A suggestion
-
I've been seeing a lot of group concept posts in the forums lately. This is great, and we love to see new and fresh characters and ideas coming up.
However, I'm going to make a suggestion. This is not a mandate, it's my personal opinion.
Before you try to make a new faction, try to see if your concept fits in an existing player faction. Some really good faction ideas I've seen just died out because there just weren't enough players to go around. Focus is always good, and when you have a lot of team mates, you'll find getting your goals accomplished is suddenly much easier than you thought it would be.
Three factions with 10 players will generate much more excitement than 10 factions with 3 players each. If you have a different take on an idea, see if you can perhaps try to influence an existing faction's ethos with your own ideas if the two faction ideas are built along common lines, or perhaps even combine them to come up with an approach you never considered.
I'm not trying to stifle your creativity, but see if you can channel your concept into existing factions. If you feel your idea really cannot fit into any existing one, feel free to to make a new one!

I've seen a lot of people just springing up a faction/group for the sake of it because they are rolling a new character or something. There's groups out there that can fit the character concept and involve them in ways that might be identical to being in the proposed faction. Why ask someone to roll an entirely new character toward it when you could just join their faction that already has something going on and do your own thing with them?
-
On that note if anyone doing anything interesting with elf's, do approach me in game. My general understanding the currently elven faction is basically dead and I'm planning something quiet different in approach that I don't want to talk of in general discussion, but any serous elven pc would have a easy taking part in.

This is a great suggestion and I also encourage it. That's not to say you have to follow it; if you have a great independent idea and it doesn't fit into an existing faction of course pursue your own – but a lot of player factions are generating great rank and file systems of their own; are creating their own goals and are actually fleshed out a good bit more than our current DM factions -- they are definitely worth your attention.
Even if your agenda differs slightly, it can create a great internal dynamic -- and it's not as if you can't establish your own faction at a later date!

I agree thoroughly with the original post. Existing factions need players desperately. The Red Hart and the City Watch essentially has one player each, yet there is a great fight going on between them
-
I thought about making a Red Hart but it's not really viable…You'd be starting at level 1 and essentially unable to complete 90% of the lowbie quests.
Feel free to prove me wrong though!!!
-
Only because of the siege right now. There is nothing stopping you from doing the lowbie quests, it just looks weird for an Errant to chase chickens. You could also make a non-app character and join as a squire.
-
Oh, I was talking about now. As in, make a Red Hart to take part in the epic war plot.

I'd imagine that any errant seen in Eastern district would be killed on sight.
-
Only a erring errant would err and enter east early earning an earful
-
You can always join the Red Hart after you got out of training wheels levels. Also since the Red Hart control outside the city, there is a fair few quests you can do if low level. (Damp cave is a 1-4 for example). The dms seemed to have ensured Eveningstar has something for every level range last time I was there too.

If your drawback to rolling up a new character is leveling, I wouldn't be so worried; Since the siege has began, I've been getting DM XP like crazy for all of the shenanigans I find myself getting into.
Back on topic however, I completely agree with the OP and specifically Jadeth; I must also stress joining The Watch. While there is only one Red Hart at the moment, we have a couple St. Alubriens (who have a knack for fire), who have been very active as well. There is too much going on for both sides to pass up…
-
You mean one Alubrien with a knack for fire.
But more Hart and Watchmen would be good
-
My char might even consider to join the Harts… or to step up against them. It's just he has hard time finding people who'd like to get out a besieged city. Despite he claims to know a possible way out.
but we're getting off topic
-
Well, don't deter too much from the original suggestion – we, of course, love seeing DM faction apps, but we more meant see if your concept fits into one of the many player factions currently available, such as the GWC or Elven Gathering!

This is what I did with Goodman. Never in a lifetime would I have thought a Necromancer would fit in the Mages Guild. I decided to give it a shot and things have turned out great so far, it even generated interest from others to join as necromancers. What I learned from that is this: "Don't ever throw away a chance to do something different, on the assumption of failure" -Quote from KDR
