PC Help

Well, its come down to this and I have nowhere else to turn…
My PC is dying, I think. I have received the following message upon boot up: "lsass.exe - Application Error the application failed to initialize properly" click to terminate.
Once clicked upon, the PC goes into a solid freeze on a blank screen. Re-starting the machine in order to attempt to work through safe mode does the exact same thing. Because of this I am unable to perform a system recovery or windows repair.
I have been online and followed a guide to execute a repair by use of the manufacturers installation disk - this has not worked either and am now to the point where it will boot to a command prompt. I could do a complete wipe and re-load but have much data loaded on here of extreme value - pictures of my time in the military, stuff that is irreplaceble. Any help is genuinely welcome folks...
Thank you ahead of time!

Hard-drive may have bad sectors do not run windows recovery
Take the hardrive out of the machine, put it into an external hard drive case, or directly into another machine, get all the data onto a totally separate hard drive. Back that up to another totally separate hard drive. Reformat you original drive, fresh install, copy files from backup drive to original drive.
Or fix the lsass.exe error. Some googling might get you somewhere, I'd back everything up first though, just in case

If you do lose data

If you have bad sectors, then I'd be looking at a replacement drive. They're not that expensive and much more fun than loosing all your data. Yes, bad sectors can be repaired/exclided, but if you now have them, it may be a sign that the disk is degenerating.
Build a fresh installation on the new drive, slot your old drive in after and copy all your pix/docs/music etc over onto the new drive after. You can also copy the whole NWN folder across and save the time taken to reinstall NWN
All is then safe and sound.
Other options: run chkdsk c: /f /x /b Some of those flags are redundant! This will clean up the bad sectors but will not repair the faulty lass file. After this, do a windows repair from your original windows CD. This will fix the Lhal error and also fix any other missing windows files.

I've had the same problem myself re a corrupt drive with my personal stuff but with help it was all recovered professionally.
I don't know if you can try this but it may work providing you can get to the start menu.
You should have a "system restore" option somewhere on your PC. This will restore the state of your PC to an earlier point in time. It worked for me when I had a bug or virus blacking out my PC.
I'm not very PC savvy and can't tell you if this will fix your problem but it can't make it worse.
START - CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM AND MAINTENANCE - BACKUP & RESTORE.
I hope you can get things sorted.

Folks,
Thank you much! This has been a rather worrisome ordeal since I am thoroughly attached the the memorabilia pictures contained within - if I lost them I think it very unlikely to ever get them back.
I am off to getting me another Hard drive and trying this out
Again, thank you all!

Oh, and this is a perfect time to point out how important backups are to be put on something other than the same hard drive you are copying it from. It will prevent you from losing data and information that is important to you when you hard drive crashes.

DO NOT restore your system to a later point as suggested. It can very likely WORSEN your hard drive errors.
Another option is to download Ubuntu and put it in a pendrive and then start up your machine with it in the drive. Some options will come up, Startup Repair being one of them.
And yes, if you have the money it's best to buy a brand new hard-drive. But if that's not the case, you can always create a back-up of your files and then do a clean install on your operating system before downloading your archives.

Oh, why would system restore likely worsen things ooi?
Sounds like it's an awful thing to have your system backed up. I wonder why the OS ever had that option in the first place if it's such a shot in the dark. Not saying you're wrong btw, just interested to know how it can cause further damage.

I don't know why this is but I've seen it in more than one guide on the internet that helped fix my hard-drive errors.

Got me a Removable Drive… Gonna try and transfer the data, will let you all know how it turns out!
On a side note, I did try the restore before reading some of the responses posted here and maybe that is why things are worse to date...
Anyway - thanks again folks!
