Nwn freezing
-
Had this problem for some time now.
Nwn locks up, freezes, and I have to kill the process and restart it. Happens often.
Quad Core CPU
nVidia Geforce GT 9500 1GB VRAM
2 GB RAMI've tried:-
Windowed mode
updated drivers
CPU affinity setting
CPU speed settingAny help for it?

Isnt there an override somewhere for NWN graphics on a 64bit OS? If I remember correctly it was suppose to help with freezing. Beyond that, have you thought about adding a bit more RAM (if possible). Modern operating systems tend to be RAM greedy. Do you have anything else running in the background? 2 GB of RAM is not really a lot for a modern OS with multiple programs running.

That is the link to the texture override I was talking about.

32 bit OS, Windows 7.
I don't know about RAM. I can run modern games with no stutter, why would a 12 year old game built for a Pentium III with 128 MB RAM in mind give pause?
-
I don't know how it works and what it is optimized for, but my laptop is hotter while running NWN then it should, sometimes it even shuts down because of this.
It shouldn't. -
I have problems with frequent crashes. I got it to not crash that often by updating graphics drivers, but now the entire game flickers frequently (I see my desktop image through the game window) instead =/
-
similarly i get freezes and have to resart NWN as it is unresponsive. no idea why but is fairly recent (months not years!)
-
Only happened after windows 7. XP never gave the issue.
Tried compatibility mode.

I have the same problem on my laptop with 64-bit W7 and integrated gfx. It happens mostly when I switch between windows (alt-tab) and return to NWN - then it freezes. But for example also when I suddenly enter a new area with lots of people and NPCs in.
Does not happen often enough to cause me try find a solution, though. Perhaps once per hour or so, on average.

Run it in a virtual windows system. Win 98, or XP, inside a window. Hopefully the graphics card it emulates will be much more compatible with NWN and all your problems will be solved.
-
My PC does have an integrated intel chipset gfx too.
I'll try disabling the nVidia and using that.
-
You will probably end up with strangeness in the GUI if you use that card. Worth a shot though.
-
NWN has random crashes on my Win 7 laptop.
Win XP tower plays fine, however, I have had to downgrade my ATI drivers or else NWN error crashes before the intro movie.
NWN may be an older game, but that doesn't mean it's optimized to run on new systems. Graphics engines are not all the same. Older games tend to need tweaked alot more to run properly.
-
Are you loading from the launcher?
When I loaded from the launcher in Windows 7 I had the same issue.
Now that i load directly from Nwn.exe I do not.
-
Tried the override anyway Axiom, didn't work.
Changing the gfx to intel chipset didn't either.

I had a s similar problem, every 20-30 minutes IG I'd lock up and still have sound but 0 response from the game. I eventually uninstalled NWN cos it was that frustrating but ever since I reinstalled it, it hasn't had a problem. May not help much but have you tried a reinstall? Or perhaps try running NWN off a USB stick, you never know…

Same problem I had. No idea what I did to fix it.

the idea about a virtual machine was actually quite good.
-
I remember trying the virtual machine thing but my area loading times where somewhat unbareable

I had the same problem about two years ago, and I managed to fix it! Don't ask me how though, I cannot remember all the details. The problem was memory overflow, crash/freeze happened randomly between 1 and 30 mins of gameplay. It seemed to me that nwn cannot deal with large amounts of physical memory, just keeps dumping useless bits after bits into the bottomless pit of 6GB, but eventually it will freeze/crash (or the game became unbearably slow). Try to limit the memory allowance of the game somehow, I think that was my solution.
Here is my nwnconfig.ini. I do not run nwn in compatibility mode, I have 64bit Win7, 6GB RAM, corei7, and 2GB Video Ram in my laptop, and it runs smoothly with these settings
