Do elves have clans? I thought clans were more of a dwarves and gnomes thing - maybe Tethyrians too. As far as elf surnames go, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (FRCS) has examples of names that are made of elf-sounding syllables, as well as surnames that are two-word combinations of human words. I feel like either would be appropriate.
Examples in the FRCS include names like Amalith, Braegen, and Calaudra, as well as names like Eveningfall and Moondown.
As for the original question, I have never heard of any other player using Treedweller as a surname.

And look for english to elven translators online, they really help get a elven feel to things more. For example I once I had a half elf bard/cleric of Torm called Teu'kerym (or something like that). Her name was basicly elven for "true sword" that nicely linked her Tormite and elven aspects together and sounded rather nice too. :D

Also, here is a very good post which should help you have an idea on how to make an elven concept. Just click on the according elf subrace, default for NWN is moon elf unless you select another by writing the appropriate race in the subrace field when creating a character. There is lots of useful info on many other races too.
As for names, I sometimes use the following tables which translates name meanings to elven.

Hope it all helps.

The elves have houses normally. They serve a chaotic Monarch, but not everyone recognizes the "authority".
Here's a "How To" guide for elves. This is just a set of guidelines I've taken from various FR and D&D sources.

Clans or tribes would be more fitting for Wild Elves or Wood Elves I believe.
