times. I understand that keeping a server affordable is necessary, but I can't help but wonder if there is a better host out there. -
Strawman or Mithrander are probably the guys to talk to about that. I'm no server geek.
We're still looking into some means of automation of payments as well.
-
Count me in for 10 bucks. Just need to know how the hell I get it from my lovely bank account in Denmark, to you.
-
You'll need a Paypal account, and at the end of every month you'll have to transfer $x worth of currency into your Paypal account and then from there to the CoA account.
The bank transfer can be automated as a standing order, or if your Paypal is set up as Direct Debit can be ignored entirely.
The Paypal transfer could do with some automation but we'll see if it's possible. If not, this much will have to be done manually each month. -
Can someone link the hosting plan?

Removed posts discussing specific donation amounts. Please PM them to me if you're interested in helping rather than posting directly onto here (not the guys who've already posted – I've made a note)

Server's been really unstable lately, and I think this thread is a good thread to bring this up.
I'm quite positive that with a bit of research and looking into it, COA could find a better, more stable host that actually costs less than what COA currently pays for. This is something that maybe the DM's might want to investigate doing (and I do understand you guys likely have before and there's alot that goes into such a decision).

The current team (most of them) have had little to do with the set up of the server, looking into this takes a decent amount of time because of lots of issues we have to go through, one of which is contacting relevant people who we only really see when there is a real server issue, another is discussing stability and maintenence, Mithrandir has always kept the server up and running pretty much flawlessly, and I know I for one wouldn't be interested in him not being heavily involved in any new server that got set up. Because, Mith rules.
