The talk on mechanical power and other things related.

CB rocks
oh..and occasionally one can talk their way out of a sticky situation, but mostly with other PC's
and in scripted quests..RP? only in areas where there is a lull or no danger present, or potential of danger, only the BEST players can pull this off (i have actually seen it and am always amazed and impressed, i am not one of those players)

As long as the playerbase sticks to the mentality that they need a bigger gun to make the events easy, the enemies guns will get bigger to keep it interesting.
This is also true.
Really, what it boils down to is that we try and have the server suit your playstyle. If we know you're a PC/group that lacks raw power and tries to talk their way through things, then if we make an event involving you it may have more possibilities to do such in them. If you do have raw power and tend to flaunt it openly, you're more likely to find that events you're in become markedly more dangerous to challenge you in that regard.
If you play someone who goes against the law and PCs become a cakewalk for you to take out, that's not where the setting ends. A bigger, meaner fish will turn up and it may not be a PC or even act through a PC. If you likewise trump the server as a lawman you may find a big bad kingpin moving into the scene and giving you more of a challenge.
As for open server events, they do tend to be kept simple and balanced solely around levels of those involved. Short of gimping powerful characters who want to join in ourselves, there's not much to do. I've had events where people who are tough nuts compared to others remark openly about what a cakewalk an event is - and on the other hand where it's made to give the tougher guys more of a challenge it readily results in some collateral damage to lowbies.
Frankly it's only when people start going level 9+ being known for little but an ability to do quests well and win PvPs that I begin to lose interest. It's as simple as that: be known for something other than levels and loot and you're on the right track. You can have them, but if they're all you have then it leaves the character looking a bit flat from a distance.

It's a two part game. Part one of the game is numbers and odds. Part two of the game is making believe and telling a story. Don't be pissed off at people who like both parts of the game.

Being able to figure out mechanics well is a great ability, but there are lots of ways to use it and sometimes the option to go strongest win over other parts. But, it is just a part of the game and I admire those who can make sense of the mechanics, cause I for certain cannot. However, I do often think it is a shame that people at times, not always, use their talents just to find loopholes in the system and become untouchable unless you match to that which makes it difficult to make something FUN for everyone. I never really bother looking at the levels of characters etc myself, cause it is not really easy to know what is balanced and what is not. The CR system is just a big lie, cause I have seen CR1 take down a party while CR10 is a leaf in a storm!
I see it a bit like, roleplay is great but we rather avoid CoA Sim, just like mechanics are good but we don't want players just to powerlevel. Mix both and you good :)

Lets not fool ourselves, full time RPers are a minority in the game (ironically..some of the most talented mechanical players are the BEST RPers..I have to be careful i do not paint everyone with the not a RPer brush, that is unfair on my part), I do not know how many people I have tried to talk to in the game only to have them either ignore me or excuse themselves so they can get right to "it"
I try to talk to everyone, but sometimes time will not allow it, and occasionally I do get caught in RP with the players who prefer and do it a lot, they are the ones I try to seek out and it did not take me long to figure out who is who.
the loss for some is that I use the RP as a prelude to getting to know them, I and my character prefer to quest with characters i know, also getting to know them is a prelude to drawing them, so if you see me wanting to talk to your character..it means i want something
that something? to know them..are they worth adventuring with, will they remove the helmet and let me see their face so i can jump to stage two in my RP, which sadly involves some OOC tells (it is important now that I know what the players want their characters to look like, i do not like redoing drawings). All this information is gained in the "interview".
Are they friendly with me? (you do not have to be friendly to have me draw them, i just need to see their face)
if Yes, I get to know them, after which I may quest with them, or aid them in some way in their quests. be that in advice or some limited duration enchantments, that is how I make friends
Mechanical power? i had been veering off the path in my earlier comments, but the mechanical power is the primary thing in the game right now as far as surviving encounters geared for more talented players. How is it fixed? for me as a weaker player I try to make sure I have friends who number in the mechanically strong, it can reap survival benefits in some of these events.
What do the DMs look at when they are in? i can only speculate, but i am pretty sure some people in the spire Rping what outfit to wear is not going to gain much attention(rightfully so..and even if the RP leads to something the DMs should or could listent to, they are likelt bored and long gone when that point is reached), the ones adventuring and wading through stuff will always gain attention
the best and most frequent rewards will always come from adventurers facing overwhelming odds in combat, RP will not garner the same, it is the nature of the game. I do not mind and I have adjusted my expectations.

Personally I love taking some concept that sounds mechanically terribly and figuring out to make it mechanically viable. A good fun concept matters far more than + 1 ab or ac in the long term. Because it fun that keep you logging in. You also be surprised how lethal some 'joke' characters can be, if you figure out how to roll with there weird quirks, rather than just go for the standard 'best' build based on class/race combo.
If anyone need help making some cool concept that seems mechanically awfu,l work reasonably well, drop by on ICR sometime.
