Wasted autofeat
-
ok so ive got my first pure ranger to lvl 6 and find, with the custom companions, a feat gets wasted that could be very nice to use. had this ever come up before or is it a just have to live with it thing?
-
When I figured out what was meant, I wondered the same thing.
-
Wasted? You get its effects 3 levels earlier and a hundred times more powerful.
-
Ah. Well, that stops my wondering. Thank you.
-
the companion is not feat oriented anymore, so that feat at lvl 6 would make up for the what a normal fighter gets two levels earlier
-
…what?
-
You've not lost anything. You have a superior companion, earlier then you did before. One that does not cost you XP if it dies.
-
ah ok that makes more sense then
-
Still makes zero sense to me too.
-
The default ranger level 6 animal companion feat is not used on CoA. So just ignore that default feat.
-
it is kind of used. By the scripts. To tell it you have it, so can summon companions (well, kind of, in a roundabout way)
I -could- script it to be removed from the character sheet, but…. I don't see the point. When you summon your companion, your using that 'feat' which is a default feat built into NWN.
-
I can still summon my companion before I have it. Weird.
-
the whole reason I mentioned it has nothing to do with the companion itself.
rangers have favored feats at 1 and 5 and would be a bonus feat at 2 and two at 6 like a fighter yet one is auto companion, which we don't use yet the feat is still coded as one of the two feats gained at lvl6
since we get our companions sooner as a class feature what I was saying is that auto taken companion feat takes away the level 6 second feat bonus so ranger gets one feat at 6 instead of 2.
-
I could make you only able to summon at level 6….
The feat is just left over from default NWN, we made it so you can tame animal companions and stuff, insted of just use the old normal ones. Ignore the feat?
-
I'm… Not sure what the problem is. Are you complaining that, instead of getting animal companion at lvl 6, you get it already at lvl 3, that is 3 levels earlier than normal, and that because you get the feat 3 levels earlier, there should be something else at lvl 6?
Rangers don't get bonus feats. They get a class ability called Animal Companion at lvl 6. In Arabel, they get it 3 levels earlier. The other "bonus feats" are actually just class abilities: Dual wield, trackless step, favored enemy, and so on.
OR: What do you mean by this:
would be a bonus feat at 2 and two at 6 like a fighter
Because rangers don't get bonus feat. They get a companion. In Arabel, they just get it earlier.

You have no idea how the mechanics work.
All classes gain one feat every three levels, including level 1.
So One, Three, Six, Nine, Twelve, Fifteen and Eighteen.
All classes then have class features (which are abilities, not feats).
Unique among those classes are Wizards and Fighters, who get to choose their class abilities at specific levels.
Five, Ten, Fifteen, Twenty for wizards & ever even level for fighters, including One
Keep in mind that these are not general feats, that these two classes choose, but thematic.
Wizards only have access to spellcasting and crafting feats for their class abilities, and fighters only to combat feats.
Rangers do not get this, nor do monks or any other class.
They are not replacing a "feat" they would otherwise get in exchange for a special ability like summoned animal.
All classes get class abilities, fighters and wizards just get to choose theirs. -
Since you wanted it to reflect the average player, I fixed it. :)

-
Nine is probably too easy. CoA's "soft cap" was raised from 4.0. (Although frequently, equipped enough gets you to 10.) Ten is more of the soft cap, casters as an exception.

Companion feat seems perfect right now, as waiting for 6th level to get your companion was… meh. If any feat is kinda wasted is dual weilding for pure rangers. Damage gain is minor, attacking with a 1d6 weapon for -2 ab, considering you need a dex based (less str) character to effectively wear light armor without major ac loss. No ranger uses that, everyone goes ranged, or shield-weapon, or two hander and str based with medium armor. It 'd be much better if instead of dual weild which equals to two feats (ambidexterity and TWF without any dex requirement admitedly) rangers would be able to pick any other two fighter feats to compliment range, or any other fighting style, maybe as part of a kit instead of directly picking bonus feats.

Team is discussing ranger kits.
